Subject: SMML12/03/98VOL116 shipmodels@wr.com.au --------------------------------- ****** NOTICE TO ALL SUBSCRIBERS ****** There has been some confusion over the past few days as to some of the postings, more to the point, some subscribers have written to me privately expressing their concerns that SMML is loosing its "Flame-Free" appeal. I would just like to ask all subscribers to basically "Say what they mean", and keep the postings on the subject, and in a manner fitting to the basic rules of net-etiquette. Thanks Greg (Listmaster - SMML) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- INDEX 1: NS Savanna 2: The Color Police, and other sundry items... 3: Card Models 4: Re: WW2 carrier 5: surplus for sale 6: Profile Publications 7: 1/350th WW2 British aircraft carriers 8: Card Modeling.... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: McKellar Subject: NS Savanna Hi all just checking in with a quick status report on the NS Savannah I'm building- beautiful ship - awful kit (Glencoe 1/350). I've literally put it back on the shelf three times in exasperation. It seems everything is wrong but I can't.... quite...give...up...on... her. White paint is my latest challenge. You wouldn't think spaying a couple of thin coats of white would pose much of a challenge but I'm nearly exasperated. I've had streaks, runs, show-through....think I might finally have it licked with final dusting. Mark ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: montreal@usit.net (Jon Warneke) Subject: The Color Police, and other sundry items... Hi everyone, First, on behalf of Jeff and myself, we both want to thank everyone for getting the chart, and the positive comments concerning it. It's good to get this feedback on such a project, since it was a challenge to match up all of this stuff, not to mention finding a 1929 Munsell book. We both hope that this will assist everyone in their projects in the future, and if you have any questions, feel free to contact either of us. Now to the apology. Alberto Rada made a statement about the "Color Police" that both Jeff and I misinterpreted, and both of us sincerely apologise to Alberto for doing this. After having an intermediary explain where he was actually coming from (thanks Scott), we're now aware of where he was coming from, and are glad for what his true intentions were. Color is a matter of opinion in modeling, and the only opinion that should matter is the builders. There are people out there looking for the "perfect" model, and are willing to degrade other's work for this insane pursuit. I've been victimized by people like this, as have others, and I think we should all return to what this hobby's really about, having fun! Everything else should be secondary to this one principle. So, in concluding this little trip to the whipping post and soapbox, I'll say this. We should all look upon this hobby for what it is, a hobby, and nothing more. All of us at one time or another will do some original research, and we should be willing to share it with the rest of the community. This is Jeff and I's first contribution, and SMML has provided a great platform to do it with. I hope that this body of work will help everyone who uses it, and I sincerely hope that the Color Police don't :). Am planning to try to get a peek at a copy before laying down the considerable cost of $60, though. Builds into a large (about 4ft) replica with a seperate, even-larger-scale model of the steam engine for the paddles. Supposedly comes from a German card model company. Does anyone have souces for card models from Germany where I might find this item a little more inexpensively? Regards, Hank ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: KDur597268 Subject: Re: WW2 carrier >> Need some WW II carrier aircraft in 1/700 or larger scale if anyone has some for sale. Please e-mail me with the details. << I have an old Revell odd-scale Hornet (CV-8) w/B-25's you can offer me money for... Not sure what scale - I guess around 1/500 Ken Durling ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Percy, John" Subject: surplus for sale Hi, I've got a model kit for sale, if you're interested. Is it worth the investment ? SALUDOS Alberto ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Michelle Roth" Subject: 1/350th WW2 British aircraft carriers >> Are there any 1/350 scale full hull British aircraft carriers, and if so, who makes them? I'm especially interested in HMS Ark Royal from this era. << Hello Lee, I've never heard of any 1/350 th scale British carriers, but HELLER made a 1/400 Illustrious (full hull) which is a nice size. Let me know if you are interested and I might be able to get you one. I think WEM is working on one in 1/350th??? Check out their web page. Eric Roth ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Michelle Roth" Subject: Card Modeling.... >> Having just posted the item on the Normandie, I thought I'd ask if there's any interest in card models here? I've built one (some thirty years ago) and have fond memories that are tempting me again. There seems to be quite a varied range available and they are interesting projects -- also relatively cheap. Further, the finished product is far sturdier than might be imagined.<< Hello Ken, I am interested in card modeling too. I haven't done too much of it, but what I have done has been enjoyable. The scale of the ones I have is 1/200th and they are all coloured so no painting needs to be done on them. :-))))) They are made in Germany by Willemshaven and they do make up into quite impressive models. I have the German WW1 battleship Schleiswig-Holstien and the commerce raider Stier. Pelta is also a distributor of various brands of card models. They are a Polish on-line mail order hobby shop. Thier address is < http://www.pelta.com.pl>. They have an interesting selection of models and the card ships are quite inexpensive, although I can't vouch for the quality of the brands they stock, I'm sure a person would not be disappointed, especially considering, (as I recall) You can pick up a 1/200thscale HMS Hood for around $10.00-$12.00 U.S. The shipping charges are no bargain, but if you ordered 5 or more models, it would be worthwhile.
