Best regards Lee Francis Wilhelmsen ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Chris Hughes" Subject: HMS Hood, Big E & Lusitania... Hi Greg, Having spent the last couple of days off work to use up some annual holiday time, I've been sorting through some of my old modelling magazines. I've highlighted some useful articles which the "Ship's Company" may like to know of. HMS Hood ( ref SMML Vol 111) Scale Models, Jan 85, pages 31-34 ran an article by MW Williams. Details of proposed refit of HMS Hood 1942-45. Article based on Tamiya 1/700 Hood, adding superstructure of HMS PoW (based on the premise that Hood would have been rebuilt with KGV superstructure, probable similar to HMS Renown). Scale Models, May 84 ran an article by MW Williams on building and detailing the Tamiya 1/700 kit. USS Enterprise CV65 Fine Scale Modeller, May 93, pages 24-28 ran an article by Gary Frisch. Covers the use of the GMM PE set, deck markings, sprue "Number " lights and detailing the a/c. Lusitania Scale Models, Oct 79 - Jan 80. A series of articles by Ray Rimell as follows: Oct 79 - General history of the ship. Nov 79 - Building the kit, stages 1 - 10. Dec 79 - Building the kit, stages 11 - 17. Jan 80 - Final stages. I hope this is of some use! Chris Hughes (CJM.Hughes@BTInternet.com) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Keith Butterley Subject: Deutschland rigging Hi there. Would somebody please send me a drawing or direct me to where I can get a CLEAR picture of the rigging of the Deutschland(Lutzow). Everything I have found so far only shows a small part of it or is not clear enough to to tell just exactly where the lines go. Many thanks Ready aye ready. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Ronnie Hiatt Subject: Painting (USS) Ships Gray: As for painting model ships "gray" I realize that some/most of you want exact matches, IMHO this can NOT be done to perfection! You can open 50, 5 gallon cans of NAVY gray paint and you still have to mix em' together as you use em' they simply are NOT always "exactly" the same. For my models I have found Wal-Mart's (can I say that?) Brand, yes the cheap 99 cents stuff! "light gray" is as good of a match for a ship model as you can get. You can get completely lost in a model, become an*l retentive and never be satisfied unless you have a can of paint that actually came off a particular ship. I guess my point is, Try this cheap paint on something, check out it's color, check how nice it adheres to and looks on styrene. I believe many of you will not only be amazed at how authentic it looks but also how inexpensive it is. Don't take my word for it I'm just an amatuer and I'm sure there are many paint experts here, for the ones who are, I challenge you to test my suggestion, what can you lose 99 cents! OK you aren't happy with it! I'll give you the 99 cents back! Enterprise (CVN-65) A friend of mine is planning on building an R/C model of the "Big E" and is trying to find some hull line drawings of her. He's purchased the Floating Drydock plans, but they're pretty sparse on the hull lines. Anyone have any suggestions where some descent lines of the hull can be had?? TIA, Bruce ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Marc Raiff Subject: PE for 1/72 PTs Before I ask my question, I would like to thank Greg for putting together and running this mailing list. I have been "lurking" for a while now and I am impressed by the wealth of knowledge and the willingness to help fellow modelers. I have also learned a great deal. Thanks very much, Greg. Now that I'm off the soapbox, let me get to my question. A friend of mine is working on one of the Revell 1/72 WW2 PT boats. Since my preferred scale is much smaller, I wasn't able to help him much. Could anyone help with the following: 1) Are there any PE detail sets for these kits? 2) Are the Revell kits basically accurate? If not, what are the major pitfalls? Any recommendations for corrections? 3) Any suggestions for additional detailing (e.g.better weapons, ventilators, deck fittings, etc.) and additional crew figures? Thank very much in advance for your help. So please be a little patient with me until I find my feet, and get into a new routine. Hopefully these problems will be resolved shortly. The folks at Viking have done a nice job (we have seen one pre-production sample) and this should be a really nice kit. They are going through the old learning curve, which was nearly bound to happen on such a big project, and are working to fine-tune the kit. As always in the resin/cottage industry kit arena, patience is always a virtue.
