Arizona Hi Greg... According to Loren Perry's P/E fret, the Revell Arizona is 1/429 scale. I'm just about finished with my kit, all I have to do is finish the fighting tops and rig it. I decided to discard the tripod legs that came in the kit and replace them with brass rod. The plastic that the kit is molded in seems to be a little softer that normal and I couldn't get the kit legs to straighten out. But I agree with you as to the general good quality of the kit. I don't know why the Revell Missouri kit is so bad...I'm considering buying some of the recent reissues of the Revell ships that I remember as a kid (USS Pine Island seaplane tender, USS Mission Capistrano, etc) and I would appreciate hearing from anyone in the group that can give a review of these kits. Some more thoughts on the Arizona...be prepared to do some whittling. The kit has an abundance of molded-in railings that must be removed to use the GMM railings. The soft plastic that I referred to before was helpful in this regard, as it was fairly easy to cut, file and sand the railings away. Also, there are some molded-on cables on each side of the hull that should be removed. I drilled out the portholes in the hull, there are a lot of them, but not near as many as were in the 1/350 Lusitania that I finished before starting the Arizona. I hope that you found the Floquil Paint for your decks...I used Loren Perry's method as described in the Navis article and I am really pleased with the results. I recommend that anyone working on the Arizona obtain a copy of the book "Battleship Arizona" by Paul Stilwell. It's full of photos and descriptions and has several pages of plan drawings. My local library has a copy, so I didn't even have to buy it! Tim Newell ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Greg Subject: Re USS Arizona Hi Tim, I got my P/E kit today so I am all set to start on Her. (USS Arizona) In Removing the moulded railing, did you scribe and bend them off as Lorens instructions said? I See the cables, why should they be removed? An Era Thing? As far as the Floquil Stain situation goes, I still have no solid leads, so If you seem them in your Travels, Please drop me a note and I will send you some bucks. Thanks Greg ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: SantMin@aol.com Subject: Re: Combat Models, 1/72 scale Fleet Boat >> My question is, have any of you seen this kit, assembled or not, and what did you think of it? << I have seen this kit built up and it was OUTSTANDING, however, the builder put in a lot of extra work with details. A friend of mine sent the kit back because he thought it was so bad. I guess it depends on how much work you are willing to put into it. I've gone back in time to a kit that I remember first building when it hit the shelves about 25 years ago. I'm working on the old 1:72 Revell 80' Elco PT kit, which when completed will be finished in the "Adaptor" camouflage scheme. For those who haven't seen it referred to by its official name, that's the zebra-stripe scheme that many assume was only used in the Med. It was also used in the Pacific. I've had to remove all the scribed decking, since photos show the PTs to have been smooth-decked. The kit .50 cal. machine guns will be replaced with white metal .50s, and crew figures will be corrected (the gunners will get legs!) and extra figures will be added. I'm working very slowly, filling seams, etc., with no set time/date for completion. Of course, some of the slowness may have to do with facing having to do that paint scheme.... John Snyder ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: witsie/ken mckelvy Subject: Re: Individual posting I'm rather new to newslists, BBs, etc., so I don't know the ends-and-outs as I should. So long as it doesn't become to much of burden for you, I'd much prefer to see it remain as it is. From what I've seen, thus far, the majority of interest seems to focus on smaller scale models. This isn't mine at all, but I enjoy reading each entry. Despite the disparity in scales, there is a great deal of common ground and you never know when an unexpected jewel of info may turn up. I'm not a devoted sub builder, but they do interest me and I had not heard of this one. Does Combat Models have a web site? I'd like to get a look at it, if possible. While on the subject of subs do you, or does anyone else, have experience with the Amati Type-VII kit? This one has tempted me for some time.
