Also check the other article on lead in Britannia fittings. Go to the last listing on the main page and click on it: "Lead Corrosion In Exhibition Ship Models by Dana Wegner, Curator of Models, United States Navy." Please be patient. The graphics take a short time to load, but it is well worth seeing the excellent scanning performed by the USN. In fact, click on the enlargement cue at the end of each photo credit and see a 2x2 screen picture. The lead sickness on the first two photos (in color) should convince any non-believer. I was recently told that it was removed from the Prinz Eugen just after the war. True or False?? Thanks, David Krakow Frankfurt, Germany ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Mike Settle Subject: Re: Japanese Ships and References >> Now my problem. I've got tons (literally I think) of Japanese Aircraft reference, but almost no Japanese Ship references. My question is, are they out there? What's still available? What should I put on my "must have" list for references? I'd appreciate all help in reforming this aircraft modeler! << Dave, For a start, check out the Nihon Kaigun web page: http://www.skypoint.com/members/jbp/kaigun.htm It has a lot of good info on the ships and men of the IJN. Mike Settle ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Graham Holmes Subject: Russian Torpedo Boat Yes, thanks Caroline, the boat I saw is exactly what you describe. I thought WWI because of antiquated appearance, but I had no references to check. It is a nice kit, isn't it? Graham Holmes ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: thunder.bearr@juno.com (Robert Vancel) Subject: "New" Yamato Since we're on the subject, I recently obtained an old Fujimi Catalog (1996 I think) that showed a kit of what appeared to be a "modernized" Yamato. It seemed to have had its aft turrets removed and replaced with missle launchers. Also, the familiar smokestack had been replaced with exhausts along the deck. I will see if I can locate it in the massive collection of catalogs, magazines, dried glue tubes and boxes of spent sprue and get some more info. I, too, was introduced to the Yamato through the Japanese series, Star Blazers. I scratchbuilt a 1/450 one a couple of years back because I couldn't find one in a large enough scale for me (or at the price I wanted to pay). I competed in several Region 3 events with it and did quite well with it. I sold the model to a rabid collector (no kidding, he was foaming at the mouth over it) at a toy and doll show here in Knoxville about two years ago. I have been toying with the idea of maybe building another one using the Tamiya kit as a basis. Robert ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Douglas Martin" Subject: New 1/700 Tamiya Yamato OK Folks, Who has got a kit of this upgrade, whats its box reference number and who is selling them!! Do we get options for the April 1945 outfit of AA weapona, and is Musashi getting a reworking? Reveal all! Thanks, Douglas (Scotland) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Steve Sobieralski Subject: Re: De Zeven Provincien Info >> Hello. My first post... I'm interested in building a model of the Dutch cruiser Eendracht or her sister ship De Zeven Provincien as they were originally designed in 1939. They were both completed postwar to a considerably modified design and renamed De Zeven Provincien and De Ruyter respectively. I've found plenty of material on them as completed but only a couple of fairly rough line drawings in Jane's and in Whitley's Cruisers of WW2 as designed. I would appreciate any suggestions you might have regarding possible sources of more detailed plans or illustrations for the two ships as designed. << Jeffrey: I happened to be looking through some old issues of WARSHIP INTERNATIONAL this weekend and found a fairly comprehensive article regarding these ships. The issue is No. 4, 1976 and the article includes copies of plans of the ships as originally designed in 1939. The plans include an inboard profile and plans of all decks above the first weatherdeck. The drawings are clear and well detailed, showing interior compartment layouts including furniture. Scale of the drawings is not given but it is a triple page fold -out and they appear to be about 1/350. There are no hull lines or outboard sections included in the article. The drawings are credited "Courtesy of Historical Section Naval Staff Royal Netherlands Navy. From Arthur Davidson Baker III Collection." The author of the article was L. L. von Munching, a retired Dutch naval officer who was at that time with the Naval Historical Section at the