If you think ships in this scale are merely crude representations, think again. Quality and detail are stunning. These metal ships, which come painted and pre-assembled, are impressive right out of the box. You can view some outstanding examples by clicking on the 1/1250 Gallery button on the Warship home page, http://warship.simplenet.com Rob Mackie El Cerrito, California ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Alberto Rada Subject: New Kid in the Block Hi Hi everyone, I'm brand new on the list and almost so in Ship modeling, I have been modeling WW 1 Aeroplanes now for several years and belong to the WW 1 Modeling list , that is highly inclined to Aviation, a little bit of Armour and almost no Navy. I started modeling when I was about 10, that's 45 years ago, and it was my father, who for many years did ship modeling, but mainly wood models of sail ships, who started me in the hobby. I live in Venezuela S.A. but have an office in Miami FL where I spend half of my time, have 3 daughters and a wife, very understanding as they accept to live surrounded by models, model boxes, paints and all the assortment of paraphernalia you all very well know. I have a new galloping interest in ships, I feel that the scale I can work better is 1/350 and trying to do some waterlines as I feel they look more natural, I read a method of making "water" in Paolo Pizzi's page using Silicone but as I haven't seen any other method but in photographs I would like to ask other members with more experience for other methods ? ? ? Mike Brewin mentioned Polly Filla , where can it be found ( I buy most things from mail order ) also to cover it with PVA ? ? ? Mike, could you please detail a bit more this method for me ? Thank you Eric Roth for all your tips on masking etc. and I agree completely on the Colors subject, we call them the COLOR POLICE and you have to be very careful as they hide themselves in the most clever disguises, ready to jump on your just finished model and say no no no no that deck should have been " Dutch Boy Cliffhanger Grey" but we have to be kind on them as they contribute a lot to the hobby. Well thanks to all of you for your patience and SALUDOS Alberto Rada ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Les Dorr Jr." Subject: Midway class CVB info? With the advent of the GMM shipset for Midway/Forrestal/Essex, I've broken out my Revell 1:547(?) reissue of CVB-42, Franklin D. Roosevelt. Problem is, I can't find many reference pix of the carrier in its straight-deck configuration. Specifically, I'm looking for two bits of info: -- Color of the flight deck. Looks to be a darker gray than the vertical surfaces. Maybe some kind of non-skid material? -- Color of the side and island decks. In some photos they look to be a dark gray, in others there seems to be no difference between decks and vertical surfaces. I have Norman Friedman's book on design and evolution of aircraft carriers. Any other sources of CVB pix??? Les ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Dave Carter Subject: HP Models Hi Art, Lester was correct... I checked my PSM.. this could well be the same company. It seems that HP went bad ways due to poor casting quality and I assume the same company has emerged some 4 years later.. >> This was in 1994 and there may have been improvements since. << The quality of the batch we received from the U.K. importers is good, hardly any pin-holes, voiding etc. but you may have to replace the odd secondary armament gun barrel. I suppose the quality is rather akin to Classic Warships or DOC Modell.. small parts are "squash" cast to produce a thin membrane, separating the small parts...pre-cut brass rod for masts etc., no white metal parts. The bases of the models are pre-sanded at the waterline..NO photoetch included. However, the detail level on these kits is nothing like as high as our own productions, for those of you who have seen our latest creations... which, at the low price, I guess, is to be expected. I think public awareness of this history has been taken to a height never before seen. << Oh Yes - don't get me wrong - if anything can provoke an interest in things maritine, I am grateful! Especially here in the UK where, despite having such a proud and illustrious maritine history, there is little popular interest in ships. In fact there is a struggle currently going on to try and save HMS Cavalier the last RN, WWII vintage destroyer. There should have been a public outcry at her demise, but sadly, no. Now back to the Aquitania - R.U. interested? All details on the W.E.M. website. Regards, Chris ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: CHRIS DRAGE Subject: Re: Aquitania Hi Robert, >> AGREED!!!! considering that I have been studying TITANIC since 1980. But there is anothere ship as well that seems to have been missed in all the hype. "NORMANDIE" Now I've asked before for information on this lovely ship, that I consider to be WAY!!!!!! ahead of her time....but never seem to