The most glaring errors are the incorrect side hangar doors and the island, which is just painful to look at as it come out of the box. That being said, I have seen a few modelbuilders make something very presentable out of it. The Detail and Scale series of references has a volume on the Essex class, the last chapter in there has a very nice, highly detailed outline on converting Hasegawa's lump of plastic into a decent model. The book is well worth the money. If you are planning a serious effort, get the Gold Medal or Tom's photo etched parts, too. The movie really helped bring a lot of information relevant to building a model of her (gulp) to the surface. I decided to go one step further and add interior and exterior illumination to my model. I therefore have the following question. Were the stacks on the Titanic illuminated by deck-mounted spotlights, as in the movie, or was that just (more) poetic license by the special effects department? If the stacks were illuminated, where were the spotlights mounted? << I looked into the several books and other information that I have, including a picture of the Olympic at night and do not see the stacks illuminated other than by the mast head lights and the wash of the deck lights. There are no flood lamps on the rigging and deck plans that I received from Harland and Wolff (and as she sunk on her first voyage I doubt that there were many undocumented additions). And as she carried the White Star Line emblem on a pennant rather than on the stacks, I don't see any reason why they would be illuminated. In short, they could have been (I am by no means an expert on the subject) but I doubt it. However, if it makes the model more dramatic, what the heck? Regards, Duane Fowler ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Richa5011 Subject: O Class Destroyers I greatly appreciate Michael Eisenstadt's comment about the article I wrote many years ago. It may interest the readers of this list to know that I have revised and updated the article for an upcomming issue of Navis. A significant amount of additional information has been added as well as correcting what I now know to be inaccuracies. We appear to all be in agreement that, in some respects, the Tamiya release of the kit is an improvement over the original Skywave release, yet there are many things that can be done, even by less experienced modelers, that will greatly improve the looks of this model. Virginia class 1980s Iowa class BBs (Revell New Jersey isn't made any more, and it needed a great deal of Skywave parts and other detailing) Wanted in either 1/700 and 1/350 (latter prefered): US Austin class LPD (amphibs are a neglected group in general) US Sacramento class AOE (as are support vessels) US Essex class CV, long hull version Note: I've asked Tom Harrison (Tom's Modelworks) about this. He's considering doing one after he finishes the current short hull, _if_ it sells OK. So if you want a big short-hull Essex, buy it, so I can get my long hulls for CV-37, CVS-37 and LPH-5. I only can agree with Roger Clemens about the anniversary of 1898. It would be nice to have a model of Cristobal Colon (italian Garibaldi class), Vizcaya class cruisers, or Terror class destroyers (all of them lost at Santiago). I not dared to propose those ships by fear to appear "chauvinist". And for what survived that ordeal, what about battleship Lepanto (french built) or Carlos V cruiser? There are some ships that, as being foreing built, can be produced for modellers of more than a country (What a dream !) Finally, Roger, you probably noted that I'm not Shakespeare, that is, for me, at least, it's enough that you know our ships. BTW if any want to know the botched names, let me know. Thanks Javier ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: jim burt Subject: Re: Wish list Hi, to all. I saw the article posted for a wishlist, & can tell of two sites to where you may email them to ask if it is possible to build these models. Visit: http://www.cabinclass.com http://www.maritimereplicas.com I recently asked them about some of these models, I know that In Maritime Replicas they are going to build Mauretania, Aquitania, in 1/350 scale & an SS United States possibly in 1/350, & even an Andrea Doria in the same scale! Hope this helps. Steve B ----------------------------------------------------------------------------10) From: Mark Knowlton Subject: 40mm Bofers >> I'm new to the art of ship modeling. I usually dable in 1/48 WWII aircraft. I've developed an interest in 1/700 ship modeling. My current task is the 1/700 Enterprise CV-6. I'm using the Tamiya kit and have found in my research the need to do some "modifications" with the bridge and armament. My questions are the following: I'm looking for quad and dual 40mm Bofors (700 scale). Does anyone have a suggestion? I'm not sure if the Skywave detail sets contain any? Does anyone have ideas for adding any detail to them. I'm also in the same boat (pardon the pun) for the 5' guns. The detail of the 5' in the kit seems to be lacking. << Yes, the Skywave set has the bofers in both quad and twin in set #48, and the newer set E-9. The fittings in E-9 are more to scale and would be the better choice, but you still need #48 to get the tubs. I too, am in the process of trying to accurize the Tamiya Enterprise, that bridge is atrocious! I'm doing mine in her dazzle scheme of 1944. The floating drydock plans are definitely a big help. I bought the SMS Helgoland @ 1/200 for $9.95 and the USS Maine @ 1/290 for $5.95. They are full hull, have hundreds of parts and should not be laughed at. Degree of difficulty Level 3 to 5.
