I'm sure I'm not alone in saying what an eye opener their experiences are. I know that there's no way I'm good enough to even attempt making my hobby into a paying concern. What did interest me , simply because it echo's the experiences of my friends in modelling, is that it's impossible get over to a non modeller just how much time it takes to build a decent model, and how much it should cost if the time is being charged at a realistic rate. I know at least one friend who had a commission rejected because it cost too much, (moral, agree the price up front!). The other thing that interested me in the posts was the feeling of having to work to deadlines, and how that has an impact on the "enjoyment factor". I have a couple of books at home on ILM, (the Star Wars effects house), when they were building the Star Destroyer for the "The Empire Stikes Back", the team building it were working essentially round the clock on it for something like a month. The effects of that on your health doesn't really bear thinking about, (the total model was costed at approx. $100,000 in 1980 dollars BTW). I'll stick to my hobby and stay in computing to pay for it. Colin Ritchie ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Nowfel Leulliot Subjct: Emden or the Dresden Hello, I'm a recent convert to ship modelling (I've built mostly aircraft up to now) and I'm considering buying the Revell Emden or the Dresden. While I would normally have gone for a WW2, 1/700 scale waterline kit, these models look very good and the price is right ! So the questions I'd like to submit to this group's collective experience (and resulting wisdom ;-) ) are the following : - First of all, is this kit suitable for someone relatively new to ship models? Or would I be biting off more than I can chew? - Comments on RMS regarding accuracy are pretty good so I'd like to know wether there are any pitfalls or particular areas to watch out for during assembly ? Thanks, Nowfel Leulliot - Paris, France ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Skip Thompson Subject: Re: Artesania Latina, S.A. Good luck Ray, with getting your fittings. (not being sarcastic, just wishing you well :) I have often wondered what would happen if one of these kits ended up missing parts. The books advise one to carefully go over all the contents of the box to make sure everything is there, and if not, have one's hobby dealer replace anything missing. I always suspected this sounded like "Ivory Tower Advice". Skip Thompson Kent, WA (USA) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: SHIP MDLR Subject: Re: missing model parts >> I am in need of the email or web page address for Artesania Latina, if they have one. Yesterday I purchased their Virginia Pilot Boat 1805, and it was missing all of the fittings. All of the wood planking, bulkheads, spars and masts, and everything else was there including sail cloth. The big problem is that the hobby shop can't do very much since they get their stock from a distributor, therefore, I am somewhat up the proverbial creek without the necessary motion apparatus (paddle). Any help will be appreciated. << Dear Ray, Don't let your hobby shop give you that we're not responsible crap. I sell to distributors all over the world and I can tell you they can contact the distributor for a replacement kit. You may have to wait while the kit is being ordered, but that's the worst of it. I think your hobby shop is trying to blow you off. He paid top dollar for the kit and the distributor has to stand behind it. The distributor in turn will notify the company to replace thier model kit. If the model company won't replace the kit they won't be around long since they live and die by thier distributors. I know this doesn't help much. I thought you should know how this business works. Rusty White Flagship Models ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Jeff Herne" Subject: Volunteer Needed Greetings everyone. I need a volunteer, preferably North East US, to build a Tamiya 1/350 USS New Jersey (modern). The model is for a veteran's group here in NJ, I have 3 going right now in a production line setting, 75% done, and don't think I can manage to bring myself to build a 4th from zero. I will provide kit, brass, and will cover shipping. The model's plaque will have the builders name on it. There's a deadline too, about 8-10 weeks from the time of delivery. While the model does not have to be show WINNING quality, it should be built to near competition quality level. Drop me a note directly if you're interested. Many thanks... However, there is one area of which we are uncertain. Does anybody know which decks were planked and which were steel. Also any suggestions as to what colour the steel decks would have been in her original white hulled scheme? Any info most welcome, and, of course, if anyone requires further details of the kit when it is ready, we would be happy to oblige. Cheers, Dave Carter mailto:xdt22@dial.pipex.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Rod Anderton Subject: Water Line Series (1/700 kits) Fellow Modelers, Has anyone ever built, looked at, or seen a 1/700 scale "Water Line Series" (I found this under "http://www.GreatModels.com" a nice page with good prices and a very good search engine for finding kits). I'm interested if anyone knows of where they came from and the quality of the kits. I'm assuming by the price that they are probably "old" molds sold under another name. It's ANZAC** day in Australia and New Zealand - the principal day of remembrance for all those who served and sacrificed in war. To all those who served, I just want to say ... THANK YOU Men and women who served for our freedoms paid with their lives, limbs and health, and many others pay a price still in thousands of other ways - the nightmares, ghosts and demons that plague them always. We who have lived in peace all our lives are indebted to them and the families who paid a high price too. ** For those outside Australia and New Zealand: ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, and refers to the group of valiant soldiers who stormed the steep and heavily defended cliffs at Galipoli in Turkey in 1915 on April 25th. The ANZACs and soliders from other armies - and the Turks too - lost a great many brave men in that campaign as the Turks fought fiercely for their land. Ever since, Australians and New Zealanders have turned out at dawn in towns and villages wherever they are to remember the ANZACs and the legions of others who have paid the price demanded of war. Happily, since the Welcome Home march for Vietnam Vets in the late 80s (I can't remember which year) the numbers of veterans and appreciative public turning out for the Dawn Services and the ANZAC Day Marches have been increasing. More and more children march wearing their Dad's or Granddad's medals, representing them, thereby perpetuating the memory of the price paid by those who have passed on.
