I'm looking for every kind of information about USS Enterprise (CV-6) between Aug'44-Jan'45: Photos, plans, AA (types, number and position in the vessel), aircrafts (number, camouflages, etc.), CAMOUFLAGE pattern and colours in that period, radars, gun directors, additional blisters and armour, etc. If anybody knows any information or web site or books, plese let me know. I've just have some of the information asked but will be happy to recieve any help. All this info is for a project with the 1/700 Tamiya kit. Thank you for all the attention, Cataldo Torelli P.D. Apologise if my English is not very good. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Bruce Ross-QBR000 Subject: Re: displaying model ships I wanted to endorse Lars suggestion regarding displaying your ship models >> The best way to go about finding a case for a ship model (or for any other model that you want cased) is to purchase the Plexiglas based on dimensions that you think are okay. I prefer two inches' space all around and one inch of space above the highest point on the model. The yellow pagesshould have many plastics manufacturers that will fabricate your case. << I have a local plastic vendor that I can purchase sheet plastic from, and he will even cut it to the specified dimensions for me. Building your own cases is not a skill that is difficult to master. I started by getting my hands on an article that appeared in Fine Scale Modeler a few years back on making your own case. The condensed version is that you start sanding with a course grade of wet & dry sandpaper and work your way to a fine grade. It doesn't really take long to reach a good finish. Then finish up with a polishing using automobile polish. I went down to the local home repair store (where I could have stock!!!) and got myself some corner clamps, these clamps, the plastic and some Tenex glue and you're there. I recently created a case for a 1/144 Fletcher DD and the total bill only ran me about $30 US. The base you can go with Lar' fine suggestion, I used a router and made my own, she is shown sitting on drydock keel blocks. Not a hard process just a few hours of enjoyable work. And its history? << You'll have to contact the Ufficio Storico della Marina in Rome. Here's the address: Ufficio Storico della Marina Militare Via dell'Acqua Traversa, 151 00135 Roma - Italy tel. (06) 33184463 fax (06) 33184461 Don't be surprised if they are VERY SLOW in replying you inquiry. >> Is there any plastic (or resin) kit of it? << Nope. But since you're talking about a pretty "simmetrical" ship you'd only have to scratchbuild one side of the bow, then you mirror-copy it and you have half a ship, then you make a copy of the whole thing and you have the complete ship. Then with a file/sandpaper you'll only have to shape the bow and stern.(Minor job, they're both almost vertical.) >> Its main guns were of 17.7 or 17.9 in caliber? << 4x450 mm. - you do the math :-) The secondary armament consisted in 3x120mm. 2x75mm. 8x57mm. 22x37mm. and 3 TT Designed by famous naval architect Benedetto brin and completed in 1880 (Duilio) and 1882 (Dandolo), these ships displaced respectively 11.138 andf 12,265 tons, dimensions (in meters) was 109.2x19.7x8.8. The 7710shp engine gave them a max spedd of about 15 kts. with a cruise speed range of 3,760 nm. The Duilio and her near sister Dandolo were the most powerful battleships of their age. Dandolo was modernized in 1894 and refitted with 4x254mm. and 7x152mm. I am building the Skywave MIAMI and CLEVELAND 1/700 kits and I want to add a thin styrene sheet on the sides of the hull to represent the armor belt. What I need is the longitudinal location of the belt on the hull. Distance from bow and stern (waterline distance) will meet my needs. I ordered a plan of the MIAMI, but - alas - the belt was not shown. Any help would be appreciated. On a different subject, I would like to thank Larry Ouellette for the update on preservation efforts of USS SALEM (CA-139). I have visited the ship a number of times, the most recent being this past weekend. The absence of preservation work on the hull was very obvious - as was the great work going on above the main deck. The flaking paint disappointed this old career Navy man, but having the environmental reasons discussed in SMML26/5/98VOL191 helped me understand the problem. I hope she gets drydocked soon so the hull can look as good as the rest of the ship. I can't help but wonder who will get into drydock first - USS MASSACHUSETTS (BB-59) whose bottom badly needs maintenance or the USS SALEM. I had already checked with the Floating Drydock and they do not have any information on the Tarawa. Are there other sources you may know about for drawings of the ship? (Even if they are in the US Navy. << Ralph, Sorry, I can't help you with the Tarawa plans but if you can find out which shipyard built it they can help you out. Try asking over the web which shipyard built it. I know for a fact that Newport News Shipyard has a website. Maybe they do as well. Good luck. There is a model company banner called Regia Marina. They deal strictly in Italian warships. The Duilo wasn't in thier catalogue but they may be a good place to start looking. You can e-mail them from there. The remnants of the SAN FRANCISCO are in a park at Land's End near the Cliff House in San Francisco. John Snyder Sacramento, Calif. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Sanartjam Subject: Re: Italian Duilio 1880 I definitely had to look this one up.... According to Paul Silverstone's Capital Ships of the World, the Duilio had four 450mm guns, which I think would be equivalent to 17.7 inches. There are no plans in the Silverstone book, but it does have a photograph of her and a very, very brief history. I'm not aware of any models of the Duilio. Hope this helps. Art Nicholson ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: RCClem Subject: Re: Italian Duilio; 1876 Nuno J. V. Rubim requested info on the early Italian steel battleship Duilio. This battleship was designed by Benedetto Brin during the early 1870's, a period of accelerated innovation. It was launched in 1876 and started a mini-arms race. It carried 2 450 mm (17.7 in.) in 2 single gun turrets. These muzzle loading guns weighed 100 tons each and could not be fired simultaneously, for fear of shaking the ship apart. The ship displaced 12,000 tons and sported armour up to 560 mm (22 inches) thick. She was about 358 ft long. I am not aware of a plastic or resin kit. However, Model Fan (exModelcard) makes a 1/200 scale model out of paper/card stock. ( 21.5" long; $20.95 ) Contact Paper Models International in Beaverton, Oregon (503) 646-4289. These models are quite detailed and could provide a real challenge to the average modeler.
