One of these rumours is about a US WW2 Escort Carrier, but a wilder one says that they are considering Nimitz. Given the fact that they could box all Nimitz variants together, it doesn`t seem that ridiculous a business proposition. Does anyone know anything about this - or is it wishful thinking? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Sanartjam Subject: 1/700 kits from HP Models Hi, I saw the White Ensign post that included a very interesting listing of new 1/700 kits from HP Models, but I was wondering who does HP Models and where are they from. I can't remember hearing anything about them before. Thanks, Art Nicholson ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Sue & Ben Subject: Re: Painting p/e problem Hi Greg, >> Firstly, I have been experimenting with spray paining P/E and I am finding some peel and some don't. Is there a primer suitable for P/E? Like an etch prime thats fine enough not to clog, and not lumpy? << I usually spray my p/e while it's on the fret in the shade of gray my model will be painted in. I use paints from the Humbrol range, diluted 60 to 75% with lacquer thinner. It'll dry before you can say 'boo' but don't plan on keeping leftovers! I've experienced some very minor chipping when I cut the parts from the fret but never have I been confronted by peelling. What is "details and scales - Volume 39"? Ben ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: Mudbank Maru Greg: For your peeling paint problem on P/E details, try what I used to do when I was still custom painting model railroad equipment (read brass locomotives): soak the parts in vinegar before painting (or get some acetic acid from a photo shop that carries darkroom supplies, but the vinegar works as well). The acid will give it a bit of "tooth" to hold the paint. Then use Floquil's primer (actually, if you want a bulletproof primer, I used to use Ditzler automotive lacquer on occasion....) For the fantail deck, have you given any thought to simply "plating" over the existing deck with thin sheet styrene? Barring that, you can join me in the ranks of those who sand planking off of models--in my case the Revell 1/72 80' Elco PT. Not a lot of fun, but with sanding sticks it can be done. The HOOD is rare and very hard to find. If interested, call or e-mail me. To my knowledge, vol39 is still available, Kalmbach have a toll free 24hr line, 800-533-6644 Volume 39 is #05052 They take credit card orders. Most good model shops carry them, perhaps you could drop Bill Gruner at Pacific Front Hobbies a note - He might have one too! It really is worth getting if you want to do your Big E properly. Its mostly B&W, but does have a small colour gallery - If you do need pics of anything specific, let me know, I have some nice clear colour pics of the hangar bay too, D&S has B&W's, which are o.k., But colour is better, for obvious reasons. HTH Greg (Listmaster - SMML) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Michael Eisenstadt Subject: Primer Problem: Help! Folks: I'm hoping someone out there can help me with a problem I've encountered. I recently purchased the Waveline 1/700 HMS Abdiel (magnificent doesn't go far enough to describe this kit). When opening the box I noticed that Waveline is using a new, harder resin, which has a glossy finish. Anyhow, after cleaning up the main components and washing them in warm water with dishwashing detergent, I primed them with Floquil gray primer from the spray can--my personal favorite. After letting the primer dry, I noticed when cleaning up some areas with a razor blade or sandpaper after priming, that the primer was flaking off quite liberally in the areas being sanded or scraped. Likewise, when applying Testors liquid cement to small areas being spot--filled with Squadron White Stuff (I was using the cement to soften the putty) the primer wrinkled up instantly and pulled away from the resin surface. Neither of these things had ever happened before to me. Usually the Floquil primer holds to the resin quite nicely, but in this case it seems that the primer had not "grabbed" onto the resin. Any suggestions as to what I can do to better prepare the resin for repainting after I remove the first coat of primer? Inquiring minds want to know! Thanks!
