I do not personally believe that these scales can be modelled together.. there may be others out there of course who differ.. Even on small subjects like our proposed line of 1/350 aircraft, 1/400 Scale builders will not, it seems, use these in their ship models (e.g. Heller Illustrious), as the scale difference is very noticeable. That's why L.P. has expanded his excellent 1/400 Scale line of photoetched accessories to cater specifically for the 1/400 Scale modeller. Typical of the discrepancy is the following scaling of Hood: 1/400 25.8 inches 1/350 29.5 inches Almost 4 inches overall length and the same proportions in height and width... Cheers Caroline C. Is the WEM model larger or is this unoticable? << Hi there, I've played around with this topic a bit in the past, so here's my 2p worth. 400th is approx 12.2% smaller than 350th, as a comparison, Hood is approx. 860 feet, in 350th this is 29.5 inched, ( the size of my WE Hood), whereas in 400th the ship scales out to 25.8", 3.7" smaller. So to answer your question, yes there is a difference, and a pretty noticeable one. Whether this 12% difference means the ships are going to be noticeably different, enough to make you stick to one scale of another is really up to yourself. I bought the Heller Prince Eugen, (OK can't spell!), put beside the Tamiya Bismarck it look's "right", not that different, and close enough I guess to be acceptable. I'd love a full 350th fleet, but until someone produces the Prince, and others in 350th, (Yup I know Iron Shipwrights are working on one), I'll stick to the much cheaper , and almost as nice Heller kit. Oh as for Hood's , save , scrimp, and try to afford the WE Hood, it'll be worth it! What I would like to do, is complete her as she appeared in the late 30's. What I need are biplane aircraft. I have two from the Arizona kit that I don't plan on using, and I think they can be modified to look "like" a T4M, but I would really like to fill the flight deck. Does anyone know of a source of suitable aircraft in this scale, about 1/480? Any other comments on appearance, or stories about building this kit would also be appreciated. Thanks, Mark Seitz ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Stanley Stephen S. The Hull looks a lot sleeker than what we have formerly seen from Tamiya and the Main Guns no longer elevate, opting instead for the better looking effect of fixed guns with the canvas covers. >> Do we get options for the April 1945 outfit of AA weapona, and is Musashi getting a reworking? << The Mushashi is getting the re-working too, although I am not sure about the AA refit. I am still eagerly awaiting delivery of my kit which I hope will arrive here sooner since I am a bit closer to Japan (geographically) than the rest of you guys. Now, if only someone would give me recommendations regarding which among the several PE offerings from various manufacturers should accompany my "NEW" Yamato in 1/700...... Great work on the "Who's who" Greg! Can't wait till the next one. Stanley Stephen S. Where are the good hobby stores? The prevailing mentality here is very much anti-military so you just don't find as many naval ship or scale model enthusiasts here relative to the States or the UK. By and large, German modelbuilders and hobby stores tend to be strong on railroad subjects and weak on military subjects. But there are always exceptions. My suggestion would be to pick up a copy of "Modell Fan" magazine. Most large newstands carry it. There's a listing of hobby shops in Germany by location. As for the shops in the Frankfurt area, forget them. For naval museums, take a look at the model ships at the Deutsches Museum in Munich, and if you have time, take a ride up to Kiel and walk through U995 at Laboe. Its right on the beach. Dave Krakow ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: DKrakow105@aol.com Subject: Re: Brushing paints >> As the (hobby) producer of scale 1:1250 waterline shipmodels, I have tried out Pactra, Humbrol and Accuflex acrylic paints. The spray coverage of these brands is acceptable but the brush coverage of most is unsatisfactory. << I have always found Humbrol to have superb hand-brush coverage, perhaps you are doing something wrong. Mix the paint thoroughly, and dip the brush in the tin, don't use the stuff on the lid, just wipe that off with a rag. Also make sure your tins are tightly sealed, clean the rims and use a hammer to shut them. Work quickly and don't let