Thanks Pwesty@ida.net ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Torgeson Roger A Subject: Richelieu colors Having lost total control of my mine I am going to try to build Heller's French Battleship Richelieu with the multi false bow camouflage paint scheme. As Richelieu was completed in 1943 at the New York Navy Yard I assume she was painted in US colors. The few photographs that I have seen, and a set of 9 photo copies of official navy photographs I received from the National Archives lead me to believe that haze gray (5-H), Ocean Gray (5-O) were used along with a dark color. That's the problem, what is the color? Is it Navy Blue (5-N) or Dull Black (BK). The boot topping does look darker then the darkest hull color so I think it may be Navy Blue but does anyone know for sure. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: HGYL Subject: Re: Abdiel Class Minelayers I for one would appreciate it if Art Nicholson would post the negative numbers and contact adresses for the Abdiel class photos Harold Lincoln ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: HGYL Subject: Re: Rothesay and Loch/Bay class Frigates I am pleased to see that Caroline Carter is writing an article on the Rothesay class. Where and when will it be published? Does anyone know where I can get plans of the Rothesy class and also of the Loch/Bay class? I have long thought that these ships have been neglected by modellers Harold Lincoln ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: HGYL Subject: Re: Rigging Materials There has been some useful exchange recently about rigging materials. Can anyone tell me where I can buy a supply of 38SWG (or finer) tinned (not varnished, must be tinned) copper wire ? Harold Lincoln ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: BEN8800 Subject: Chrome This probably applies more to car models than ships (thats what I am working on now). The plastic kits with pre-chromed parts often have sprues attached. When you cut off the sprue you leave a small unchromed area. What is the best paint or process for touching up these little blemishes? something like Floquil silver is no good - don't look like chrome. I don't see anything listed as chrome in Model Masters metalizer. Ben ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: SantMin Subject: Re: resin casting >> In reply to those who have suggested resin casting these small boats,is it difficult to get the resin to fill the small cavities in the mold, (for this project, the thwarts)? This is the major problem I found with the lead casting. My masters were not great but I believe I could make them better with more patience and practice. << James, The problem here is not the resin, but the "technique". First off you want to use one of the fast setting resins such as Alumalite or MicroMark. Make your mold in two pieces, one that coves the entire outside of the boat up to the gunwales and the other to cover the iterior, DO NOT MAKE A POURING SPRUE, but DO MAKE INDENTATIONS so the mold halves will always line up. Then use the "squash" method of casting. Slightly overfill each mold half and just as the resin in thickining, place the halves together and put some weight on top of it. After a little practice,in a few minutes you will have perfect little boats with all detail filled in. True, sometimes I get imperfect ones, but no big deal. Resin is cheap and easy to use and in this scale the wastage is inconsequential.
