It has a handful photos and painting information about Hornet and other Essex class carriers. Some show the hangar doors. I hope this helps. I can check this tonight when I get home I'd be happy to photocopy these and send them on to you if they are of any use. They were quite detailed as I recall, drawn by an R.A.Sweet. In a similar vein didn't FSM publish catapult drawings in 1987. Though I think this was a 90' catapult of the type fitted to Cruisers. Scale and manufacturer are not critical. Thanks. Chip Barber ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: DKrakow105@aol.com Subject: Yamato and Skulski >> I had a repressed memory flashback of a kit I worked on, and off, and on, all of last year and now sits in its resting place high in the rafters. It remains unfinished. It's a Yamato, in 1:350 scale, but not just any Yamato, but an "authentic" Lifelike model from God only knows when or where. Some tell me that it's an old Pyro reissue, others claim it is Otaki in origin. No one knows for sure. << Oh no, don't remind me of the "Life Like" Yamato! What a waste of plastic, and what audacity to package it under a label that said "Life Like" and "Authentic". My friend bought the kit at a flea market in NYC. At $2.00, he overpaid. Remembering that 'ol Dave owed him a favor, it became my sorry task to assemble the hideous monstrosity into something that looked like the Yamato. The instruction sheet was missing! I was traumatized by those chunky brittle plastic parts in blue grey plastic, the huge gaps, the broken and missing pieces! That kit is not the Yamato, it is the Yamato's Revenge. I finished the beast as best I could and handed it over to my friend without looking back as he walked away with it. When I am at his house, I avert my eyes not to see it. If I had been smart, I would have trashed it and bought the Tamiya kit. I spent about the same on putty and aspirin anyway. If anyone sees another one at a flea market or garage sale, just walk away and don't make any sudden movements, trust me. On another note, I met Jan Skulski, the author of the Yamato anatomy. He is not only a superb draftsman and researcher, but a modelbuilder par-excellance. I visited him at his modest apartment in Krakow, Poland in 1991 and beheld his minute 1:1000 scale ships. They must be seen to be believed. His carrier model was mind-boggling. For example, the carrier planes have clear canopies with frame details, bombs and torpedoes are slung under the wings, wheels, flaps, arrestor hooks all there, even the engines have cylinders under the cowels! Some of his work was published in Scale Ship Modeller. Each model is executed with incredible skill and precision, and all scratchbuilt with only the most basic tools and materials, all in 1:000 scale! In response to my constant questioning, Skulski explained and diagramed his techniques to me, all very simple and clever. Skulski is one of the truly grand people of our hobby and I learned more about modelbuilding from him in a few hours than I did in the previous ten years. I've been looking for any scale drawing for a long time. Does anyone know of a source to get these plans. ANY help would be greatly appreciated. << There's a minimal set of line drawings in Pavlov's book on Soviet warships, 1945-1995. They do show hull sections. Apparently, there's some weird kind of keel on her. The drawing looks awfully strange in places. Keep in mind that Pavlov et. al. are amateurs, and they didn't have access to official data. David R. Pacific Front Hobbies once stocked Bang Modelling kits from Japan... these were resin kits although we never got to see the quality. Watch this space for our very own 1/700 Scale production of Aquitania.. resin and etched brass, so it will be an expensive, albeit high quality, limited run production. Tirado K" Subject: USS Indianapolis, May 1944 I am finishing a 1/700 model of the USS Indianapolis CA-35, based in the excellent old Mathbox hull, a complete rebuilt superestructure and details from different origins. I worked based in the very useful Warship pictorial nr.1 published by Classic Warships Publications with a collection of very fine photos. I am building the lady as she looks in May 1944, with Measure 32/7D, the dazzle camouflage, and now I am painting the basic color before I put all the photoetched. Now the problem/question: I am not shure about the 5 In. gun director and radar. Also seems that the aft one is different from the other.., as I can see in the photos I have, probably is the same director with a different arrange for the radar. Somebody can tell me please: - what mk. number are both gun directors ? - what radar is installed in each gun director ? Also I need a good drawing or something useful for doing a scratchbuild job, maybe somebody knows a site in the web where I can found a good drawing of this equipment. Again, thanks a lot for the help, and thanks Greg for the list. best regards Tomas ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: "Peter Berghs" Subject: Re: Corvette One of the local hobby shops here in Calgary have one for sale (I think).