the paint dry out on the brush. When the brush starts to feel thick, clean it in thinner and start again. Lots of people swear by PollyS for hand-brushing but I don't like it at all and have much better results with Humbrol. One trick you can use with most paints in order to get ultra-fine coverage is to filter out the heavy pigment particles. Easier done than said-- stir up the paint then wait about an hour or two before opening the jar, (depends on the brand). Let the jar sit undisturbed on a level surface. This will cause the larger, heavier particles of paint pigment to settle to the bottom, while the finer particles remain in fluid suspention. Take your paint from the top and don't stir up the bottom. This may cause your coat to be a bit glossier, but it will be smoother and won't obscure minute detail. The gloss can be toned down later with dullcoat. I was recently told that it was removed from the Prinz Eugen just after the war. True or False?? << I'm not certain of the origin of the acquisition of the Smithsonian's Ar-196, but for many years it sat out in the open, along with 12 or more aircraft, in static display at Willow Grove Naval Air Station, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. Willow Grove is about 30 miles north of Philadelphia, and many of the display aircraft there were owned by the Smithsonian who had eventual plans to restore them. The A6M5 Reisen (Zero) and P-80R were two others which disappeared from Willow Grove and found their way to Washington. For many years, as a young lad, I'd often ride my bike to the NAS and press my nose against the fence in front of the line of display aircraft, just looking and dreaming....... I can only assume that they used the same molds for sister ships. Similarly, I liked the Hyuga & Ise, but the Nagato & Mutsu weren't that great. Even so, I did the work to fix the problems with the Nagato. It's so rare to find anything in 1/500 these days. Folks: The Hobby Link Japan site lists Yamato as it sailed in April '45, and Musashi as constructed. Why, oh why, is Musashi never show or given the option on Oct '44 in 1/700? From the pics at HLJ, there is considerable difference in the bow area, where else I cant see, Yamato has the 5? triple 25mm mounts on the deck edge amidships in this kit. A new Shinano to follow, and to think I've an old type Musashi and Shinano still unbuilt! Also noticed the Kitakami and Oi cruisers by PitRoad, both 'unavailable', damn, damn, damn. Well. I'm off to ruin the UK import stats again, thanks Stanley! Douglas (Scotland) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 17) From: Mapweasel@aol.com Subject: Re: Prinz Eugen There have been several Eugans out on the market. Revell Germany has one in 1/720. I heard that its an old Mathchbox kit, but as I haven't seen one myself I cant say anything on the quality. One of the Big Three( Tamiya, Hasegawa, Fujimi) makes one in 1/700, but I'm not sure which. Airfix has one in 1/600 and is a nice kit but goes in and of production frequently. It would be nice to see one in 1/350, but its hard enough to find Kriegsmarine ships in 1/700(any manufacturer out there listening?). As to how she looks now, I would imagine very rusty. After suffering little damage from the Bikini A-bomb tests, her irradiated hull was towed to the Kwajalein Atoll. While there, she capsized to starboard from leaks that developed in her joints. Otherwise, she is very much intact. Brian Mowery ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 18) From: thunder.bearr@juno.com (Robert Vancel) Subject: Re: Modernized Yamato >> Since we're on the subject, I recently obtained an old Fujimi Catalog (1996 I think) that showed a kit of what appeared to be a "modernized" Yamato. It seemed to have had its aft turrets removed and replaced with missle launchers. Also, the familiar smokestack had been replaced with exhausts along the deck. I will see if I can locate it in the massive collection of catalogs, magazines, dried glue tubes and boxes of spent sprue and get some more info. << Oops. Forgot what my original train of thought was (guess that happens to model railroaders) on the "modernized" Yamato. This kit appeared to be what the ship might look like today if she had still been afloat and upgraded. Also, more digging in my vault showed me it was an Aoshima catalog. Anyone have any info on this? Am I even remotely close with my guess? My Japanese is rusty (as far as Kata Kana goes).
