As far as topside, there would be a number of lookouts stationed around the ship, actual number would likely have been at the direction of the Captain. You could probably show at least 4-6 officers on the bridge ( OOD, JOOD, CO, Torpedoe officer, Comm O, etc). Manning of certain stations during an air action (ie: the searchlights) would have been set to the Captain's preference. Not real sure about the D.C.'s Should be interesting to hear all the feed back on this one. For those of you making your own display cases, here's a little tip for getting a nice clean edge on the Perspex/Plexiglass sheets that my old school woodwork teacher taught. After sanding the edges with progressively finer grades of wet and dry paper, take a small piece of steel-wool, wrap it around your finger tip and rub on a bar of ordinary soap (NO water!) Rub along the edge of the perspex, in the longitudinal direction only, and after a liitle effort you should get a nicely polished edge. (To the English out there - Brillo pads may work, I've never tried them though!) Regards, Chris ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Nuno J. V. Rubim" Subject: DUILIO Thank to all who answered my question. After my posting I discovered that Landstrom's book "The Ship" has a very good drawing of the Duilio/Dandolo (I have the portuguese language edition),with some data. I also ordered today, from Marcle Models,UK ,a Modelcard 1:200 scale cardstock model of the Duilio. Going on with USS Enterprise in the period Aug'44-Jan'45 I'm centered today in AA weapons: number, position, etc. of the 20 mm guns and Bofors 40 mm twins and quads. The kit has 1.1" guns instead the late Bofors, so, does any manufacturer make those AA guns in 1/700 (resin, photoetched, etc.)? I keep the search of info about The Big E. Any help is welcome. Cataldo Torelli ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Hess1962@aol.com Subject: Re: 2400 GHQ Congratulations on your discovery of GHQ models...one of the best-kept secrets in the (small) modelling world. Their castings are first-class (and some of us have been trying to persuade them to enter the 1200/1250 world). I've done over 150, both modern and WWI and II...and only left the scale because I (they?) ran out of ships that interested me. You'll need good small files, CA glue, fine (600) sandpaper, and magnifying glass(es). After cleaning the castings (very little required with GHQ kits), prime with Testors spray (grey or white, depending on the effect you want). Camouflage painting is challenging and adds to their visual appeal: I use PollyS acryllic naval colors. Keep your colors lighter than normal, due to the scale effect. I follow Hreachmark's suggestion and bake each coat before applying another. Place ship on a thin piece of plywood and bake it in a conventional oven at 200 degrees for about 20 minutes. Let cool before applying another coat. For extra detail, Dave Ligman of SeaBat Replicas in Madison WI makes great decals, including hull numbers in various styles and for various ships and superb flight deck decals for U.S. and IJN WW II carriers. I could go on and on about these neat little ships, but brevity is the soul of something or other so just...enjoy! Dave Hess Kalamazoo MI USA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Ives100@aol.com Subject: Re: USS Salem & USS Massachusetts My understanding is that the Balao class submarine, USS Lionfish (SS 298), is in desperate need of repairs also. There are VERY few diesel submarines from WWII around, and even fewer that did not get the extensive postwar GUPPY conversion (streamlined conning towers, removal of guns, bow reconfiguration) that drastically alter their appearance from WWII fit. I spoke with one individual (ex-submariner) who worked with the Lionfish, and he felt it might not even be possible to drydock her without hull collapse. The submarines were key elements in the US victory in the Pacific theatre, and we should try to preserve them as long possible. Are there plans that anyone is aware of to address this deterioration?
