David Krakow Frankfurt, Germany ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Gene Larson Subject: Model Appraisals John Frohock I would appreciate information on how/who to contact regarding getting official appraisals of models - On the NRG web site we list two known appraisers of ship models. There may be others, but they have not made themselves known to us or others. These two have excellent reputations. I believe that the one in Salem MA is closest to you. He just completed a large job for our local club in our preparation for our annual display at the Mid-Atlantic Maritime Festival. Hi there, I'm looking for spare parts, if any of you all have some. I'm converting a 1/700 Fujimi New Jersey into one of its proposed (but never realized) design changes of the 80's - a VTOL carrier (aft turret removed, and covered with a short flight deck). Nichimo made a 30cm sized model of this, but it was truly awful. So, I need some more 'modern' weapons/systems to go along with it. What I need, in particular (in 1/700 scale, of course, or close to it) in the terms of plastic parts: Mk.140 Harpoon launcher triple torpedo tube 20mm CIWS Mk.45 5-inch gun (the modern 5 inch, like those on the Ticonderogas and Arleigh Burkes) chaff launchers I.e., I need a few parts from a skywave modern USN set. I just don't need all $20 of it. In fact, I don't need skywave in particular. There's a 1/720 Iowa kit out there by Revell or Monogram, that is in modern configuration, I think. It would do. Besides, I could then backdate that kit to the conjecture WW2 Montana! Anyways, if any of you have some bitz laying around you don't want, I'd sure appreciate it. Thanks, John Percy ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Dave Carter Subject: 1/700 Display Hi Bob, 1. Buy a bigger house 2. Alternatively, for 1/700 Scale, a shallow (3-4 inches) deep display cabinet with a glass front is ideal.. we know a guy down in Cornwall who makes these at a very reasonable price.. just make sure that it is VERY securely attached to your wall. Obviously it depends how many models but a cabinet around 26 inches wide with 5 or 6 shelves, each about 5 inches wide can provide a very effective display to enhance viewing and protect your work from dust, cats etc. Cheers Caroline Carter White Ensign Models Hereford, U.K. http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/white.ensign.models ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Dave Carter Subject: Re: HMS Prince of Wales Hi there, Yes, Art Nicholson was correct. We do have a set of 4 x 1/700 Scale radar lanterns available for mid-war onwards RN subjects. These are priced at 1.57 pounds (around $2.50) and are available from both ourselves and Pacific Front Hobbies. The Hasegawa 37mm AT gun w/jeep and the duece-and-a-half truck (2.5 ton truck). They are listed for $6.97 Another kit that is handy for adding a samll change to the PT Boat is the Airfix 40mm Bofor gun. May not be the exact model used for adding some firepower to the PT Boat, but it looks close enough to work and looks good. It may also still be available on the hooby shop shelves or even Squadron mail order. It isn't listed in the May flyer. You can reach squadron mail order at http://www.squadron.com or for email mailto:mailorder@squadron.com. It is 1 of 7 High Endurance Cutters of the Bibb (327') Class. The ships were: Taney (ex-Roger B.) WPG-37 Spencer (ex-John C.) WPG-36 Ingham (ex-Samuel D.) WPG-35 Hamilton (ex-Alexander) WPG-34 (lost in WWII) Duane (ex-William J.) WPG-33 Campbell (ex-George W.) WPG-32 Bibb (ex-George W.) WPG-31 Named for Treasury Secretaries. First name and middle initial dropped soon after completion. Built in 1936/37. Changed from WPG to WHEC in 1966. Just a rough estimate from your 6 3/4 inch size and the actual 327 ft. makes this a 1/581 scale (if my math is correct). A good article on building the Taney/Spencer can be found in "Scratchbuilding Ship Models" Vol 1 No 1 1995 from Challenge Publications. I can send you a photo copy if you send me your address. Rich ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Bill & Kaja Michaels" Subject: USCG Secretary-class Cutters (Bibb, etc.) Eric, First off, I am envious of you-- I'd love to get ahold of one of those old Hawk kits. ( I remember building several of them when I was a youngster...) Bibb was one of 7 Secretary-class cutters built for the USCG. They were named for former Secretaries of the Treasury. They were 327 feet long, and considered fine sailing ships. They were built in the 1935-1937 time frame. The last of the ships to see active service, the Taney, was decommissioned in the early 90's, and is now a museum ship in Baltimore's inner harbor. Over the 50+ years of service, the ships wore a variety of color schemes and fittings: Pre WW2: white, some of the class embarked a float plane. WW2: Navy gray. The ships served as convoy escorts. Hamilton was lost to a German torpedo. Post WW2: Back to USCG white. As the time went on, the ships gradually lost armament, eventually retaining just a single 5" turret forward. Post 1967: In 1967, the USCG moved from the Treasury Department to the newly-created Dept of Transportation. At that time, the ships gained the red hull slash and the words "Coast Guard" on the side of the hull. During the white periods, these ships were white overall, with tan masts and stacks. Decks were teak, with gray for the areas not planked. Ships of the class: Hamilton, Taney, Ingham, Duane, Campbell, Bibb, and Spencer. During WW2,there are a number of different paint schemes carried at one time or another, including a variety of camouflage ones. I recommend looking for a copy of "U.S. Coast Guard Cutters & Craft of World War II", by Robert L. Scheina, published by the Naval Institute Press in 1982. The kit dates I believe to the very early eighties, and comes with decals for birds numbers 1-3, which were finished in gloss white, with gold and blue trim. The bags have been opened, and about half a dozen parts have been neatly trimmed from their sprues, but the kit is complete, with all parts, instructions and decals. Would anyone have any idea how much I could reasonably ask for this kit, as I'm interested in selling it. Thanks! I purchased my by calling Ted Paris at Iron Shipwright and Commander Series Models and reserving a copy. The kit (most of it) arrived shortly after my check cleared. Since I was one of the first to order it, the missing metal pieces and photoetch came a couple of weeks later. I'll find out if I have it all when I start the kit. There was not a combined parts list to check for completeness but it seems right. The one piece resin hull weighs in at almost 4 pounds! Almost 20 " long Two 11"x 4.5" sheets of photoetch Anchor chain Lots of smaller boats and a launch Two tubes of epoxy Lots of metal parts Walnut base Brass pedastal mounts Five pages of instructions (Since I have not started it yet, I cannot comment on the completeness of them) Iron Shipwright had an introductory special for Plastic Ship Modeler subscribers in Dan Jones' 1997/3 issue (Vol. 4, No. 2). I paid $400. Ted said he was only producing 100 kits. Call for availability. USS Lexington and Saratoga 42. HMS Nelson and Rodney 43. Lion Class 44. Lutzow Class 45. Fantasque 46. Leander Class 47. Takao Class 48. Nevada Oklahoma I don't know if any of these were published as profiles, but the centerfold artwork for #'s 41, 42, 43 and 45 was published in a book "The Encyclopedia of the World's Warships" (Hugh Lyon, Salamander/Crescent Books, 1978). This book contains the artwork for all but about two of the Warship Profiles and is worth looking for on the used book market. Also, there were two publications on HMS Belfast. Profile #29 was a normal format profile of the ship, but the "Warship Special" was an expanded hardcover book. There were also three hardcover anthologies published. Volume 1 contained #'s 1-12, Volume 2 contained #'s 13-24 and Volume 3 contained #'s 25-30.
