So for your sake, and the sake of all those out there still uninfected, please read on. I to suffered from this disease many, many years ago, but building large quantities of US carrier aircraft cured me of it, I suggest the same cure. Just build a few Avenger's, Dauntless and the odd Hellcat, and after a few weeks this strange obsession starts to fade away..... There are the odd recurrences of it, and yes I still have "Tora, Tora Tora" on video somewhere, along with "Midway". However a quick viewing of "The Final Countdown" soon breaks the mood, (watching F-14's splash Zero's, cool!) So go book your self in as a patient to Doc AM's clinic, and start an intensive course of 48th ship sinking aircraft, and all will be well again, eventually. OK the Yamato was the biggest, maybe the most attractive capital ship ever built, mounting the largest guns, and under way was a magnificent site, powerful ,stately , shrugging off attacks like fly's, OH No .... Help, I slipping, get me a TBM immediately..... {End Humour Mode } I wish I had the space, and dedication to take on the 200th scale beast, keep us up to date on the project, and please don't take offence at the above! PS: The Scots are playing in Bordeaux to-day, and the sports reporters last night were broadcasting from in their words, "a preserved French battleship" moored in Bordeaux itself, anyone know what it might be? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Greg Lee (Listmaster - SMML) Subject: Re: Yamatoholica ITS TO LATE FOR ME - YOU MUST GO ON WITHOUT ME!!!!!!!!!!!!! THERE"S NO HOPE FOR ME NOW - SAVE YOURSELF'S!!!!!!!!!!!!! AAARRRGGGGHHH!!!!! Where's the listmaster? (Eaten by Yamatosaurus Rex I expect) So you don't think its a good idea to change the list from SMML to YMML? I just dug out an unbuilt Tamiya 1/350 Yamato from the "To Build" cupboard just to tide me over until the big girl gets here. (In amongst the 1/700 Waterline Y, and 1/350 Musashi:-) You're right, it is a very consuming subject, kinda makes me feel like Grunting - ARGH ARGH ARGH! More Power! Bigger Guns! Argh Argh Argh! You think this post is a pathetic waste of your valuable RAM, wait until the kit arrives:-) Sorry to bore you - but after all, I am the Listmaster:-)))))))) Greg (Listmaster - SMML) P.S. I am not sure what the " preserved French battleship" is, but I am sure it would have been no match for the Yamato. P.S.S. Did I mention I ordered the Nichimo 1/200 Battleship Yamato? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: James Corley > After Dr. Ballards anouncement that he found the Yorktown, I had to add the Revell kit to the ever growing list of modelling subjects. What I would like to do, is complete her as she appeared in the late 30's. What I need are biplane aircraft. I have two from the Arizona kit that I don't plan on using, and I think they can be modified to look "like" a T4M, but I would really like to fill the flight deck. Does anyone know of a source of suitable aircraft in this scale, about 1/480? << If you are doing YORK, dont worry about the T4M, they were gone by the time YORK got airplanes. Here is her 1937 **PRECOMMISSIONING** airwing composition: VF-7B 6 F2F-1 VB-7B 1 SU-3 VS-7B 2 SU-2 VT-7B 1 SU-2, 1 SU-3 YORK J J2F-1, 3 O3U-3 By 1938, Carrier Air Group 5 had formed and reported and was composed like this: VF-5 19 F2F-1, 1 O3U-1 VB-5 17 BT-1, 1 O3U-3 VS-5 10 SBC-3 VT-5 20 TBD-1 YORK 2 J2F-1, 3 O3U-3 This Airwing stayed the same thru 1940, with VF-5 getting F3F-3s, the way it looked in the movie "Dive Bomber" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Percy, John" Subject: 1/350 models Which ships that haven't been made in 1/350 scale, in injected plastic (no resin), do you think should be made? I pick injected plastic because I can't afford $100+ for a model. Maybe $60, yes, but I can't afford those resin kits. To me, Tamiya has the Missouri/New Jersey, Tirpitz/Bismarck, Yamato/Mushashi, KGV/POW, Fletcher, and the Big-E. Why on earth they haven't made a 1/350 HMS Hood is beyond me. It would probably sell like hotcakes at $60 a pop. John Percy mailto:jpercy@clariion.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From - Greg Lee (Listmaster - SMML) Subject - Re: 1/350 models Hey John, The most obvious to me would be a 1/350 Arizona, I can't for the life of me understand why Tamiya haven't looked at this one, probably a 1/350 Nimitz is my other pick. Greg (Listmaster - SMML) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Cataldo Torelli Subject: Príncipe de Asturias kit Hi there, Is there any Príncipe de Asturias kit in 1/700 ? (Príncipe de Asturias is a light carrier, the flagship of the Spanish Navy [Armada Española]) and other vessels of the fleet? Thanks in advance, Cataldo Torelli Madrid, Spain ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Morley, James (Frankfurt)" Subject: Model Shops In Frankfurt.... Dave Krakow is right. The problem here in Germany seems to be that the hobby is generally reduced to a "toy" status. Because of that, models tend to be either in toy shops, or in big department stores. These sorts of retail outlets just want convenience of ordering..... and in this respect, Revell Germany have got the market sown up. It is depressing to walk around a shop and look at row upon row of older generation Revell kits with not a Japanese offering in sight. Dave, sad though it is, the best place I have found is "Spiel & Freizeit Behle" (a toy shop) at Konstablerwache. For the