get info back. On the Aquatainia....do you have a possible cost in mind??? << All the details are on the WEM website. I have a friend who's located a picture of her in WW1 dazzle camouflage, if any one is interested. I want to model her in WWII. Does anyone have a picture/drawing showing her in wartime fit? I need to know where the guns/additional floats (if any) etc were located. Come on modellers, what about getting in touch with WEM to book your (very collectable) Aquitania kit? Speaking to Dave and Caroline, it appears it will be of the quality we are currently seeing from WEM (seen their HMS Bluebell yet...!!), complete with all etch brass and bits. Regards, Chris ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: CHRIS DRAGE Subject: require info/pictures Hi everyone, Does anyone out there have any information, pictures etc regarding C.A.M. ships? I also require info/pictures for WWII 'Victory' ships. Anyone seen a 1:700 kit of Ohio - I desperately want to complete diorama showing here being assisted into Valetta Harbour following the Pedestal Convoy. I have the destroyers built...... Anyone have info/pictures of U.S., WWII, T2 type tankers or 'Dale' Class tankers? Regards, Chris ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Uwe Besken Subject: Some Notes about HP-Models Hi everybody, Art Nicholson asks for some information about HP-Models (SMML3/3/98Vol107). HP-Models is a small company in Germany owned by Harald Poepcke. He has a shop in Wesel, Germany. I do not know if it is still so. He's doing his castings for some years, but he had some problems with the quality of his earlier models (as PSM-Readers will remember). I have met him last year at the INTERMODELLBAU in Dortmund, Germany, and he has a lot of new kits sold there. His catalogue is packed with items in progress, planned and to buy. The main scale is in 1/700 but there are planning items in 1/400, 1/350 and 1/72, overall 241 items. But only 34 were signed to be ready for ordering. He told me that the castings are made for a limited time and that some of the items are sold out for the moment, but others not in the catalogue or marked as a planning item will be soon available. I bought that day in May 1997 some US WWII Victory and Liberty ships. They were made of yellow resin with some fine details. The smaller parts are on a thin layer of resin, but also very fine. There were no PE or white metal in the package. I cannot tell anything about if the model has the right size and meassures. The price was around 40 US$. I have seen the Prinz Eugen on the Exhibition and it was well detailed. The deck lines were very fine, but the price was too much for me, around 75 US$. I think most of the buyers came from Germany and most of the models were sold on shows. He too made some figures in resin. I hope to see him on the Model show of the Plastik Modellbau Verein Frankfurt in Offenbach, Germany on 23.-24. May 1998. (See http://www.international.model-news.com/ ) If I can get some more news about HP-Models I can post it if there is some interrest. Uwe Besken, Germany ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: jdcorley@ix.netcom.com (james corley) Subject: New Jersey detail points >> For all of you building the New Jersey, here is a small detail to consider. [snip] Also, the washtub antennae on the after stack & upper superstructure just below the gun director are satcom antennas (I personally installed them on this ship & the Missouri). They are gyro controlled to track the satellite, & should both be pointing the same direction. Depending on which satellite they are looking at & where in the world the ship is, they will vary altitude & azimuth. They NEVER point straight up, though, as the model depicts. << Dale, How can these antennae never point straight up? The satellites they are talking to are either: a) LEO Satcoms that orbit at a maximum 58* (degree) inclination, in which case they could be overhead in almost all of the waters these ships operated (N58 to S58 Latitude). GPS orbits at 12,000 miles, thus giving the satellite a very long OTH window of visiblity. As a surveyor, it is not uncommon to get more than 6 of the 24 GPS in the sky at once. The most I've seen is 9, the least 2. But then again, we use a 15* masking plate to eliminate ground clutter and bounceback (multipath interferences). b) they were more likely using the GEO satellites, which orbit over the equator. In this case the OE-82 would point vertically when the ship is within a cone of about 2* wide on the surface directly under the satellite. The ONLY way these antennae could never point straight up is an orbital impossibility, geosynchronous polar orbit, where the satellite stays exactly over either pole all the time. This is impossible also because the ship could never reach either pole, unless Algore is right and we melt the icecap. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: Dave Carter Subject: WEM "End of Tax Year" Clearout Specials on Books, Kits etc!!
