Most of the ones I have come in contact with are not up to scratch. They are to be built in the only scale which does them credit 1:48 it is a good test of my modelling skills, it was the standard that was started by The Admiralty (One of their better moves). << Charlie, You might also want to subscribe to the Seaways Ships in Scale shipmodeling list if your interest runs to 17th & 18th century ships. Problems:- 1. Not much room in the study. 2. Looks like shelves are one possibility. 3. Seems a shame to just leave on the desk Regards Bob Litchfield ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: SHIP MDLR Subject: Photo etch instructions to Texas I'm sorry you were not supplied with the instructions to the Texas detail set. I provided Viking Models with a very nice 3D instruction sheet to be distributed with the detail set. Why it was not provided I do not know. Perhaps (if this was one of the very early kits) they sent it out before I was finished the instructions. They were under a lot of pressure to get the kit to market. I fear they may have sent out some kits incomplete while promising to send the instructions when they were available. I tried to warn them not to do this, and I hope this was not the case. There is no way you can figure where all these parts go without the instructions. They have a website so I would contact them through that. Thier e-mail address is: mailto:viking@eastland.net. If you still get no satisfaction, e-mail me your snail mail address and I'll send you one. I have it and will start as soon as I finish my Heller HMS Victory @ 1/100. But I'd like to talk to someone that has blazed the trail. Someone previously mentioned a possible professional builder/author that may produce an article about his efforts but I lost the note. It is an awesome kit and I must admit I am a bit intimidated by the hull sitting above my monitor staring at me. << It is a rather neat looking kit! I have one on order after seeing it at the IPMS Region 1 Show last week in Sturbridge. Please keep us informed as to your progress, as you may be the TrailBlazer here! Saludos Alberto ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: dhjonespsm@juno.com (Daniel H. Jones) Subject: Prince of Wales plans and details The British quarterly magazine Warship had a four part article by Robert Dumas on the KG V class warships running from Warship number 9 through 12 All four parts are in the Warship bound volumn number 3, which may still be available from the USNIP. The article has small scale drawings of all the ships in the class with an emphasis on the changes that occured - profile drawings of each ship in all variations with plan scrap views showing the changes and locations. This is a very valuable article series for modelers. Used in combination with the general arrangement plans in the Alan Raven books, all questions should be answered. Dan Jones ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Michael Eisenstadt Subject: PoW Madness Folks: Just some additional info for those of you working on PoW kits. There is another reference that I don't believe has been mentioned yet: the four part article "The King George V Class" by Robert Dumas, that appeared in Warships magazine, vol. III some years ago (I don't have any additional info). But it has excellent data for correctly painting all the ships in the class. I would also recommend those working on the Tamiya 1/350 kit to look at the article on the "HMS King George V" the by Robert G. Dick in the May/June 1993 issue of Model Ship Builder magazine, pp. 11-23. He shows the KGV as she appeared during the Bismarck action (same scheme and almost identical appearance as the PoW). His model is done in waterline and mounted on a base with artist's acrylic gel sea base, and is just splendid. There's a lot of info there for PoW modelers, even though the article is about the KGV. For those of you interested in the 1/700 scale Tamiya PoW kit, see the following two articles: "HMS Prince of Wales -- May 1941: A Simple 1:700 Scale Project" by M.W. Williams in the November, 1984 Scale Models International, pp. 594-596. He tells how to modify the PoW kit to portray the ship as she appeared during the Bismarck action. There are detailed scale line drawings included. A very good article. Finally, for those wanting to build the PoW as she appeared late in her career, check out Roger Chesneau, "Tamiya's 1:700 Scale HMS Prince of Wales" in the May 1976 Scale Models, pp. 220-223. Hope this helps, and happy modeling! Yours truly, Mike Eisenstadt ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Sanartjam Subject: Re: HMS Prince of Wales Hi again, I should've pointed out in my earlier post on this that there are plans of the Prince of Wales in Alan Raven's Ensign No. 1 on the King George V Class Battleships and in the third of a four-part article on the King George V Class Battleships by Robert Dumas in Warship No. 11 (that's in bound volume III). I don't know the scale of either plan, but the one in Ensign No. 1 is a bit larger than 1/700 and the one in the Dumas article is smaller than 1/700. I don't know how helpful either would be to someone who wanted a lot of detail on the PoW; I think the main point of each plan was to illustrate the camouflage pattern she wore. There are also plans for her camouflage pattern in Raven & Roberts' British Battleships of WWII and in an article by Dan Jones in PSM. Sorry for the unintended omissions. It has also occurred to me that someone who wants to build the 1/700 Tamiya PoW would want to get a Type 271 radar lantern for it; I think the Tamiya Rodney or Nelson has one (can't remember how good it is), and I think that White Ensign is going to do (or has done) a 1/700 Type 271 radar in resin. What else have I forgotten or missed on this.... Art Nicholson ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
