Class Sub Kit 7: Tom's Modelworks 8: Re: PT Boat detailing ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: Sanartjam@aol.com Subject: Re: Nichimo 1/200 Submarines Hi, Nichimo also makes (or made) a Type IX-C U-boat in 1/200 (U-107 was a Type IX-B), as well as a Japanese submarine in the same scale (I can't remember which one). I don't know of any other submarines made by Nichimo, but it's done a number of other Japanese ships in that scale, including the Yamato, the Akizuki (and a later-version sister), the Kagero (and a later-version sister), and a number of JMSDF warships (such as the Minegumo). I'm not aware of any dedicated photoetched sets for the two Nichimo U-boats, but GMM makes some rails in 1/200. There was once a detailed article in Model Ship Builder on building the Type IX-B or IX-C; if you want, I could dig it out. I don't have much in the way of sources on U-boats, but there was a Warship Profile on the U-107. Hope this helps, Art Nicholson ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: MJBCMB@aol.com Subject: German WWII SUbs Henry asks about the Nichimo kits. We first built the class IXc U-511, opting not to add the electric motor. A very detailed model itis. The U-107 is a class IXb and comes with numbering, conning tower insignia and flags depicting ships and tonnage sunk on the mission for the U-106, U-107 and U-108, so you could theoretically build a wolf pack of the type IX boat. The 107 kit is very similar to the 511, and both come with the captain, number one and three crew for painting and placement. I particularly like Revells 1-125 scale U-Boats as well. Hi Mike, It was great to talk with you today, I am on the way to check out TASK FORCE 72 Page now to get details for the Gathering this Sunday, I re-arranged my schedule and I will definately be there!!! (DON'T FORGET MY CIWS :-) You mentioned Russ French's Perry class HMAS Darwin? I know our Adelaide Class came from Todd, Just like the Perry's, And they do look very similar, but I thought there would be MAJOR outfitting differences between them? How similar are they? >> If'n you want to do a HMAS version, there's plenty of detail you can add, including a little conversion kit to make the Seahawk into a RAN version, plus the Flight deck control, bollards etc. Whatever you feel is too much trouble to make yourself << I got some Hasegawa SH-60J's in 1/72 for my project, I couldn't find the B Model, how different are the J and the B models? And what is Different on the HMAS Model? (I am such a newbie to Huey's:-) >> Also the good news is that there is going to be a FFG hull in a couple of months, so you could make a whole model and operate it with us if you wanted. << I really want to get into TASK FORCE 72. I want to build me an ANZAC, but with all the Bucks I have spent so far, and will be spending over the weekend, I think My Fantail Diorama is gonna turn into a full R/C 1/72 Perry Class Frigate (Most Likely the USS FORD FFG54) So that will probly be my draw card, until then, I will probly just hang with you guys and pretend:-) Please keep me posted on the development of the Hull, does it look like coming out as a semi-kit aswell? See You Sunday:-) Greg (Listmaster -SMML) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Graham Holmes Subject: Re: HMNZS Achilles I am looking for information on the armament and fittings of the Achilles during 1945. I believe that X turret had been removed and some pom-poms in its place. How many were there? Did she have all 4 twin 4" in place? What other light AA was there, and what was in place of the catapult? Are there any photos of her in any publications out there? Finally will the WEM pom-poms in 1/700 suit in X turrets place. TIA Graham ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Ives100@aol.com Subject: Re: U-boats The series nine designation almost certainly means the Type IX U-boat. The Nichimo kits are of Type IXB and IXC, which were variants. These were designed for longer range trans Atlantic patrols. The most widely used U-boat was the smaller Type VII. I don't believe Nichimo makes a Type VII in 1:200. There is a Revell Type VII, in, I believe 1:125 scale. There are also some resin kits available of Type VII, Type IX and Type XXI (The Electroboot). Fortunately, the Type XXI did not really become operational until 1945, or it might have changed the Battle of the Atlantic with it's advanced features and high submerged speed. Email me if you need more details. Class sub on the market? Greg (Listmaster - SMML) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Rob Mackie" Subject: Tom's Modelworks Ship Modelers may be interested in Tom Harrison's (Tom's Modelworks) current projects. Take a look at his 1/350 Essex class carrier, Bogue class escort carrier, and BB Arizona (1921 fit) currently under development. You can see them in the new Warship at: http://warship.simplenet.com/news.htm Rob Mackie El Cerrito, California ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: PT Boat detailing Henry: I'm also doing the old Revell kit, and can give you the name of a manufacturer of 1/72 .50 caliber machine guns. They are very nice white metal castings, and come as singles so you'll have to scratchbuild the mount. I can also supply you with a xerox of an article that shows how to do that as well. Finally, the 37mm that was commonly used on the boats was not the Army AT gun, but rather the USAAF weapon intended for use in Bell P-39/P-400 Airacobras. It's true that the one Kennedy had mounted on the bow of the 109 boat was the Army weapon, but that seems to have been a very uncommon exception. It'll take me a couple of days to get back to you with the info on the .50s. I can post that to SMML, but if you want the plans for the mount, e-mail me directly with your snail-mail address.
