I realized my Japanese fleet heavily outweighed all the others. I'm looking for across the board trades for 1/700 ships or we can do a numbers game....Jeff Herne Tamiya King George V Tamiya IJN Agano Fujimi Ark Royal (postwar) Fujimi Shokaku Fujimi Oyodo Aoshima Katsuragi Aoshima Kashima Aoshima Chuyo Hasegawa Furutaka Hasegawa Haguro Seeking: Tamiya Prince of Wales (for post war Anson conversion) Tamiya Nelson/Rodney **Pit Road** Cannon Buckley Butler New Orleans San Francisco Baltimore Colorado Maryland Mississippi Idaho St. Louis West Virginia ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Jeff Herne" Subject: 20-B Deck Blue Greetings All, Having done extensive research on USN and RN colors, I can assure you that most of the naval colors currently on the market are suspect, some are downright awful. I'm not a paint fanatic, but coming close to a color isn't too much to ask from a manufacturer...anyway... A while back Jon Warneke and I made public a list of FREE commercial paint color chips that match the Munsell codes for USN and RN paints. While these paint chips are for house paints, the chips themselves match the colors, giving you a good starting point for mixing and matching non-marine colors for use on ships. (Please do not send us e-mail asking how to use house paint on your models) This list can be sent via E-mail, and should be available on the Warship site real soon in the Colors and Camouflage Section. Hope this helps. Paolo is absolutely right, if you want to make this (j.c.s) kit accurate you will have some work to do! I would definitely recommend the Skywave US Navy Aircraft set (2 if you want to have a busy deck) as the ones in the kit(which I have) are worse than useless. As usual, wings are not folded so it's a cut 'n paste job, but at least the Skywave aircraft are worth the effort. They come with basic stencilling and hi-viz markings for CVN 68/69 and some CVN 65 circa 1978 (not much use to you unfortunately) GMM and Flagship do detail sets for these kits, I've only used GMM's (a bit chunky) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Marc Biagini Subject: Lexington James suggests looking at the "SALEM" webpage for a link, but where is the SALEM webpage? I put went to SALEM and it was a pets and toystore webpage. Pacific Front Hobbies http://www.pacificfront.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Leif Snellman Subject: Re: Bismarck reference J Morley wrote: >> "The Discovery of the Bismark" by Dr Ballard (the man who found the wreck a few years ago) this is full of the same sort of "before and after" pictures and drawings of specific detail that he did with the wreck of the Titanic (which he also found). This also tells the story of the sinking and Dr Ballards' various attempts to find the Bismark at the bottom of the Atlantic. << Ballard's book is full of good pictures. However, don't trust the colors on the profile and overhead painting. Sadly, from a modellers point of view, Ballard/Arcbold do not hesitate to "cheat" with the pictures. That the picture on page 125 is of Tirpitz is not too disturbing but worse is the picture of Rodney on page 92. The text (HMS Rodney battles heavy seas as she races to intercept the Bismarck) not only identifies the ship but also the time the picture was taken. In fact the ship on the picture is Nelson but the picture has been deliberately cut so that the nameplate in the stern can't be seen! I consider such tricks really dirty! Footnote: Nelson had U.P. batteries on B & C turrets, Rodney only on B turret. Ref: Schlachtschiffe und Schlachtkreuzer 1905-1970, Siegfried Breyer. I was hoping someone out there working on the Titanic Model could help me with the color they used to paint the >funnels. I have a paint (Afrika Mustard) that's close but I can't seem to commit myself to it yet before seeing what others have done. I could mix the colors but was hoping to take the easy way out first. << Hi Bill, On my Academy minicraft model of the titanic, I used Humbrol no. 69 yellow on the funnels, I put a light coat on, & it came out very good, (as I think the funnels were white plastic) otherwise you can mix an extremely little bit of red & white into it, but it depends how you want it to look. Humbrol 69 is a gloss, but because I did it thinly it turned out to be a semi gloss.. hope this helps. I can't recall who it was. I was at my local hobby shop this afternoon and saw an LST model by Naval Base. It was $13.95. If whoever was looking for this kit reads this, or someone knows the guy's address, let me know. I could pick it up for him this weekend or on Monday and ship it to him. Roger Clemens ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: witsie/ken mckelvy Subject: Prinz Eugen Drawings There was a question about drawings for a large Prinz Eugen earlier in the week, dug out what I could find and hope it's of some help. First, Taubman's Plan Service: TBSW-920, Prinz Eugen 1940, scale 1:200, 3 sheets for $25.00. Taubman is supposed, eventually, to have its entire catalog on line at The Modelers Boatyard, but it's not up yet. Perhaps you could email, though. http://www.modelersboatyard.com/index.html In this scale, there is a kit by the German firm Aeronaut. I'm not sure as to their quality, I understand their hulls to be of ABS and the one brochure/flyer I've seen looked a bit simplistic. These are available from Midway Models, who also offer German armaments, boats, etc., in this scale. Midway Models 157 St. Leonards Road Leicester, LE2 3BZ United Kingdom In 1:200 the Eugen will work out a little over 40-inches. If you'd prefer larger, contact the The Scale Shipyard. They offer a fiberglass hull and drawings in 1:100. Scale Shipyard is on the web at: http://members.aol.com/seapics/SSY/SSYMain.htm Fleetscale offer a 1:128 hull and drawings (65-in). They also offer number of fittings, but this can get expensive pretty quickly. Fleetscale can be had from either of the following. Westward Moldings Ltd. Cleanline Hulls Greenhill, Delaware Road 1736 49th Ave. Gunnislake, Cornwall, PL19 9AS Calgary, Alberta, United Kingdom Canada, T2T 2T9 Finally, listed on the inside cover of "Vom Original zum Modell: Schwere Kreuzer Admiral Hipper, Blucher und Prinz Eugen" is "Planrolle: Schwere Kreuzer Admiral Hipper-Klasse." My German is virtually nil, but this appears to offer details of various decks, platforms, etc. It looks as if it is to 1:300 scale, and no price was listed. If you contact the publishers, there's almost certainly someone there that can respond in English. Bernard & Graefe Verlag Heilsbachstrasse 26 D-5300 Bonn 1 Germany Hope something here is of help.
