I saw one in a shop window and was mighty impressed. What companies make and sell the best quality and most accurate paper ship models? I may try one for kicks. Probably can learn some new techniques for the plastic wood and metal variety! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: DKrakow105 Subject: RMS Titanic illumination For several years, I have been collecting data for superdetailing the 1:350 Titanic kit. The movie really helped bring a lot of information relevant to building a model of her (gulp) to the surface. I decided to go one step further and add interior and exterior illumination to my model. I therefore have the following question. Were the stacks on the Titanic illuminated by deck-mounted spotlights, as in the movie, or was that just (more) poetic license by the special effects department? If the stacks were illuminated, where were the spotlights mounted? Regards Dave ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: robin Subject: Re: wish list Hi all, I would like to add my two cents on the wish lists... How about some more ocean liner models made? the ones I have come across are the QE2, Titanic(I wonder why?), Lusitania, Queen Mary, some of the Japanese liners, & I've heard about the first Mauretania from Airfix in 1:600, & also in 1:200 from someone else, also the France II from Airfix, the Canberra from Airfix.... but there is clearly not enough liners made, yes I do warship models, but there is more to ship modelling than just sailing yachts & warships, lets see some liners..... For instance..., how about in 1:350? Mauretania I Queen Elizabeth Rex Deutchland Kaiser Wilhelm Der Grosse Normandie Aquitania (in 1;350) Empress of britain Bremen (II) with the squat funnels Kronprinz Wilhelm Kronprinzessen Cecile Windsor Castle Queen Mary (in 1;350) France (I) of 1912 Paris Ile De France Europa United States Leviathan/Vaterland Imperator/Berengaria Bismarck/Majestic Columbus/Homeric To name a few.... :-> Or in 1:700 or 1:600, personally i like 1:350 or bigger, as they are more detailed... Anyway, thats my 2 cents, anyone care to add 98c ?? Cheers & 73's, ordrazz http://www.ne.com.au/~ordrazz/WELCOME.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: BECJPARKER Subject: What rivets should look like. If you would really like to see how rivets should be done you need to take a look at the BWN South Dakota Class Battleships. They have all the rivet detail correct and to scale on the turrets, It makes for one really impressive kit. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Steven Rogers Subject: USN Prewar paint I just ordered one of the last remaining 1/350 BB44 kits from Commander's. The summer of 1941 seems to be the time when the Pacific fleet went to measure 1 camo. Can anyone tell me the exact date or atleast the month the paint changed and also the deployment dates of Kingfisher float planes to the California. Why you ask?... I like the light gray paint better and I will have Kingfishers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Hess1962 Subject: Carrier deck decals Thanks to everyone who responded to my quest for sources for these decals in 1/1200 scale. FYI, the best solution was found at a local art supply dealer. A firm called "Letraset" produces press-on letters & numerals in a amazing variety of font types and sizes. The sheets are large (10" x 20" or so) and quite pricey ($20 US per sheet), but I found their "Compacta" font numbers in 48-point size a very good approximation for 1/1200 carrier numbers and, by careful use of an X-acto knife, I was able to modify the solid white lines that separate rows of letters/numbers on each page into very realistic dashes running the length of the flight deck. The film takes Dullcote paint well and is easy to work with. A wide variety of point sizes would seem to make this product suitable for use in most scales. Thanks a bunch, Greg, for providing this forum for us. Keep it flame-free and mutually helpful! Re Wish List: I would like to see the following in 1/700 scale; British Battle Class Destroyer, British Weapon Class Destroyer, Leander Class Frigate, all versions, Ocean Going Tugs, Civilian, HMS Ocean, 1940s. USS Hancock- The Hasegawa kit. Can anyone venture an opinion on this kit? How accurate a representation is it of the carrier or of the carrier class? Can anyone give an adress for Doc Modell Models in Europe? I would like to get hold of the kit of the USS Calway. Thanks for your help, Jim Owen. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Greg Lee (Listmaster - SMML) Subject: Re: USS Hancock Hey Jim, Have you seen the 1/48 (I think?) model of the USS Hancock at the Bremerton Naval Museum? Its VERY Impressive - I have pics too! Mike Eisenstadt ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: Michael Eisenstadt Subject: O Class Destroyers Shane: The best source for info on correcting and detailing the Skywave/Tamiya O Class Destroyer is an article, "British Destroyers: War Emergency Type," by Nat Richards and Larry Gertner, published in IPMS Quarterly, v. 18, no. 4, Summer 1983, pp. 42-49. The article includes scale drawings illustrating exactly how you need to modify the kit for accuracy. It's very useful. The camouflage information accompanying the article, however, is inaccurate, and you'd best rely on Ensign 6, "War Built Destroyers O to Z Classes," by Alan Raven and John Roberts, with its beautiful color plates. If you would like a copy of the IPMS article, send me your address and I'll send it to you. One major fault of the Skywave kit not discussed in the Richards/Gertner article is that the deckhouses and bridge structure have slightly sloping sides. This fault is not easily corrected, though it may not be so obvious when the kit is built up. I'm not sure this was corrected in the Tamiya reissue. Happy Modeling!
