Arizona Hi Greg... The reason that I removed the cables is that I have a personal aversion to molded-on representations of 3-D details, especially when they can be easily replaced. For instance, I removed the molded-on anchor chains and replaced them with metal ones (an old necklace swiped from my wife) on my kit. Also, I wanted to build my Arizona as it would appear "under way" in late 1941, much like the cover painting of Stilwell's book, and the cables on the sides looked like mooring cables to me. You might try looking for your Floquil paints at a model railroad shop...the stains and paint required are railroad colors and are not in the line of Floquil naval colors that are usually harder to find. In my part of the country (Cleveland, Ohio) railroad-only shops outnumber general hobby shops by over 3 to 1. Let me know if you still can't find them, I can pick them up for you for around $2.50 a bottle. Tim ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Greg Subject: Re: U.S.S. Arizona Hey Tim, Good point on the cables. Although they do run through portholes, I think I am just gonna leave them as is on mine for now - looks like tempting fate for me. Floquil Stains are not available in Australia at all - they where brought In by Testors a few years ago, and that arrangement ceased - so Unfortunately - I'm gonna have to import. I would appreciate your help - And if you can help, we'll do the dollars and details off the list. Thanks Greg P.S. Will you be photographing your Arizona? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Mike Settle Subject: Re: USS Arizona >> I See the cables, why should they be removed? An Era Thing? As far as the Floquil Stain situation goes, I still have no solid leads, so If you seem them in your Travels, Please drop me a note and I will send you some bucks. Thanks Greg << Greg and Tim, Floquil stains can usually be found in any good hobby shop that caters to model railroaders. Mike Mike Settle Our problems are mostly behind us. What we have to do now is fight the solutions. I can give you the address if you want it. I'm not sure whether they'll ship them to Oz or not. I'll check that and get back to you. Hi Guys, I've sent my suggestions to Greg re. this group's outlines..get posting! I know Loren Perry's a pretty busy lad, but I'll ask him next time we chat if he'll drop in occasionally, as there seems to be rather a lot of 1/429 Arizona-speak here at the moment and I'm sure he could have something to say from time to time. BTW, for those of you getting withdrawal symptoms, Plastic Ship Modeler 97/3 is on the way from the printers as I speak. Dan Jones had a new disc crash halfway through the Alan Raven file. Bin there, done that. Oh yeah...nearly forgot.. modelling projects underway. Dave and myself have the following under construction... Skywave 1/700 Sheffield Type 42 with WEM Modern Radars and General Modern RN fittings, an Airfix 1/600 Cossack, massively rebuilt and has been undergoing superdetailing for around 3 years..wouldn't have done this if I'd have known we were going to be doing our own in 1/700!! IJN Kongo from the Fujimi kit, with GMM details, and a model of the STA ship Sir Winston Churchill (Dave and I met on her many moons ago). Add to this a couple of aircraft kits and 24 hr business and you can see why none of these will EVER get finished! However, it's all very therapeutic I guess.... Caroline White Ensign Models http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/town/avenue/xdt22/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: John Snyder Subject: HMS BARHAM 1941 Caroline: As regards the sternwalk and starboard camo scheme, see Raven and Roberts' Ensign 4, Queen Elizabeth Class Battleships, page 40. There is a photo of her underway "shortly before she was sunk." It is a starboard broadside photo, showing both her starboard side camo pattern and the fact that the sternwalk had been removed. Page 43 has a 1940 view of MALAYA leading BARHAM, showing the portside scheme at that time. According to this same source, the UP mount was replaced by "two 0.5 in. machine guns" (p.53). Hope this helps. And for anyone out there who hasn't seen the quality of White Ensign kits--treat yourself, they're jewels!
