I have always glued the deck to the hull before painting. That way I am assured a good fit with no gaps and no glue smears. The time spent masking the hull, if necessary, is well worth the end result. On some ships, where the wood planks come almost right up to the hull sides, you dont even need to mask. Paint the decks first. Then, when painting the sides, just flip the hull upside down, angle your airbrush at 45 degrees to the sides and spray away. As long as you are at that angle and spraying from behind, the decks will be in the "shadow" of the hull's sides and none of the paint will touch the deck, (just be sure that you are not getting any "bounce" off the surface that the hull may be resting on) Regards D ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: William Swan Subject: Re: Paper Ship Models >> To add to the paper ship model discussion - have a look at the following> URL. It is a page on Marcle Model's site and is advertising what must be the ultimate ship model. http://www.bogo.co.uk/marcle/sd14.htm It is a cardboard model of an SD14 general cargo ship and you basically put it together as you would a real ship with a piece of cardboard for every steel plate in the ship. It is in 1:70 scale, has 4,500 pieces and makes up to over 7 feet in length. Awesome. So is the price. << OMG!!!!! I went to this URL. I’m toast. I can’t believe this thing. Take a trip out there guys, its worth it. William Swan ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Bradford Chaucer Subject: Re: Marine assault ships >> anyone out there know if there are any large scale (1/350) of the USS Kersage or the Tarawa? << Ted Paris talked about doing a Kearsage (the Pre WW1) version a while back. Perhaps Jon Warneke (ARE You Listening?) knows if this is still on the burner. >> I recently recived a new price list from Combat Models. They show a USN LCI Landing Craft (kit no. 72-600) in 1/72 scale. They also show a USN LST in 1/72 scale. << I don't want to spread gossip, but on R.M.S., the name Combat Models usually gives rise to a flood of derision and comments like unbuildable! Finally just to add my 2cents worth to the wish list, mine is in 1/3500 or 1/196 USS Brooklyn (Pre WWI cruiser) Early US Subs (WW1 and earlier) USS New York a Decent Oregon USS Bainbridge (1/196 scale, the 1/350 is too small!) Any other ships of the great white fleet Regards, Bradford Chaucer ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Paolo Pizzi Subject: Re: When in Rome? >> Hi, I will be in Rome, Italy in a few weeks. Any suggestions for a model shop catering to us mariners? << BABY'S STORE MODELLISMO SRL viale XXI APRILE N 40- 00162 ROMA ITALY TEL O6\44238578 FAX 06\44241302 - E MAIL: mailto:babystore@vol.it These are the guys that run Delphis. I've never seen the shop though and I don't know what they have besides the Delphis line. Rome's largest hobby shop is "Giorni", I don't know where they are now because someone told me they recently moved. But I know that they're still in the "Prati" area (near the Vatican City.) You can find them in the telephone directory or yellow pages. Hope it helps. Paolo Pizzi http://navismagazine.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: SantMin Subject: Re: 1/700 corvette >> And to prove what a truly xenophobic Canadian that I am: a Corvette Can you imagine trying to build one of those in 1:700 :) << If I'm not mistaken, Jim Shirley has these in resin kits in 1/700. Bob Santos ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Alan Simon" Subject: USS Grand Canyon (AD28), Shenandoah Class Destroyer Tender Planning a static modeling project to honor ship on which I served as DASH Officer, 1969-71. Prefer 1/700 waterline (may add FRAM Gearing for diorama) but will consider full hull, any scale down to 1/192. Need modified C-3 hull kit, as basis for kitbashing project. Grand Canyon had FRAM-type DASH deck/hangar aft and was re-classified as a Repair Ship (AR28), 3/71. Any suggestions? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Colm O'Leary" Subject: wishlist What I'd REALLY like to see...... (but I can't see it happening) would be more Liner kits. I'd really love it if there were good 1/350 plastic kist of say... the Queen Mary, Normandie, Ile de France, Aquatania, Bremen or Imperator. Some of the german four-stackers would be great too. Am I the only person out there who loves model ships but isn't intrested in Warships??? CJ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Dave Carter Subject: Kangnam Models Hi Guys and Girlies, Well, to answer a question both from both Graham Walker and Jo Reyna, as we have just had these kits arrive, these ARE in fact the ARII kits... they do not carry the Harpoon anti-ship missile launchers and yes, Joe, the helo IS a melding of the SH-2 Seasprite and the SH-3 Sea King! However, they are considerably cheaper than the ARII offering (the price Graham quoted is the U.K. tax inclusive price). Build 'em and maybe have fun with the kids at bathtime, as they are all motorised! Cheers, Caroline Carter White Ensign Models ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: TANewell Subject: Re: GMM KGV PE Set >> Also does any one know the contents of gmm Pe sets for the KGV 1/350 tamiya? << My son Ryan is finishing up his 1/350 Prince of Wales, using the GMM KGV/PoW set. The photoetch set is very good. It contains all of the usual railings, ladders, and stairs, plus a bunch of other goodies...the boat cranes (really impressive, with about 15 parts in each one), degaussing cables, dipoles for the radars, rails and sights for the 2 pndrs and bofors, shields, sights, elevating wheels, and even shoulder rests for the 20 mm guns, watertight doors, yardarms, and struts and props for the walrus seaplane on the PoW. Well worth the price.
