Subject: SMML22/02/98VOL098 shipmodels@wr.com.au --------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ***NOTE*** Since SMML has been advertised on quiet a few different web pages, subscriptions have increased considerably, so to have the number of returns and errors I receive when distributing the list each day. So, In an effort to stop people sending me hate mail because they didn't receive SMML on any given occasion, I have added a section at the end of the volume stating who didn't get SMML the previous night, and why. This is only a trial at the moment, so If you get tired of seeing it, let me know! Please also let me know If you have suggestions on SMML's format, or if there is anything else you would like to see, or perhaps don't wan't to see anymore? Thanks Greg (Listmaster - SMML) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- INDEX 1: Painting Technique's and Dribble 2: 100th Celebration 3: Re: 100th Celebration 4: Fwd: Yamato parts FS ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: Greg Lee (Listmaster - SMML) Subject: Painting Technique's and Dribble After a long hiatus from my modelling room, I decided to get back in there, clear away the cobwebs, and see what I left on the bench before I went O'seas. (I have put my OHP Fantail Diorama on hold for the moment, Does anybody have a spare set of U.S.Navy low-viz decals for 1 /72 SH-60B?) I found my Revell USS Arizona, With a nice coat of Mud on the decks, and I figured about three months is plenty of time for that to dry so I got out those stains Tim Newell sent me last year (Howdy Tim, Long Time.....:-) to see what I could do, and I came to the opinion that Loren Perry is truly a magician, my decks looked horrible. EASY-OFF to the rescue, and I found that easy off removed the stain but not the Mud? And left me with a nice "worn" looking surface, I couldn't believe my eye's, so I got an old brush, cut the bristles down to within 1-2 millimetres of the bindings, and did a little DRY Dry brushing with the walnut only, and found the results to be quiet spectacular. Also a heck off a lot quicker than picking out single planks at random, and then trying to paint it without staining the planks on either side of it - The dry brushing highlights the grooves between planks nicely and kinda passes over the planks streaking each of them differently, rather than picking out one plank and making it dark, picking another and making it lighter, the result is a much more blended, defined looking deck - a technique stumbled upon truly by accident, and overwhelmingly pleasing! I then looked up the pictures of Loren's Arizona on NAVISMAGAZINE.com and noticed he had filled in the little circles in the deck with black, - are they meant to be knot's in the wood? Then came time to apply the grey to the barbette's & bollards etc..., and I also learned I truly suck at this kind of painting, anybody have any idea's on how to make clean sharp edges on such a crowded deck? I really need some help on that cos I have Tamiya's P of W coming up soon, have you seen how much is moulded to the decks on that bad boy? (How's Ryans P of W Coming along Tim?) Greg (Listmaster - SMML) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Henry Subject: 100th Celebration I think that just planning to be around for another 100 volumes is enough to be thankful for and cause to celebrate. You've done a great job of putting the website together and that in itself is a reason to be thankful. For me I look forward each morning to see what folks have been saying when I pop the site open and suck up a glass of cranberry juice!! Getting old you know!! Just keep it rolling and get us through the next 100!! Cheers Henry ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Greg Lee (Listmaster - SMML) Subject: Re: 100th Celebration Hi Henry, Thanks for the words!