Hague. I would imagine that you could contact the Royal Netherlans Navy and get these drawings and any others they might have. I don't think that back issues of WI are available that far back, but if you want to email me your address, I'll be happy to send you some xerox copies of these plans. Steve Sobieralski (steves@ggi.com) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: robin Subject: Nagato info wanted Hi Every one, Has anyone got any info about a 1:400 Battleship Nagato by OTAKI? I have heard around the net that there is one, whats the availability & price like? also has anyone got any pictures of what she looks like now on the bottom of bikini atoll? Also, what models are about of the Prinz Eugen? & what does she look like now? Cheers & 73's for now, ordrazz ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Martin.Lamb@dtf.vic.gov.au Subject: Re: Academy vs. Tamiya Bismark and Tirpitz The Tamiya catalogue has pictures of the two ships so you can easily compare them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: Sanartjam@aol.com Subject: Re: Nichimo & Heller Kits Hi All, This is a bit overdue, but someone had asked about some articles by Dennis Moore on a Nichimo 1/500 Japanese cruiser, and I think that would be the articles called "H.I.J.M.S. Myoko" in Model Ship Builder Nos. 54 (July/August 1988) and 55 (September/October 1988). Reprints of the articles should be available from Model Ship Builder. The Myoko built into a very impressive model. I think Nichimo has done eight Japanese heavy cruisers in 1/500 scale, but it seems that I've heard or read somewhere that the quality of its 1/500 heavy cruiser kits is a bit uneven; does anyone know which ones are good and which ones aren't so good? It's amazing that so many of the old Nichimo and Heller kits are so good, and many can be built into great models, but you still really have to do your research, like the Listmember who recently pointed out the problems with the Heller 1/400 King George V. To take another example, not too long ago Paolo Pizzi pointed out that the Nichimo 1/500 Shokaku has catapults it shouldn't have. Speaking of Nichimo kits, has anyone ever seen any articles on building the 1/200 Akitsuki kit? A friend of mine built it into one of the most impressive models I've ever seen, but I'd like to see if there have been any articles on doing this. And finally, Greg, has your Yamato arrived yet? The suspense is killing us! Good luck! Art Nicholson ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: Michael Eisenstadt Subject: Hobby Shops in Germany Folks: I will be travelling to Germany on business in early July and will be visiting Munich, Bonn, Hamburg, and perhaps Berlin. Could anyone recommend any hobby shops in any of these towns that stock 1/700 scale resin ship kits (particularly Doc Modell and B-Resina). Also, are there any naval or maritime museums that are "must sees" for naval enthusiasts? Thanks! Yours truly, Mike Eisenstadt ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: Les Pickstock (Les Pickstock) Subject: Re: H.M.S. ARK ROYAL The "ARK" sank 30 miles off Gibralter in 600 fathoms, according to most references, with the loss of only one hand. She had been under tow, so she was torpeoed some where else. She probably rolled as she was listing heavily to Port just before sinking. She took at least four aircraft with her as they were parked on her deck at the time (Swordfish). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: "Robert R.M. de Vlam" Subject: hand brush qualities of acrylic paints Hi, As the (hobby) producer of scale 1:1250 waterline shipmodels, I have tried out Pactra, Humbrol and Accuflex acrylic paints. The spray coverage of these brands is acceptable but the brush coverage of most is unsatisfactory. Too many coats and loss of detail. I am interested in your comment, whereby it must be remembered, that availability in Holland, directly or indirectly, is a must. Robert DeVlam, "Noordzee" Models, Holland. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: Lee Francis Wilhelmsen Subject: 1/350 scale vs. 1/400 scale Hi all. I have chosen to only model in 1/350 scale. Still, I have seen many good 1/400 subjects and I was therefore wondering how much size difference is noticable between models from these two scales. I have read that many models are manufactured in a slightly wrong scale to what the box cover states (i.e. Revell Emden) Comparing the Heller 1/400 Hood and the WEM 1/350 Hood. Is the WEM model larger or is this un-noticable? Lee Francis Wilhelmsen Stavanger, Norway ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
