I am planning to do a diorama with the USS Enterprise CVN 65 (Scale 1/350), Aircraft Carrier. I know Tamiya makes it, but does anyone else? Also is there a model of the USS Enterprise CV 6. The ship before the nuclear Enterprise which is used today. << No, nobody other than Tamiya makes CVN65 in 1/350 (though there is a 1/400 Arii kit). Blue Water Navy make a 1/350 CV6 Enterprise (and a Hornet), but these are resin kits, and will cost more than a massed produced injection-moulded kit. ***NOTE FROM LISTMASTER*** Don't forget Revell's 1/400 Big E in old configuration (Domed Island) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: DKrakow105 Subject: Re: Matchbox Hello I noticed Matchbbox 700 ships getting bad press. Maybe I should bite my tongue, but I kinda like the Matchbox 1:700 Graf Spee. I really, really like the Matchbox Fletcher. I would say that, as a platform for superdetailing, the Matchbox Fletcher is definately superior to the Skywave or Tamiya releases. I haven't seen all their 1:700 releases, but in my expereince, after sanding away the crude details, the Matchbox kits start to look a lot better. What I especially like are the deckhouses; they are often sub-assemblies, which are not molded directly onto the decks. I find this makes superdetailing, modification and painting much easier. However, for mainly out-of- the-box-models, stick to the other kit makers. Dave ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Steven Rogers Subject: SMML transmission problems Hey Guys, For whatever reason the text for SMML Vols 142 and 143 did not transmit. I've noticed this happens often, twice a week sometimes. Does the send time on your end change? My server ( I'm on a LAN ) is shut down after 12midnight EDT. Best guess? Thanks, Stephen Rogers ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: reyna@nosc.mil (joseph reyna) Subject: Re: HELLER Kits >> Does anyone remember a heller kit of a french oiler. I remember building one in the 70's[?]. At least thats what I remember. If I am remembering wrong was there any other oiler kit other than the Revell. Thanks << Heller made two oiler kits, one of La SEINE and her sister La SAONE. Very nicely detailed kits, much more detailed than the "Mission" class T2's done by Revell (though I like them, too), and NOT FLAT-BOTTOMMED. I think they've been out of production for some time, so they're hard to find. If you do find a source of several kits, please let me know, as I'm always looking for either of these fine model kits. Cheers. You can preview the brass set and instructions onsite as well, so you know what you're getting ahead of time. It is also very affordable at $14.00 US. The Eduard set provides no bottom rail, so your only mounting points are the actual stanchions. I bought the set, and used everything but the railings. The TMW set is much more crisp. All the info is there to contact him, make sure you tell him you say it on his website... Jeff Herne WARSHIP - Coming Soon!! I recommend that you use white glue to attach the stuff. Thin it with water just a bit, apply some glue to one end of the railing section, and hold it to the deck with tweezers for a few moments until it sticks. Then using a small brush, run a bead of the thinned glue along the bottom rail of the brass, on both sides, going about two inches at a time. The glue will dry faster than you would think, so you can make good progress this way. Make sure that there are no nubs on the bottom of the rail that are elevating it above the deck surface. I don't think stainless steel photoetch a good idea- the stuff is almost always thicker and heavier than brass and will not look as good. It is also much harder to bend and shape. Good luck JG ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: USS ENTERPRISE (CV-6) kits CV-6 is produced in 1:700 in a plastic injection kit; in 1:350 there is a resin kit, but you're going to be looking at close to $800.00 US to acquire one. It was suggested that it was at "Navis" under "Rajenda's List". I believe this is correct, however, browsing through the site, most of which is restricted to paid subscribers only, I cannot find any reference to a comprehensive listing. I have asked web owner, Paolo, for assistance, but have not had a reply. << You can get to Rajen's List directly at http://www.navismagazine.com/rajendra.htm As far as I can tell, you don't need to be a subscriber to get the list. Paolo has been providing us the space for free, and we're grateful for that. The original intention of the list was to provide a comprehensive list of "mini-reviews" so that there would be at least some conventional wisdom about what's good and what's not. The theory is that if we only buy the good stuff, and avoid the junk, it will be good for the hobby as a whole. This is why we do it as a public service. We are still accepting reviews, however for a couple of reasons, we haven't been able to put a new version out in a while. If