rest of you, count yourself lucky you don`t live here!!! James Morley (Frankfurt, Germany) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Felix Bustelo Subject: Revell's Big USS Constitution Hello All, I realize that this forum is mainly used to discuss iron/steel ships, but I sometimes build plastic kits of wooden ships. My next project will be Revell's 1/96 scale USS Constitution. I realize that the model does not present her as she was currently restored to, which is how she looked during the War of 1812. I plan to build her out of box more or less (this may be sacrilegious to some) so I don't plan to modify her to look like she does now. My questions are: During what period in her career does this model represent her? I met someone who said that the kit shows her as she was launched. Any confirmations to this? Any thing terribly wrong with the kit's accuracy. Anybody out there in SMML land have any experience with this kit either directly or through hearsay? Thanks to all Felix R. Bustelo (the occasional "woody"). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Keith Butterley Subject: I promise dear this the LAST one I will ever buy!!! Hi guys I find for myself, that the best way to add to ones ever growing pile of unbuilt kits, is to pick them up while on vacation. It seems that my Significant Other does not object to me buying a couple when we are away. She seems to go into a what the hell we're not bringing the money back with us mode. This can be very fortuitous. I am sure half of my stockpile was purchased in this way. Thats why I am really hoping to vacation in the UK sometime early in the next century(Hello Caroline). Anyways with that thought in mind, I am going to be in LA during the first half of July, can any members give directions to the best hobby shop in town please? But keep this thought in mind, our idea of a freeway in this neck of the woods is two lanes, driving around LA for me has the appeal of taking a ride with the Light Brigade. So could if possible have very precise directions, from the Woodland Hills area to wherever I can go and spend my 25cent dollar :-( Thanks ATTN Bill Gruner I do have to go through Seattle, if I can convince her we gotta stop how do I get to Pacific Front? Keith Butterley Ready aye ready ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Douglas Martin" Subject: Error correction Folks: New 1/700 Shinano, not a fact, a 'hope', seeing as how the Yamato hull has been altered. Order sent to 'Rainbow Ten' as they take Visa direct (and I'm a previous customer). I obtained a personal cheque from a US company, to the value of $6.95, it was going to cost me £10 to cash it, ($16.50), so I've decided to frame it instead. Perhaps I'm lazy, but I prefer credit card purchases. Douglas ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: jim burt Subject: Motorized Yamato Hi All, Just thought that you all might want to know about that there is a 1/200 scale Motorized Yamato model made by Nichimo that is 4 feet in length & thatit sells for around $400, but you can find it at: http://www.globaloutlet.com for $310 includes almost everything that a non-motorized Yamato model would, plus the equipment to motorize it. They also sell alot of other battleship models & other ship models also. I wish I had the $$$$$$$ Steve ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: Graham Holmes Subject: Battle Class Destroyers There have been no Battle class destroyers in 1/700 scale, and none of the hulls of similar size are suitable for conversion. I have tried. The only kit I am aware of is the old Frog kit of approx 1/325 scale. This is not easy to find but it can be had. It is a pretty good kit, depicting Trafalgar in the late 50s with Squid and STAAG mountings installed and Hazemeyer, Starshell gun and DC racks removed. There is no appropriate etch or details available, so everything has to be scratch built. The detail level in the kit is not too bad, and the shapes of the 4.5" turrets are very good. I have one I am backdating to Barfleur a la 1945. If enough of us register interest, perhaps one might be made, Caroline? Graham Holmes ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: "Roberto Paredes" Subject: Jim Shirley Productions... Hi Guys, Do you know if Jim Shirley Productions even exist? Because, I send a lot of e-mail to them, but I don't recieve nothing. Who it sell those products? Regards, Roberto. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: EJ Foeth Subject: Bismarck & Emden My name is Evert-Jan Foeth, a student of naval engeneering and ship hydromechanics, with a fresh internet connection. I have gathered quite some information about the Bismarcks, so if you have any questions, please ask! (why Tamiya's model is completely wrong (seriously), where to get GOOD drawings (>150 dollars), why red turrettops are incorrect, aircraft markings, many books, what these so called pre-installed 150mm mounts are between C and D turret, correct camouflage patterns etc) I am currently building both of them (1/350), although my study doesn't speed up the building process. The reason I do this is because many books on the subject are in German and are not well known in the USA, leading to incorrect bismarck-home-pages, and models. Also: I now know where to obtain good drawings of the Emden (1910-1914) (>40 dollars). I am also looking for rare or out of print books concerning the Bismarcks. Please allow up to one week reply-time due to my studying enterprises ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From: "Roberto Paredes" Subject: Hobby shop in Detroit Hi Guys, Do you know any hobby shop in Detroit? I need the name and the address, because, the next week I will go to this city. Regards, Roberto. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16) From: "graham walker" Subject: Re: Battle class destroyers No I have not heard of one only the frog one in 1/500 scale and I think Airfix did one in 1/600 scale but I am not sure on that. But I am pretty sure that White Ensign Models will do one of these one day soon and I will be first in line to get one. Best wishes Graham (Cruiser Magazine). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 17) From: "Tomas E. Tirado K" Subject: USS Indianapolis, May 1944 Some days ago I sent this message to the list, I have no comments, perhaps everybody was engaged with all these Yamato NEWS!! me too !! So, is somebody knows somethin about this..... thanks a lot I am finishing a 1/700 model of the USS Indianapolis CA-35, based in the excellent old Mathbox hull, a complete rebuilt superestructure and details from different origins.( skywave, GMM, etc.) I worked based in the very useful Warship pictorial nr.1 published by Classic Warships Publications with a collection of very fine photos. I am building the lady as she looks in May 1944, with Measure 32/7D , the dazzle camouflage, and now I am painting the basic color before I put all the photoetched. Now the problem/question: I am not shure about the 5 In. gun director and radar. Also seems that the aft one is different from the other.., as I can see in the photos I have, probably is the same director with a different arrange for the radar. Somebody can tell me please: - what mk. number are both gun directors ? - what radar is installed in each gun director ? Also I need a good drawing or something useful for doing a scratchbuild job, maybe somebody knows a site in the web where I can found a good drawing of this equipment. Again, thanks a lot for the help, and thanks Greg for the list. best regards Tomas ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 18) From: Mitchell Subject: Sea Launch I found an interesting article in the Science Times section of today's NY Times. The article describes a US/Russian/Ukranian/Norwegian joint venture to launch satellite bearing missiles from the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The launch platform is a modified North Sea self-propelled oil-drilling platform capable of making 12 knots christened Odessey. The platform is serviced by a floating mission control and rocket assembly ship christened Sea Launch Commander. Commander is a 660 ft LOA with a crew of up to 240 (including rocket personnel). This could make an unique model. Paul R. By way of background I spent 11 Years on active duty in the USN and am currently a CDR. in the reserves. I served one tour on the USS Kitty Hawk(CV-63) two tours on Knox class FF's and was the First Lt. on the USS Texas (CGN-39). I think that the Polly S Haze Gay is the best match for hull with the Tamaya Panzer Gray the Best match for Deck Gray, I have taken a 3 X 5 card on board and found them to be very close to the original. The under hull color is slightly more difficult however Polly S makes A Demon Deep Red in there Fantasy range that is reasonably close. I would not get to hung up on exact matches as lighting conditions can vary the appearance of the Gray considerably. As an example a few years ago I was over at NAB Coronado Ca. and looked across the bay towards the 32nd St. Naval Station San Diego and thought that there was a LHA painted white one of the Piers and a FF painted Ocean Gray at Pier 1. I assumed (yes I know...) that the LHA was headed for the Persian Gulf to relieve the La Salle, though I couldn't imagine why anyone would Paint a FF Ocean Gray. It turned out both ships were really Haze Gray. We had a 50/50 cloud cover with squalls. The LHA was in a shaft of sun shine while the FF was in the shadow of a cloud. While this is an extreme example of the effects of light, while at sea I have frequently observed apparent differences in color on ships that I knew were the same color. The grays the Navy uses does not fade very much. I have frequently had my guys paint a section of deck to repair scrapes ect. and had it match the sounding deck within 24 hrs.(mainly full drying time.) Weathering carrier decks in this scale. The main visible weathering from the bridge or further is the fading out of the flight deck lines from the stern to the angle deck from the lllines. The lines get covered with exhaust and rubber from the tires. Note if you examine the tie downs you will find small degree of rust in the bottom and some bare metal where hooks have scraped the paint. This is not visible from more than about 6'. I could go on and on and on... about where and how various ships "weather" but I suspect I've either put 99.9 % of you to sleep already or provided enough ammo to keep a small war on colors going for a while. The most Important advise is once you pick the paint you are going to use for this project use the same ones on the next project in this scale, especially if they are going to be displayed together. Good Luck Greg ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 20) From: Michael Eisenstadt Subject: Hobby Shops in Germany To Uwe Besken: Uwe, thanks for your prompt, detailed response to my posting.
