I have the Aoshima Minsk, but I'd really like some Kirov, Kresta, Kynda or Krivak class ships to put with it. I would want 1/700 scale or larger. Does anybody know of any or if any are going to be released. They are beautiful ships and it would be a shame if there aren't any kits. Any info appreciated. << Hi Aubrey, The other Soviet ships available in 1/700 are: 1) Plastic Sovremenny & Udaloy Class Destroyer, Krivak I & II Class Frigates, Echo Class Submarine From Skywave. 2) Resin Kynda Class Cruiser From P&I but not available anymore. 3) Plastic Alfa, Sierra, Victor, Delta, Typhoon & Oscar Class Submarine, Pomornik, Aist & Lebed Class Air-cushion landing craft and a few vehicle, Nanuchka, Tarantul & Osa Class Corvettes From DML but hard to find I think, at least not available in my place, Hong Kong, anymore. Does anyone have more suggestion about the Soviet ships in any scale. I love the Soviet Vessel very much? Best Wishes! Gary, Hong Kong. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Mike Settle Subject: USS North Carolina kits >> I'm trying to find a USS North Carolina kit, when I was a child, I went from home to home begging for coins to save the USS North Carolina, I was born and raised in NC and that was my only reason for asking about the change. I helped save Her! Now I am looking for a USS North Carolina kit? Now if I can just find a REAL good kit of the USS North Carolina! at a real good price! Ronnie :-) << Hi, Ronnie, In addition to the Revell re-issue Greg mentioned, Classic Warships does a North Carolina in 1/350th scale. It is a resin kit with photoetch parts and depicts the NC in her 1942 configuration. The kit also contains alternate parts to do a 1942 version of the USS Washington. I've not yet seen the kit, but Pacific Front Hobbies is advertising the kit in "Fine Scale Modeler", and I'm sure White Ensign Models will have the kit, too. Mike Settle ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: SantMin Subject: Re: airbrushing acrylics I use floquil, model master, or humbrol when I airbrush but there are some modelers in our local club that airbrush acrylics exclusively and they get some fantastic results. I will ask them for tips at the next meeting and post the results. Bob Santos ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: BEN8800 Subject: Glencoe Subchaser kit >> I just got the Glencoe Subchaser kit. It's different and should be quick. It would also make an interesting subject to enlarge for RC. Saying the instructions are sparse would be kind. I also have a more than a little filling and sanding to do. Questions: 1) Did the vessel have a clinker hull? The kit just has molded ridges. 2) What are the correct colors. The instructions list colors like "gray", "red", "black", &etc -- pretty useless! Most info I can find is for W.W.II and later. 3) Any good references? I have nothing suitable, nor can I find anything in several used bookshops. << There is a book called Trumpy by Robert Picardat and Robert Tolf, Tiller Publishing Box 447 St. Michaels, MD 21663 Ph. 410-745-3750. Its the story of Trumpys boat building, lastly in Annapolis, MD. There is one chapter on the sub chasers because many were built in his yard in Annapolis. One photo of 3 hulls and they just have regular planking. However, text says yellow pine or Douglas fir planking over 109 frames covered with 1/4" white oak "sheeting" on the entire hull. How the sheeting was applied I don't know. The photo is probably showing the planking. Those lines on the model are probably representative of the sheeting. On my model, I sanded off those lines because I doubt if they would look like that on the craft. I also cut off all the railings and used brass stanchions and thread for the rails. The kit rails were too out of scale for me. The chapter in the Trumpy book does not mention colors. The book does give a description of the guns used on the boats. Ben Lankford ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Gary Au" Subject: Re: Plastic Ship Modeler Quarterly Does anyone have contact with Plastic Ship Modeler, a quarterly publication by Daniel H. Jones? My latest copy is 1997/2. How much is the current subscription rate for Asia. I wish to subscript the 1997/3 & 1997/4 back issue and whole year of 1998. What is the mailing address of PSM and the method of payments? Thanks! Gary, Hong Kong. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Rob Mackie" Subject: Re: USS MISSOURI/USS NORTH CAROLINA >> Now I am looking for a USS North Carolina kit? Now if I can just find a REAL good kit of the USS North Carolina! at a real good price! << Classic Warships will be releasing a 1/350 USS North Carolina in about 2 weeks. This will be a resin, white metal and etched brass kit. Price for the waterline version will be $250 and the kit will be available from Pacific Front Hobbies. Rob Mackie ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Bradford Chaucer Subject: Re: American Civil War ship models >> For those interested in warships of the American Civil (and Revolutionary) war, I see several resin kits by Cottage Industry Models are available from a mail-order hobby shop. Listed (verbatim) are: CIMH-------1/32 Confederate "H.L. Hunley" submarine, $48.95. (US) CIMHINT---1/32 Confederate "H.L. Hunley" submarine with full interior. Upper hull lifts off to display interior, $59.95. CIMD--------Confederate Civil War steam powered ram "David", $89.60. CIMT---------1/6th scale American Revolutionary War submarine "Turtle", the world's first combat submarine. We were allocated 2 of only 50 kits total produced worldwide. This kit was actually scaled to let you put a "G.I. Joe" figure inside. (figure not included) (End of verbatim listing) These kits are listed in the new flyer I received from Meteor Productions, who may be contacted at: http://www.meteorprod.com I haven't seen any of these, so can't speak to the quality of the kits. I CAN << I have seen them They are fantastic. One caveat however, The Solid hull Hunley was designed before the recent efforts to locate and salvage the wreck. As a result of more recent photos taken during the dives Wm Blackmore, (Owner of Cottage Industries Models) has made several changes to accurize the model. I don't know whether he has updated the solid hull version. The overall quality of the castings is excellent. Few blowholes and any that are there are minor. Good surface detail. CIM will stand behind every kit and replace defective or damaged parts (regardless of who damaged them :-) ) I have seen a built up David at the 1996 IPMS. It is to put it mildly a knockout. He even provides molded in slag and scale coal for the boiler. Kit instructions are generally a small book, detailed step by step. All in All, Cottage Industried kits will build up into impressive models. Regards, Bradford Chaucer ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Greg Subject: Tamiya Groupie! I just read Bob Santos' post about the Acrylics and just realised I am a Tamiya Groupie. Each time I go to the Model Shop I go Straight to Tamiya's Paints, I never look at Humbrol, Revell, Testors, Model Master etc.... I am not sure why, I have just always used tamiya, my results have always been pleasing, so I guess I have never had the need to look around. Am I missing something? Will my results be that noticeably different if I try Model Master? I'd love to hear what YOU have to say!
