Heller Prince Eugen 1/400 2. Bishop" Subject: Titanic Stripe Bill, I have the Academy Titanic Kit, and haven't gotten very far yet - I'm still waiting to get my copy of "Titanic: An Illustrated History". I was going to mix the paint for the funnels as per the instructions - but I guess you are saying this won't work very well? I found this little tidbit on the net yesterday: "The closest color I have found premixed for the funnels is Testors Model Master color: Afrika Mustard (FS30266). It is very very close to the "buff" color used by White Star on the funnels.". As for the gold stripe, I was planning on using a shade that would match the "Titanic" decals in the kit. To paint it I am planning to use "striping" tape to tape where the stripe should be, then mask along both sides, remove the striping tape and spray paint the middle. John ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: MRBESmith@aol.com Subject: Titanic Stripe Hi all, For the stripe on the Minicraft Titanic, I decided not to paint it, but I bought Woodland Scenics Dry Transfer Gold Stripes. This worked very well. There is some challange in lining everything up straight, especially with the rivets and hull plates providing an uneven surface. But if you're patient, it turns out quite nice. Brian Smith ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Jeff Herne" Subject: Ship decals >> Why do many models come out with only one set of decals... << Gold Medal Models has a complete set of warship decals in the major scales, they cover everything from 1/350 hull numbers to 1/700 aircraft wing markings, including the frustrating (ever hand-paint?)1/700 carrier flight deck lines. Another option is to look at the Verlinden Dry Stencils the tread-heads use. There are also several companies that make dry transfers for model railroaders, and they have military style lettering in countless point sizes, colors, and fonts. They're all fairly inexpensive...Besides, from an intermediate (read:photoetching and airbrushing) modelers point of view, most of these kit decals stink anyway, the carrier film being either too thick or the image being off-register, especially in older or real small scale kits...take the time to get used to dry-transfers, the results are great, no silvering a year or two down the road. Looks to be complete except for one set of 40mm, but it may be loose in the bag. Asking $5 plus shipping. I'm familiar with the HO boats and ships available from Bluejacket but seem to recall that there were trawlers available from another, perhaps model railroad oriented source. Any help would be appreciated. TIA << Mark, In addition to Bluejaclet, JD Innovations P.O.Box 110448, Aurora, CO 80042 has several HO scale boat models. Walthers will be coming out with a nice injection modeled kit of a 1930's style tugboat this summer. There is another New England outfit that produces HO kits of many waterfront buildings and I know that they have several boats including a TRAWLER. Problem is, although I've seen the kits, I cannot remember the name of the company. I'll keep working on it !!!!!! Also, while in the Barne's and Noble on Oahu a few years ago, I noticed a magazine called something like "Maritime Modeler's" or "Maritime Model Collectors", something like that. I always went back and browsed the current issue every time I visited. Now is Texas, the local Barne's and Noble doesn't carry it and don't even seem to know anything about it when asked. Does anyone out there know what magazine I'm talking about? The production quality was very nice and it seems to have been published quarterly or bi-monthly I'm lead to believe? I just went down the the hobby shop and picked-up Microscale's 1/64" inch parallel stripes decal set in gold. They're so thin and opaque that I've been accused of painting them on there and being "waaay too anal" about worrying about such a small detail. There are other widths and with a little number crunching I'm sure you could find the appropriate width for a 1/350 application. Good luck.
