Also, necessary changes to Revell's Titanic to represent Olympin in her WWI configuration? Thanks, Kenneth Hagerup ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: DKrakow105 Subject: Revell Emden Actual Scale I'm not too enthusastic about Revell's Emden, great subject matter, average kit. The deckhouses molded to the deck and the corny wood grain planks remind me of the kits I hacked away at as a little kid in the 1970's. A while ago somebody wrote in explaining that Revell's 1:350 Emden measured short length and beam. Anyone figure out the actual scale of the kit? Is it closer to 1:400? David Krakow Frankfurt, Germany ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Suvoroff Subject: Evergreen Oval Rod >> Has anyone noticed lately (or have I been the only unlucky soul to purchase them) that the Evergreen plastic rod in sizes .020", .030", and .040" aren't round? << Yes, I just noticed this myself. For some applications it does not matter, but I find it really irritating myself - it should be easer for them to make their rod round than for me to do it for them. Yours, James D. Gray ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: DKrakow105 Subject: Emden colors, again. >> When Emden was sunk she was gray overall << Yes, this is correct. Note however, that it was the custom (for purposes of camoflage and/or tradition) to paint the hull of German Naval ships in WWI and early WWII a slightly darker shade of grey than the superstructure. The difference in tone is veeeeery slight, but you can make it out in a clear photo. The effect on a model is very pleasing to the eye. Life rings add a splash of color to an overall grey Emden. They were painted red. One other color feature of the deck: round manhole covers for the coaling ports midships, these were made of brass, and probably left unpainted. Obviously you got me on a favorite topic.... :) David Krakow Frankfurt Germany ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: KDur597268 Subject: Re: Shrinking Models >> would like to know if it is possible to reduce or shrink plastic injected models say the Airfix naval kits from 1/600 to 1/700. If it is possible how can it be done? << I wish! Perhaps this would be a new application of one of the above mentioned vacuum chambers! Somehow I think we'd need to pull more than 30", though. Now if I could get that 1/48 Beaufighter down to 1/72 . . . But seriously. Is the gentleman possibly referring to the legendary "pantograph?" This is just a design tool - a drawing tool as I understand it. After the new, smaller, drawings were produced, you'd still be faced with making a new master, mold, etc. Or are there actually machines that will cut reduced patterns from a larger master? Famous example being the Revellogram F-101B in 2 scales which is supposedly the "same" kit scaled down. (Sorry don't know any maritime examples.) I wonder if any of our manufacturing friends know how this is done in the "industry"? Sounds expensive. If it is possible how can it be done? << Hi Kevin, There are some that claim that this can be done, but here's what I've found out about the procedure. The resin that is used to do this has a variable shrink rate from 5 to 15 percent, so there is a uncontrollable factor in creating an accurate scale model. Second, this resin has a lot of air contained in it, and thus the castings have a lot of air pockets remaining when it cures that would need to be filled before a new mold is made, destroying some of the detailing. This would preclude a lot of the smaller parts from being duplicated. It can be done, but it's a lot easier to take a 1/600 scale kit and use it as a pattern to scale it down to 1/700 scale. I have a end of the war picture of the Puncher with the no. 79 on her hull just aft of the anchor. Hope that is of some help. regards Keith Butterley Ready aye ready ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: SHIP MDLR Subject: Re: Shrinking Models >> I would like to know if it is possible to reduce or shrink plastic injected models say the Airfix naval kits from 1/600 to 1/700. If it is possible how can it be done? << Kevin, This is indeed possible. Model manufacturers do it all the time. Unfortunately, it's horendously expensive. It involves re-tooling the solid steel molds. The down sizeing is done by computer to cut the new, smaller, molds. Did some 'clicking' on the symbols at Xmas, and came across the 'Rainbow Ten' site in Tokyo. Some more symbol clicking and lo and behold, an English version of the site. Well, Hitoshi Mochizuki is the main man, and I asked for info on his books etc, was able to pick up 2 Model Art books, Drawings of the IJN Warships book 7, vol 2 (Cruisers), to add to my book 6, vol 1 (BBs and DDs), at a miserably low price of 1350 yen. Yoweeee! The second book was 1/700 Scale Model Japanese warship hand book, a complete? list of all the 1/700 warships on the market. Included on page 58/59 were Jinyo and Kaiyo, 62-64, Shoho, Zuiho and Ryuho! [] Now these all appear to be Pitroad or Skywave kits and may be part resin, as I cant understand any Japanese (a minor handicap), I can't tell you of their availability-but see below.. Here is the website: http://www.wbs.or.jp/bt/models/english/index.html Hold the press!! Zuiho and Rhuho in the ship list at 6000-6500 yen! If this is of help, please let me know, its good to be able too return a few favours! Thanks for your help, JOHN COCHRAN ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS & ANNOUNCEMENTS ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: Dave Carter Subject: White Ensign Models 1/350 Sheffield Hi Guys, We hope everyone has checked out the splendid effort that Jon Warneke has put into the Iron Shipright Sheffield... and at only $220.00 in the U.S. (plus 10% shipping worldwide). If not, take a look on: http://warship.simplenet.com However, for about ANOTHER $20.00 (which is £12.50 pounds in English money), if you place your pre-order NOW, you can buy the WEM 1/350 Sheffield... and have it shipped WORLDWIDE POST FREE!! Why does the WEM Sheffield have to be $20.00 more expensive?? Well, for starters, you are getting almost 3 TIMES the quantity of etched brass, and our computer generated designs are now recognised as being up in the spotlights with the likes of Gold Medal Models. There is much in this production that will ONLY be revealed in the photos, but, to give you an idea.. some of the Sheffield super-details that make Brian Fawcett's work stand out from everyone else's in this business... Porthole eyebrows over every porthole (never done before in 1/350 Scale), actual in-scale hull plating (yes, I'm talking hull plating, not armour belt), true to scale planking (not scale 1.5 foot wide planks with 6 inch trenches between them that comes with Evergreen) and true-scale anti-skid plating, fully detailed hangar interior with spare aircraft parts/equipment racks.. the super-detailed (and I mean even cylinder detail here!!) Walrus has a fab selection of etched brass.. there are parts for both early and late 41 fits so that you can build it in that wacky scheme.... Why are we doing this? There are some out there who have only dreamed of buying the WEM 1/350 Hood... Now you can have have a BIG kit which, guaranteed, will be BEYOND state of the art, for a (relatively) low price.. we will be posting pics on the WEM website shortly... we will even put a link down to pics of the IS 1/350 Sheffield so that people can compare products (not many people out there can get to the US IPMS Nationals at California). (P.S.Check out Paolo's 1/700 Bluebell build on NAVIS for a demo of WEM's awesome quality and attention to detail, even on a 3 1/2 inch long kit!) I can let people have USN Ensigns, Japanese Ensigns, modern German, WWII German decals,Russian and French Naval Decals all in 1/700 scale. Thank you in advance Graham. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Dave Carter Subject: Re: Pit Road Plastic Kit Hi Nuno, Re the Zuiho, you might try Bill Gruner at Pacific Front Hobbies... the Zuiho is actually a resin kit by the way... and pretty expensive. We don't tend to keep large numbers of Pit-Road resin kits in stock at WEM, as they can take up to 8 months to receive, after ordering and paying for them up front, and the demand in the U.K. is minimal. I think Bill has more patience (and demand for the kits) than we impoverished Brits do, and carries a very wide range of Japanese resins in stock.
