Specifically, I've gotten STRASBOURG and DUNKERQUE from him. Bill's a gentlemen, and I can recommend him without hesitation. He's my first choice because he specializes in warship kits. http://www.apchobbies.com, is another hobby store with an impressive array of kits, both in- and out- of production. Check them out - on many items, their pricing is fairly good. There are other good sites, and I'll get them if you'd like. These two sites post phone numbers to contact directly, which I recommend. I think you'll find these kits at one of these locations, but let me know if you're still looking after you've contacted them. Cheers, and good hunting. Joe Reyna ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Sue & Ben Subject: Titanic's Port and Starboard Hi Greg, >> Just one other point, wasn't there an order given to "Full Reverse" as well? If an order was given to starboard, and engines were reversed, wouldn't that actually produce opposite results to what may occur if the engines were driving forward? << Nah. :-) Seriously, my hydrodynamics is a bit rusty but here what I believe happens. First I'll reiterate what Michael wrote. In the old days when they used a tiller you'd bring it to starboard which would turn the rudder to port and thus the ship also would turn to port. Hence the order 'hard over to starboard' to go port. Now about your reversed engines question and assuming the ship instantly started moving backwards, the turn would still be made to port since port/starboard are ship relative and independent of the observer or the direction of travel (unlike left and right). The rub is the ship wouldn't start moving backwards for a long time due to it's inertia. So what happens is you have a large mass of water (the ocean!) moving past the hull/rudder one way and a pocket of water around the rudder trying to move the other way. The net effect is to have turbulent water (and quite likely cavitations) flow just where you shouldn't and thus a near total loss of rudder effectiveness. Some have actually hypothesized that Mr Murdoc gave the wrong engine room order for that very reason. Had the ship maintained full speed ahead the rudder would've been far more effective, bringing the bow around much faster. Murdoc's subsequent order to reverse the rudder in the hope of whipping the stern away from the berg would then probably have saved the day. But who can say for sure.... I think they are mocking me! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Gene Larson Subject: Color Chips One more comment on the color chips. Whatever a model builder does afterward is up to him. However, as far as I am concerned, first I would like to know what these elusive colors were really meant to look like - up close and personal. Ocean blue, haze grey, or whatever they were called has no meaning relative to the actual color. What about the purples mentioned? The color chips give the correct beginning. Perhaps there is not a great market for these chips, but perhaps those doing the work will realize that there effort will be appreciated by the few looking for more knowledge, and will forgo the desire for big profits. That's called modeler helping modeler. Enjoyed your site. I am looking for a model of the tugboat St James, which worked in the New Yor area in the mid to late 1800's. Do you know where i should Look? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
