(Better buy some more J.I.C:-) Anyways, I'm at Austral, so Windsor is about an Hour away, and Mrs has relatives at Richmond, so next time one of those horrible traditional Aussie "Get Together with the In-Laws" do's is on, I will ditch'um and stop by for some ship-talk:-) >> I'm afraid I mightnt have much to show you if you came over, since I have a classic internet business - I only get stock in to fill orders. My catalogues for my various businesses are all on the internet. So a laptop is all I need to operate the business << That could be a good thing for me though ($$$$), I tend to splurge! >> And yes, Greg, we can get you one of them there HMAS Anzacs in 1/72 scale << Oh Boy! I NEED one of these, (Not want, but, NEEEEEEED!!!!) BTW - I was at Garden Island for a snoop again today, HMAS Brisbane was in, But wouldn't you know it, NO CAMERA:-( >> And anyone else anywhere in the world too for that matter. Look into our AFP Models site at http://www.zip.com.au/~mkear/AFP_Catalogue_Master.htm We are selling things made by members of Task Force 72, duplicating the fittings and hulls etc they made for their own models. SO they can share them with others, and recoup some of their modelling expenses while they're about it. (We accept Visa, Mastercard, Australian Bankcard, Amex) Hundreds of products so far, and more to come. (Shameless plug I know, but its helping other modellers get their models made!) << I love Plugs - Everybody benefits from it, the Buyer gets something good, the seller makes a buck, everybody's happy! And THAT'S What its all about! Enjoy! Greg (Listmaster - SMML) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: SantMin Subject: Re: USS HOLLAND COLORS A few years ago when I was making a model of USS PLUNGER for the NAUTILUS Library and Museum at New London, I did a lot of research into the colors of early US subs. (by the way, the library is a goldmine of submarine info). All early black and white photos show that there is a different color above and below the waterline but it is tough to tell exactly what colors. Finally the museum did turn up a contempoary hand colored post card showing two of the subs out of the water and they show black above the waterline and red below. This was colored by someone who actually could see the boats. That was how I did PLUNGER. Holland may be the same but I will tell you that there is a model in the US Navy Museum in Washington that shows her as a light gray above the waterline and red below, and I think there's one in the Smithsomian that has her light gray above and black below. I don't know the basis for these colors but in the photos I have she looks way too dark to be light gray. Some of these subs had draft markings down the sides at the "conning tower/hatch" but I have never seen a picture of Holland with these. However, I do have a photo of her with HOLLAND in white on either side of her bow. This is another reason I don't think she was light gray. If she was the name would have been painted on in black. Hope this helps. Many thanks Gordon W P.S. A few months ago I bought and built the 1/35 scale Type VIIc U-Boat kit by Accurate Armour. Anyone who might have given thought to buying this very expensive kit and would like to know what its like, I'd be happy to advise, send scans of photos etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Bradford Chaucer Subject: Re: Wish List >> I like Mr. Chaucer's list. I would vote for 1/700 model of all the ships in the "Great White Fleet". Only ones I know of in small scales are Classic Warships USS OREGON (convertable to MASSACHUSETTS and INDIANA) and Jim Shirley's USS CHESTER. Guess I'll have to keep scratchbuilding! << I appreciate your support, but beg to differ over scale. The ships of the GWF were smaller than the WWII behemoths, we need to go to att least 1/350 or even larger. Afterall the 1/350 Gulfstream USS Bainbridge is only about 6-8 in long!! There are a number of books on PTs that include detail plans of the various types and their variations. Probably the most readily available is Squadron/Signal's _PT Boats in Action_, but there are others as well. Hi there, A number of people have suggested that we begin producing 1/700 Scale liner and merchant kits in addition to our warship range. This is very much new territory for us and the production of a liner kit would cost us in the region of £4 to 5 thousand pounds (around $6,300.00). You will therefore understand that we would like to ensure that such a kit would sell, especially bearing in mind that liners are large vessels and therefore will translate into expensive kits, so here's the deal. Our break-even point is about 50 kits, so if 50 of you are willing to pledge to buy the resultant kit, either by furnishing us with a credit card number or other form of payment in advance (none of which would be cashed until the kit was delivered), we will produce our first liner. The subject we have chosen (below) is the grand old Cunarder Aquitania, in her time the most luxurious liner afloat. http://whiteensignmodels.simplenet.com/aquitan.jpg Launched in 1913, the Aquitania was designed to work in conjunction with Cunard's two express liners, Mauretania and Lusitania. Of generally similar appearance, she was a little slower than the two sisters at 23.5 knots, but considerably larger at 901 feet 6 inches overall and 46,500 tons gross. "The Aristocrat of the Atlantic" entered service in May 1914 and served with distinction for over 35 years, including spells as a troop ship during both world wars. In 1950 she was broken up at Faslane, not far from the John Brown yard where she had been built, having entered her career as the world's last transatlantic 4-funnelled liner. The model will be an impressive 15.5 inches long, with our usual huge array of photoetched brass details. Unfortunately, this size leads to an equally impressive price tag of £120.00, approximately $192.00, plus, of course, the much-loved V.A.T. for E.U. residents. With this in mind, are you prepared to pledge your money to see this kit happen? Remember that unless 50 of you are willing to say -YES- it will stay on the drawing board. If you are willing to vote with your hard-earned cash, please contact us with your credit card details or send a cheque with a covering letter to us at WEM. Remember, no card will be charged or cheque cashed until the kits are sent out. My question is about the 25 man whale boats - were the interiors of the whale boats painted WDB - to match the deck color when viewed from above, or where the entire boats (exterior above waterline and the interior of the boat) painted N-5.