you've got a review, send it to Rajen, or to me, as I'm interim editor while Rajen is off indulging his education habit again. We will accept pretty much anyone's opinion, even if it differs from the editors' own. Just keep it reasonably short, and use the same format as the other reviews. David R. Wells ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Rajendra Nath Datta Subject: Re: Kit listing offer - again Hi, Dave is the editor and administrator of the ShipList. I have gotten too busy with work and school to do any model-building, or upkeep of the list. I agree with Dave that we do not want to charge money for it. This was supposed to be a help guide for beginning ship-model builders, and a public-domain effort. I feel we will have failed if we move away from that philosophy. I will respect and support Dave's decisions in choosing a site as he sees fit. I have a web-page at school, and I have finally (last week) haggled out some space on it. But as per Parkinson's law, my needs seem to rise up to meet the availibility. However, I am not too keen on having the ShipList on the school site, because I will be done in a year, and this cannot be a "permanent" solution. As far as disputes and flame wars are concerned, I think Dave has hit the nail on the head. I am a very key-happy person, and I had to exercise quite a bit of restraint to keep my opinions to myself at that time. Rajen ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Gene Larson Subject: Rajenda's List Tonight I tried Rajenda's List again from Navis and it connected. Previously when I tried I received a message to insert a password. That is really strange! Anyway, I still understand that the list is out dated. Thanks to all. Let's see where this goes from here. My offer still stands if needed, but I will be completely happy if I can "hot link" a good listing. My list includes plastic models (in and out of production) as well as wooden models and RC boats. I've posted it on a web page: http://www.tiac.net/users/billkaja/kitlist.htm I'm sure I'm missing things. I'd like a list of USCG decals, and I'm sure my OOP kit list is incomplete. Here's a great one: If anyone is interested in obtaining plans for USCG vessels, I highly recommend contacting the Coast Guard Museum, 1519 Alaskan Way South, Seattle, WA 98134 (206) 217-6993. They have a good selection of factory/official plans for most of the major 20th century types, plus a few from the mid-19th C. Print quality varies somewhat, but is generally very good. Prices are very, very reasonable and service is excellent. I knew the fellow that runs it-- he's an excellent ship modeler and a retired USCG Captain. The Museum is open 9-3 PST, M-W-F. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: DHJonesPSM Subject: Re: Heller kit of tanker Yes, there was a Heller kit of a french oiler. It was kit number L750, the SEINE. I had one many years ago - no more. It is unfortunately a hard kit to find now. Maybe Heller may re-issue it some day. So, if you want it you'll have to subscribe. Another site offers a similar list and guess what, for a charge... (*) Navis is getting about 2,000 hits a day, documentation available and backed by our web provider. Counters are just too easy to tamper with andshould not be trusted, that's why we don't use one. DISCLAIMER: THIS IS NOT AN ATTACK AGAINST ANYBODY AND IT DOES NOT IMPLY THAT WHOEVER USES A COUNTER IS CHEATING, just my "educated" opinion on the matter. All we ask is a mere $1.66 per month and what we give back is something that no free site will ever give you, simply because it's too damn expensive. We are not planning to get rich with Navis but to do what's never been done before. A tradition of Navis, the FIRST site dedicated to shipmodeling, imitated but never equalled. Our model gallery is the largest in the world and about to be tripled over the next months. If you think that all of this work is not worth $1.66 then wait until someone gives it to you for free. We try as much as possible to pass these requests on to the various manufacturers such as Pitroad, White Ensign, Classic Warships, WSW, etc. What would you like to see? The manufacturers would like to know, in order to be able to produce models that will be not only interesting and new, but also commercially successful. Some subjects we know are in the works, and due to be released in the next year, are HMS Sussex and HMS Chester WW 1 by White Ensign; Waveline IJN Subs HA-201 and HA-101; Skywave IJN Subs I-13 and I-14; Skywave USN Liberty Ship; USS Wasp; USS Wichita; USS Garcia Class frigate; HMS Warspite (possibly by 2 manufacturers); Italian battleships Roma and V.Veneto. A number of WW 2 era Italian warships are due to be released by Regia Marina and Delphis in the next year. Pitroad plans some new releases for WW 2 German and Japanese aircraft, and White Ensign is still plotting to cover all the world's known, and some unknown, aircraft by the millenium.
