They work great, but present a challenge when it comes to the rounded stern. At the point, I drybrushed white paint. I think that you can find gold stripe decals somewhere for railroad use. The Walthers web-site (WWW.Walthers.com) has dry transfer decals for gold stripes, but no water transfer. You could probably e-mail them a query. When I tackle the Titanic kit, this will probably the method I will use. << Superscale also did gold pinstripes in 4 sizes, and Squadron currently has 2 of them on sale for 99cents! 5-MSPS1324 1/32" Gold Pinstripes 5-MSPS1644 1/64" Gold Pinstripes ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: DKrakow105 Subject: Re: PT109 >> color scheme for the PT-109 while under the Command of Former President Kennedy << Several years ago, I posed the same question to a PT Boat veteran who had seen PT 109. He recalled that it was indeed painted OD green. There was a nice article on the PT 109 as she appeared on her final sortee in a Fine Scale Modeller magazine, I think it was published in the late 1980s. The other two I'll have to pass on since I've got no solid answer for. Anyhow, re your 1/350 Scale bits and pieces, Blue Water Navy do a very high quality range of 1/350 accessories for US Navy subjects (I had to say that otherwise we don't get that bottle of single malt at the US Nationals!!) although we don't stock them in the U.K... go to NAVIS at: http://navismagazine.com and at the bottom of the page there is a link to Lone Gunman Hobbies, where BWN subjects are available at good prices. I don't know if this was a common field modification or not. They also made (don't know if they are easy to still get) deuce-and-a-halfs in 1/72nd. Yours, James D. Gray ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: ALROSS2 Subject: RE: PT 109 color scheme Donovan's book PT 109 describes the boat as being painted a forest green. Given the time period, she was most likely painted NAVY GREEN (5-NG) overall. This is not an olive drab, but a dark green. If you use FLOQUIL's Navy Green, you'll be within the ball park. Thanks again! I just aquired a great reference book from Amazon.com and noticed Tom's ModelWorks has a brass set for the ship? Squadron's latest flyer has the kit for $161.00. Also has anyone built the Arizona from Tom's and if so, what was the quality? Both kits are 1/350 scale. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: Ronnie Hiatt Subject: Re: Titanic's gold stripe Bob Santos wrote: (about Titanic's gold stripe) >> You don't have to find the gold pinstripe decal. All of the decal makers have a plain solid color gold decal sheet. Buy one, put a new blade in your xacto, get out your trusty steel rule, and slice off all the stripes you need. Use a good decal setting solution and you will think they were painted on. << Mr. Santos offered a good solution. I would like to add: Tower Hobbies sells a tool that is made specifically for cutting small stripes from large sheets. You might ask someone from your local R/C airplane club, chances are at least one of them will have this tool and be glad to cut the stripes for you. (the R/C flyers near me are very friendly) although the tool is made to cut monokote etc...believe me it's sharp and accurate enough to cut the stripes from decal sheeting. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: Tim Perry Subject: Computer techologies for model mastering I am glad the notes on Rapid Prototyping were of interest, I will round up some web sites and post them in a couple of days. John Snyder ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: "Stanley Stephen S. Suarez" Subject: Hasegawa 1/700 USS ESSEX I recently purchased a 1/700 kit from Hasegawa of the USS ESSEX. I've never seen a waterline series kit from Hasegawa here in the Philippines before and I was wondering if this is a new Line or a relatively old series that was simply re-issued. The box strangely looks a lot like the boxes of Tamiya's Waterline series with the exception that the instructions are in JAPANESE(all of it). Could anyone point me to a source of PE enhancements for this kit on the NET and probably some on-line reference materials on wartime camo schemes for this ship(on-line sources please, books are hard to find in my neck of the woods). TIA, Stanley ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: "Stanley Stephen S. Suarez" Subject: Prince of Wales information I also have a POW lying around in 1/700 from Tamiya that hasn't been built yet due to the same lack of info that ELBERT has. I would also rather build a BISMARCK vintage POW rather than the SINGAPORE action one(if they differ at all). My question would then be: Is the recomended paint scheme in Tamiya's box and inst. manual the correct scheme for the POW during the Bismarck action? Most of the ones I have come in contact with are not up to scratch. They are to be built in the only scale which does them credit 1:48 it is a good test of my modelling skills, it was the standard that was started by The Admiralty (One of their better moves). Hope to see some of you at the Leasowes Leisure Centre, Quinton, just off the M5 Jn 3, South West of of B'ham.. it is Britain's biggest One-Day show, and is very efficiently organised by IPMS/Birmingham UMS...Do make the effort and come and say "HI" to Dave and I. After considerable discussion with Bob Brown and Brian Fawcett of MDC Re: the 1/350 Sheffield, well.. sorry to say it but Jon Warneke has won the price war on their Sheffield... they CAN offer the cheapest price, especially since prompted to introduce free shipping. The only way that MDC could drop their price is 1. Run the moulds way beyond MDC's acceptable criteria for mould life...resulting in poor quality castings... we would probably start getting returned items as a result (I cannot remember the last time that happened with a WEM kit).. we are aware that all reputable companies (including Toms, IS, BWN, Classic) offer parts replacements, but would you rather not have that inconvenience in the first place? 2. We could use cheaper resin (the stuff we use is NOT the regular P.U., which, all said and done, IS considerably cheaper), but our resin is the only stuff that gives Bob the results we require. Therefore, to maintain the highest standards that you expect from WEM, we have had to fix the price at: WATERLINE WAS £190.00 NOW £150.00 ONE PIECE WAS £230.00 NOW £164.98 WORLDWIDE POST FREE.....AIRMAIL!
