Althought this kit is a good starting point, there are a lot of errors in it, some of them very big errors. The biggest problem is that it has a deck that did not exist! If you can find a copy of FSM July 92, or Scale Ship Modeler v.13 n.7, or Scale Model Detailing (from Kalmback '95), they all have articles of mine detailing how to change this OREGON to a MASSACHUSETTS c.1910. You won't need all that info to build it as OREGON but you will see how to eliminate the incorrect deck along with many other corrections that apply to all three sister ships in the class Bob Santos. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Pacific Front Hobbies Subject: Naval Books Hi Jeff, Be sure to keep us informed as to the availability of your books. I talked with Alan and he told me a little about them; I'm sure we will want to order them. Thanks, Bill Gruner http://www.pacificfront.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: BChaucer@ix.netcom.com Subject: Re: Glencoe OREGON >> I too saw some of those marvelous buildups of the Oregon. I bought one and started it.......boom, right into the purgatory of unfinished models that I will get around to when I am really feeling masochistic. There wasn't anything I touched on that thing that didn't need MASSIVE amounts of reworking, it was just too much! It may be the only game in town but I'm not sure it's worth it!!!! << I have the kit too. It's my understanding that there are major errors in the way the deck structures are pesented in the aea around the crew sleeping quarters amidship. Major surgery is required. A PE set is also badly needed for this kit; perhaps GMM is listening :-) Regards, Bradford Chaucer ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Les Dorr Jr." Subject: Tips on making 1:700 ships more realistic? Coming along OK with my first ship, the Academy/Minicraft 1:700 Spruance-class DD. Can anyone offer some tips on making these small-scale ships look more like the real thing? I have a PE set on order. I suppose some sort of wash or highlighting might do the trick. Any good suggestions?? My reply was: The biggest problem I had with this model was installing the superstructure. First, the wooden frames that are glued on top of the resin hull did not seem to be to scale. I had to do a lot of reshaping so the photoetched brass superstructure would fit correctly. The connection between the superstructure sides and hull required a lot of auto body putty to smooth out the joint. The sides of the superstructure to the deck - I used super glue, epoxy, etc. I broke the joint a thousand times until I finished it. My suggestion is to tack solder the joint about every two inches and glue in between, or solder the entire joint. Check all the holes in the superstructure. Some of mine did not etch thru. On the sides of the conning tower and on the deck, the small holes have either resin underneath and on the superstructure those wood frames are in way of holes. When you paint the holes get blocked. If you can chisel out the under structure in way of holes so it looks like the holes go thru. Paint all the framing under the photo etch flat black before you install it so this stuff does not show up. I painted my model black below the waterline and gray above. After a lot of research and info from the list, thats the correct color, not the red bottom shown on the kit box.
