It is crammed full of very good close up photographs with 8 pages of colour in the centre. This book is a must must if you are building any of these ships! Terry Howlett ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: ALROSS2 Subject: Re: SOVREMENNYY The SOVREMENNYY class DDGs measure 156.37m x 17.19m x 5.99m, displace 7940 tons. At about 516', they're about 90' shorter than a BROOKLYN class CL.. There are some good photos and lots of information in the current issue of Combat Fleets of the World 1998-1999, as well as in earlier issues. Your local library probably has a copy. It is published by the US Naval Institute Press and retails for about $140. Al Ross ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Jeff Herne" Subject: Photos You can order pics from the National Archives, they have a website: http://www.nara.gov/ Prices are expensive, they range from $12-$15 per photo. The best way to do it: if you're ever in the College Park, MD, area, visit, and scan the pics with a laptop and scanner. They'll let you scan till your heart's content. That's how the majority of my photos in my Fletcher book were obtained. In my case, 138 photos for a book at $12-$15 apiece makes writing it cost prohibitive! You can call the Archives and they'll Xerox pics for you, within reason, for a small fee. They don't really do justice though. For dockyard pics of US warships, they'll be located in the 19-LCM series, for in-action and general shots, they're in the 80-G series. Hope this helps... Dragon 1/700 "Russian Sovremenny Class Destroyer" kit, simply because it is such a cool looking ship! I know nothing about Modern Russian Navy, let alone specific ships. Man, this sucker is BIG! Must be close to the size of a WW2 CL. The instructions say absolutely nothing about the ship, no length, displacement, armament, nothing. Just that two ships are opted - 715 "Bystry"; and 434 "Besstrashny". It looks at first glance like a really nice kit, very finely done. Can anybody fill me in about this class? Are there any photo refs? Color? << Ken, That is the Skywave that has been re-released under the Dragon label. It is a very nice kit. Fortunatley, the ships were extensively photographed around five years ago during the port visits to the US. Concord puts out an excellent book called: Slava, Udaloy, and Sovremenny by Steven Zaloga #1034. This book is filled with pictures (B&W and color) with the modeler in mind. Also, check out your local library for specs from Janes or Combat Fleets of the World put out by USNI. If that fails E-mail me and I will be glad to give you the info. Bob Steinbrunn Minneapolis ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Steve Belanger" Subject: USS Texas 5" mounts and Alabama and more I have pictures posted on the internet on the Texas (about 60) but some are dark from a bad bright sun. A few are of the 5" mounts, but I'm sure "PulligS" could pick up much more pics than I can since he right there. If anyone can't reach the Texas and wants a walkthrough (interior as well as exterior) then check out my page - http://members.xoom.com/Wespe/ Also there is about 80 pics of the Alabama and about 60 for the North Carolina. Massachusetts isn't posted yet though. I just went down there again yesterday and took more so they'll be up in a few days. I also went to see USS Salem for the first time, and initially from the outside it didn't look to good. Kind of rusty and lots of peeling paint. Anyway the interior wasn't that bad though, I was actually surprised from it after seeing the outside. I was interested in the turret interior since it was different than the usual battleship ones, but you could only go into the gun house. Another big thing I liked at Salem is that you could actually walk in almost every room. Not too many plexi-glass or wire mesh covered doorways to pear into the room from. The CIC was the most impressive. Everything was placed loosely everywhere (headphones, helmets, books, etc.) and you could walk right through it - no maze of plexiglas here! I hope they don't change that aspect of it, but I'm sure some idiots are going to touch and destroy everything so they will ruin it for everyone. Also most of the hatchways below decks are also open with just a "No admittance" running across it and completely dark down there also. So hopefully one day you can go everywhere, with no bolted/welded/locked hatchways like the others. Enough rambling! Batykefer, Jr." Subject: (LHA-1) USS Tarawa Drawings Dear Modelers, I am building a 1/350th scale model of the USS Tarawa (LHA-1). I'm looking for hull lines, overall profiles, well deck, hanger deck and vehicle deck drawings since the 1/700th scale DML kit is not very acurate. I have checked with various US Navy sources as they sent me on a phone journey ending up at the Ingalls Shipyard. Ingalls then refered me back to the US Navy! I'm at a loss... Does anyone know how to get the information I need?
