All I have at the moment is the deck and antenna arrangement plans Dale kindly sent. Which reference (plans/books) would you recommend? There is a book USS New Jersey, Hard Cover, published 1997, ISBN 1563112566, ~$50, but I have no knoledge if this book worth buying as I don't know if there are any plans/drawings or decent photos included. Any suggestions and advice appreciated; Matti.Kurki ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: James Corley Subject: Re: Carrier aircraft >> I'm brand new to this NG, and new to ship modeling, although not to modeling. I've done mostly a/c up to now. Of course I had to embarass myself yesterday with my first post being a mis-reading of the request for carrier aircraft as a request for a carrier! B-25's aren't exactly "carrier aircraft!". The funny thing is I have the same question! Does or did anyone make early WW2 a/c for carriers in 1/700? I'd like to do an early '42 CV, so I'd need F4F's, SBDs and TBDs if they exist. My impression is that that the Tamiya CV-6 comes with TBFs, SB2C's and F6Fs? CV-8 of course comes with B-25's. I can't remember seeing an early Yorktown or Lexington. I'm sure someone can straighten me out. << There are several sets of 1/700 carrier planes from the "Waveline" series by different mfgs. Fujimi did a Early War USN set with F4Fs, both -3s and -4s or folded/unfolded, whichever way you want to look at it, SBDs and TBFs. The late war set has F6Fs, F4Us, SB2Cs One of them issued a postwar RN set for the EAGL with a Wessex HS, Gannett, Seafire, IIRC. Also early- and late-war IJN sets, a set for the KIEV/MINSK set, and a Harrier set. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: montreal@usit.net (Jon Warneke) Subject: Re: The Model Police - a cautionary tale. Hi Everyone, Mike has hit the nail on the head. Hypercriticality on someone else's part (actually yourself using it on what you do isn't too bad) is the bane of this hobby, and that's the reason for the defensive post. Here's why I reacted in the way I did. Before building ships, I was a platoon leader of a platoon of M48A5's, a hybrid of the M48 series of tanks. I went and got a Tamiya M48 and M60, did the necessary modifications, and created the tank I actually commanded, complete with interior. I was feeling pretty good, and entered it in a contest. Thus the criticism started. One "expert" picked everything I did apart, from the fire control mechanisms, commo boxes, Commander's mount, paint, tracks, fire extinguisers, the stuff in the bustle rack (all National Guard tank have to have the obligatory partially green painted orange Coleman cooler for our beer), and even the unit designations (which he said didn't exist). So, out come the pictures of the actual tank, and what to my surprise occured? I was accused of (get this) manufacturing the tank and the photos, including the photo of myself and my crew standing in front of it. And this is modeling? So I started building ships... What we all need to do is to remeber one salient point. What we say to others does mean something. Being critical is a good thing, as long as it's done constructively. Don't try to exert a "expertise" over another, but rather suggest improvements that you might see, while at the same time give the modeler credit for what he's accomplished. If we all try to do this type of thing, maybe we'll all learn something (and you'd be amazed by some of the things you'll learn). Jon Warneke Iron Shipwrights ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Steven Rogers Subject: Modernized Spruances I'm building the USS Peterson. Updating the Dragon kit, I've widened the hanger deck and added RAST tracks. I need to relocate the ECM emitters and the CIWS aft station. The problem...I have no good information on the platform configuration, (hatches, rails, etc), I need good inboard and forward views of the hanger deck roof, photos or drawings. Anyone building either the DD's or CG's would find the book "The Electronic Greyhounds" helpful. Thanks, S Rogers ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Bill Gruner, Pacific Front Hobbies Re: USN 1/700 Carrier aircraft...WW 2 Hi Ken, Here's what's available in aircraft for 1/700 WW 2 USN carriers: 1. Tamiya B-25s 2. Hasegawa late USN aircraft; SBDs, SB2Cs, F6Fs and TBFs 3. Fujimi early USN aircraft; SBDs, TBFs, and F4Fs. TBD Devastators are offered by both White Ensign (resin) and Pitroad (metal). White Ensign will hopefully be offering Vought Vindicators soon....maybe even F3Fs and other pre-war a/c. GMM, Tom's Modelworks and White Ensign also have photoetch 1/700 aircraft detail sets. F8F Bearcats are also offered by Pitroad, but of course they would have to be considered post-war. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: witsie/ken mckelvy Subject: WWII C.G. Cutter PERATHJEN: There's a Revell issue of the Roger B. Taney for sale on eBay right now. The URL for its page follows: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8212599 The Taney and her sister Campbell (my alma mater) were both active on the N. Atlantic convoy routes. If my memory serves me, the Taney was a bit more active/in on more kills than the Campbell -- but that's guesswork. I'm sure you'll have to do a fair amount of retro-fitting, but it shouldn't be too bad. According to the seller's blurb, the kit was originally issued in '58, so it wouldn't have been too heavily modernized. Ken McKelvy ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "DOUGLAS MARTIN" Subject: Re: Carrier Aircraft Ken: Fujimi sold the 1/700 Lexington and Saratoga, the former at least came with F4Fs, SBDs and TBFs - but no TBDs. Lexington also had 8" guns as well, plus a fair AA battery! There was a 1/700 US Naval Plane box, which I'm looking at right now, WL-150, which has 2 16 A/c sprues (you may only get 1 with the ships). 4*F4Fs, 4*SBDs, 4*TBFs, 4*F4Fs with folding wings. There were other US/RN and IJN A/c kits similarly by Hasegawa, Tamiya did the B-25s, none cover TBDs. Perhaps the resin/white metal suppliers will have some, check out WEMs site. I don't there's anything in production right now. Revell had at least one model, but I think it is OOP now, though it is still around. Revell has a 1/300 (or so) Secretary-class (327') cutter-- the Taney. It is actually shows the ship in its Korean War appearance. Back fitting it to WWII shouldn't be too hard-- you'd have to add some more weapons. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: SantMin Subject: Re: C.G.Cutters Two that I know of are the Revell ROGER B. It was made by Chenier (#CFF 1003 for $5.95), and is 1/290 scale (13.4" long, full hull, about 150 pieces). It came on 11' x 17" stiff, glossy white sheets with one page of illustrated instructions. It will have to be painted. Since he balked at building it, I bought the SMS Helgoland, an Austro-Hungarian WW1 light cruiser by The ModelCard Navy for me to build with him(Polish company @1/200, 25.6" long, full hull,$10, hundreds of pieces! in color). My son is not 11 any more and I have both of them to build now. I bought them through the Paper Models International catalog from Beaverton, Oregon. An amazing assortment of ships and planes of all time periods at good prices. Like any hobby, the experts can make these look fantastic. I don't know what a beginner plastic jock like me can do. Ships are mostly waterline but some companies offer full hull. Almost all are made in Europe. Roger Clemens ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
