Is there a primer suitable for P/E? Like an etch prime thats fine enough not to clog, and not lumpy? And secondly, I will be building another Mo soon, using Tamiya's New Jersey, and I need to remove the moulded in wood decking patterns from the aft section as Missouri didn't have any wood aft of the superstructure after her 86 Refit (apart from a small area at her extreme stern between the old 40mm Bofor Gun tubs) Does any body have any ideas on how I can remove the wood decking from between the hatches and the #3 barbette? Its a tight fit! Greg (Listmaster - SMML) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Morley, James (Frankfurt)" Subject: USS America The only kit I know of is Italieri's 1/720 offering. The molds are getting a little old (and the accuracy was dubious to begin with). As with all of the Italieri aircraft carrier series, the aircraft are awful. But it's cheap, and if you're not too fussy, you might be able to do something with it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Joseph W. Divar" <110055.3477@compuserve.com> Subject: Help!!: Revell CV-59 FORRESTAL instructions wanted!! Fellow modelers. A neighbor gave me the Revell USS FORRESTAL CV-59 kit a few years back, or the Forrest Fire as well call her . Problem being, it didn't have any instructions. For the most part this simple kit is easy to figure out. Still, if anyone has any instructions hanging around I would gladly owe you a favor if you could find the time to send me a copy. After two years in storage, I'm planning on scoring some brownie points at work by contributing to the static display case. Regards, Joe & Mary Divar ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Reidar Berg" Subject: Heller "HMS Hood" in scale 1:400 Heller produced a 1:400 kit of the British BC "HMS Hood" many years ago (Kit No. 1051). Have someone out there seen this kit? I am interested to know all about the quality, accuracy etc. Is it comperable to WEM's 1:350 HMS Hood cast in resin? (I guess it will be a lot cheaper even if it is rare and hard to get hold on). I have not been able to find it listed in any on-line references I have. << Italeri makes a 1:720 kit. It represents America in late 80s - early 90s configuration. Air group includes F-14, F/A-18, A-6. The kit is about 95% right on compared with photos in the USS America Detail & Scale. Use the GMM Enterprise/Nimitz photoetched sheet to dress it up. I think the content of the issue is done. I suppose it's nice to be able to shake the box and have the model fall together, but it's unrealistic in most cases. It hasn't happened to me yet. >> As I am only stick to the scale 1/700. I am waiting for a true 1/700 scale Aircraft Carrier which may be produced in the future. << Don't hold your breath. It's likely to be a while. The Italeri Nimitz is a fairly old mold, and nobody has come out with a real comepetitor yet. (the Monogram 1/819 kit does NOT count as a real competitor....) >> However, will you put a 1/720 Carrier with a 1/700 destroyer or frigate? << I would. (in fact, I have!) >> If a 1/700 resin kits is available, will you buy it with a price which may be 10 to 20 times more than the Revell or Italieri kits? << Not me. I'm a cheapskate. ;-) >> Or you prefer to forget the 3% difference in the scale? << Some kits have more than 3% error from their claimed scale. IMHO, 3% is not worth worrying about. (unless I'm scratchbuilding....) David R. Wells ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Henry Subject: USS America CV-66 Gene You asked about whether there is a kit available for USS America CV-66!! IIRC Italeari has a 1/720 scale kit available for this particular Carrier. Just saw it setting on the self at my local exchange. Will stop by later and get the kit no. HTH v/r HBlecha ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: jpoutre@lehman.com (Joseph Poutre) Subject: Looking for a troop transport model Does anyone out there know of a model of the General John Pope class, AP-110 to AP-119? Maritime Commission P2-S2-R2 type. I want to build one for my father, who sailed on the General G.M. Randall to Korea. If a model doesn't exist, I'll buy plans and scratchbuild, but I'd rather start with a model, even a bad one. Thanks in advance, Joe Poutre ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: PERATHJEN Subject: LSM Hi Bob, and thanks for the reply. I do have the Skywave kit, but the LSM, being 203 feet long in real life, is about 3+ inches long in 700. So it is just a little shy of being something I can look at and conjure up memories. I do appreciate your time, thanks. I've no use for them so, if anyone is interested, I'll take $25 each, plus whatever postage is necessary. << Hi: If they are still available, I am interested in them. Would you consider $40 plus shipping for the two?? Regards, Bradford Chaucer ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: BEN8800 Subject: Enterprise CVN 65 Am looking for a reference book. Can't find any specific on the ship, but there is a book from Zenith. US Aircraft Carriers by Friedman, that covers them all. $59.95. Is this the best there is as reference for Tamiya kit? Or do I really need it? Ben ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: Greg Lee (Listmaster - SMML) Subject: Re: Enterprise CVN 65 Hi, I am about 65 to 70% into the Tamiya Big E, and I collected a heck of a lot of stuff b4 I started, and IMHO, the only truly priceless piece of literature you will need apart from your Tamiya instruction book, and your GMM instruction sheet (which has a few minor errors concerning railing types) is detail and scales volume 39 - it has answers to the majority of questions which will arise during construction. Depending on What era you are depicting her in, there is also another book called "Airwing Enterprise"., which is especially useful when it comes to setting up your airwing. Please feel free to mail me with any questions you have on this baby, it's one of my fav's and I have spent a lot of time on mine, especially in scratchbuilding a hangar bay:-) Hope this helps! My boxes were "ratty", even new! But a well known model supplier is currently overstocked with the Russian manufactured equivalents and is asking $12 each. Regardless, they look like fun and interesting models to build. And with a little customizing, they would make fine displays. Ken, why don't you build them?
