Ballard >> I have a sad story. ..... but I would REALLY like to get another copy to replace it! I'll gladly pay a reasonable fee plus shipping. "The Discovery of the Bismarck" by Dr. Robert Ballard << Duane, Have you checked at a Barnes& Noble, Waldens, etc. They often have extra copies of this type of book on their clearance tables. Here in Georgia, there are several bookstores which sell older overstocks for the Cancer Society at low prices. Not one near Atlanta, so I can't help there, but I'll look at B&N friday. The thought of being left alone with this gear is a very tempting one..... Thanks Tim, I for thoroughly enjoyed it Colin Ritchie Aberdeen ,Scotland PS - Tim Perry - as in PP Aeroparts of years gone by? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Gene Larson Subject: Photos on the Web >> I have found some web sites for photos but I am sure that there are lots more. Is there a "master" list somewhere of all the sites? << The NRG has a start on this as well as other sources for model builders. The listings are now approaching 1000. It is difficult to maintain the list, and any inputs for changes and additions would be appreciated. I know the paint scheme but want to know where to put the hatches, doors, latters etc. << Hi there , I was able to use my copy of "Brittish Battleships 1900-1945" by RA Burt(?), unfortunatly long out of print, it has numerious photo's of the ship taken just days before she sailed for the bismark action. I can copy these for you if you want, just e-mail your snail mail address privatly, and I'll see what I can do. I'd urge you go get the GMM PE set for the ship, the improvements in the aircraft cranes are worth the cost of the set alone. The set also has a pretty good set of instructions, pointing out hatch and ladder location, along with additional references. The main differences in POW between the Bismarck action and her loss have to do with the lack of 20MM ainti aircraft guns, (during the May 41 action she didn't have any). And the use of the UP rocket projectors on the turrets and the stern instead of the 2lber Pom Pom's. The UP projectors will be a real pain to scratchbuild, but you might have a word with White Ensign , they produced a set for the Hood update set and their quality is easily equal to Tamiya's original parts. For a small fee they might be persuaded to sell you a set, (Eh Caroline), (you'll need 4, 1 for B Turret, 2 for X and one on the stern) When completed POW really looks pretty bland in her May config, but really quite interesting all the same and remember to go very easy with the weathering , she was a very new ship on what was her first operational sortie, Colin Ritchie ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Felix Bustelo Subject: Discovery of the Bismarck Duane, I you live in the NYC area the Strand Book Store Annex at 95 Fulton Street has two copies of it in the transportation section under ships. Since they carry used books and publisher's overstock, the inventory changes pretty often, so I stop by frequently. I think the copies run about $10 to $15. I brought my copy there about a year or two ago. They may ship the book to you, you can call them at 212 732-6070. If you can't make it or they won't ship it to you, I can pick it up for you and mail it. Please let me know. It is a great book, so I can understand the need to fill that void. Regards, Felix Bustelo ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: SHIP MDLR Subject: Re: Titanic Gold Stripes >> What is the best way to paint the gold stripes on the hull of the Titanic? My friend masked his off and the paint "dribbled" in some spots due to the texture of the hull. I have had a few suggestions, such as getting a gold pinstripe decal from RR models, but havent been able to locate any. Any help would be appreciated since I am in between a rock and a hard place!! << I have an article coming up in the sept. issue of FSM dealing decals. It's called "Super Detailing With Decals". In the article I cover making the razor thin stripes for a Star Trek USS Reliant. It's quite simple. You can purchase a sheet of Superscale decal film and cut it into very fine strips. I needed a custom color for my Reliant so I painted a clear sheet of film and applied it the same way. Just make sure you apply a THIN coat of paint. A thick coat will look just like that, THICK. Rusty White Flagship Models ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Felix Bustelo Subject: Re: Titanic Gold Stripes Dear T.J., I used RR stripe decals for the waterline and tennis court outlines on my 1/600 SS United States. They work great, but present a challenge when it comes to the rounded stern. At the point, I drybrushed white paint. I think that you can find gold stripe decals somewhere for railroad use. The Walthers web-site (WWW.Walthers.com) has dry transfer decals for gold stripes, but no water transfer. You could probably e-mail them a query. When I tackle the Titanic kit, this will probably the method I will use. Good luck Felix Bustelo ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "John L. Bishop" Subject: Re: Titanic Gold Stripe I have yet to attempt my gold stripe (I'm also working on the Academy Kit).... but I believe the best way is to mask it and paint it. For the edges make sure you use something like drafting tape and double check everything before you paint it..... At least you know where the pitfall lies before you try this! All of the decal makers have a plain solid color gold decal sheet. Buy one, put a new blade in your xacto, get out your trusty steel rule, and slice off all the stripes you need. Use a good decal setting solution and you will think they were painted on. Thanks so much for all the responses to my quest for a copy of "Discovery of the Bismarck." I got a lead on a great book finding web site and wanted to pass it along: MX BookFinder at "http://www.mxbf.com/" I checked for "Discovery of the Bismarck" and got 15 listings! They list new and used books along with the prices and descriptions, usually in low to high order. Its a great site for finding those those hard-to-find books we all need. Again, thanks a lot! Duane Fowler ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16) From: "David P. Judy III" Subject: Re: Titanic Gold Stripes Tj You might try this, I use this method for waterlines! Spray an area about three times the width of the stripe you want along the hull where it should be, then when dry seal with clear coat. then using graphic art tape ( you can get this at any office supply store), mask the line you want to keep, then spray the colors of the hull above and below the stripe! Works for me! I have searched the web and asked many people, none can give the proper answer, I did learn that most ELCO PT-Boats were Gray when they left the factory, but MOST were painted an OD Green Color when they arrived in the south pacific for camo reasons. I would be much obliged if someone who has the correct answer please let us ALL know. I am assuming I am not the only one building or trying to build a PT-109 of that era. There is only ONE surviving member of that crew and I WOULDN'T DARE try to contact him. He deserves his retirement in peace. I am attempting to build a MTB Main Base. Any help or info would be appreciated. I already have a few Revell PT-109'S, I'm still looking for more! If you have any, built or un-built I'm interested. I also need as much info as I can get on 1:72 scale parts, supplies, trucks, jeeps, tanks, trailers, cranes, foliage, docks, figures, add-on parts ANYTHING that may be of any help. This is not a rush project, I first have the 1:32 PT-109 to build. I am simply asking for information/help/pieces that will enhance my first diorama project. I do NOT expect perfection, yet I WILL work at it. I expect this project to take quite some time. so feel free to take your time in responding. Best Regards "Underway...Shift Colors!"
