I know there are a few kit manufacturer subscribe to the group and may be the result may give them a little bit idea on their future plans. I am interested in post W.W.II subject only. I think the ballot should classify by period and nation. Happy Modeling. Is there any alternative to photoetch, and, if not, who makes the best 1/700 20mm guns in photoetch? The 20mm guns in the Tamiya Gneisenau seem to be the closest to scale (though they don't have shields) I've ever seen. For 40mm guns in 1/700, are the latest versions from Skywave the best out there still or is there an alternative? Thanks! Art Nicholson ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: McKellar Subject: Glencoe NS Savannah I'll chip in an update on my Glencoe NS Savannah. After reviewing my (scarce) reference sources I have aimed the project at being a "reasonable" model of the ship. I'm just not up to scratch building all the decks and superstructure. As it is I had to cut down the "funnel" part by about 25%, fill and recut the bridge windows (ain't PE grand). In addition, I discovered the ship had flipper-like stabalizers. I've added those. For the cargo handeling cranes etc I think I'm going to scratch build them out of brass tubing etc... I still have questions aobut rudder and screw configuration if anyone has any suggestions..... Take care Mark ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: John Philip Downing Subject: 1/700 Pocket Battleships I notice that there are three models of the German Pocket Battleships (Deutschland/Lutlow, Graf Spee, Admiral Scheer) in about 1/700 Scale. Fujimi in 1/700 Matchbox in 1/700 Italieri in 1/720 If I want to build all three ships, which kits should I get? Is one kit much better or is it best to mix and match? Do the three companies each make all three ships? Or is it best to get a Tamiya Scharnhorst and steal turrets, etc from that? Any information would be appreciated, I'm sure someone else has had the same questions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: TANewell Subject: USS Missouri You're exactly right, spent all of last evening putting watertight doors on my Missouri, following the drawings in the back of Stillwell's "Battleship Missouri" book. Don't have a count of how many I used (the model's at home, I'm at work) but I went thru all of the doors on the GMM Missouri fret, plus one and a half of the GMM "watertight doors" frets. So here's a tip for you Missouri builders...make sure that you order 2 "watertight doors" sets and at least one "extra ladders" set from Gold Medal, in addition to the Missouri "shipset"...at least the additional sets are cheap, at $5 each. I'm using Floquil paints on the MO...their "haze grey" looks awfully "blue" to me. I'm usually not a real stickler for exact paint matches - I'm mostly concerned with contrasts and having things "look right", but I don't remember hearing anything about "blue" when reading descriptions of Haze Grey...is this color right for this time period (end of WW2)? Also, still haven't heard any tips on detailing the 50mm AA guns...I would like to add sights, elevation wheels, etc to them.
