I wrongly told Cataldo Torelli a few days ago that Independence and Dedalo/Cabot were different class ships. Not true; both are Indpendence-class CVLs and therefore he should be able to build Dedalo from the Revell (ex-Skywave) kit. << I have the DML/Dragon re-issue of the Independence kit, which also includes the lower hull, and it has decal markings for all (most?) of the Independence class CVLs including the Cabot. If anyone is interested in discussion of the Dedalo/Cabot since it's return to the USA, use DejaNews or SuperNews and search on Cabot in the usenet newsgroup sci.military.naval. There have been many discussions about the fate of the ship over the last few years. There also is a photo feature of the Cabot on the USNSM site: http://www.uss-salem.org Look in the features section. Most of the pictures were taken while she was in 'Nawlins (New Orleans). I do remember from those old discussions that Spain did not radically change much of the Cabot's configuration while she served as Dedalo. Someone pointed out that only 2 of the 4 exhaust uptakes on the outside of the ship were in place and used when she was retired. In 1/700 scale, that is probably the only really noticable change. On a final note, I hope that the USS Cabot/Dedalo can beat the odds and be saved. She is the only WWII carrier still in her original configuration, she is the only straight deck carrier left in existance, and she is the only converted cruiser carrier left in existance. The 'C' in CV originally stood for cruiser, so CV was Cruiser-Aviation. (CA was already taken.) What about the Squadron Signal book ? I'm planning to improve a little the kits: railings and rigging mainly. And, any help on painting ? The kit instructions aren't very clear for me. << I have the Squadron U-Boats in Action publication. They have photographs and small lines drawings of all the U-Boat classes. For 1/700 scale this could be an inexpensive resource. The center spread (2 pages) are color drawings of a Type VIIC in summer 1942 Mediterranean scheme, and a summer 1943 scheme. The opposite page has 4 more color schemes. The back cover also has the Type IXC in a late war 1945 scheme. Between the black and white photographs and the color drawings you should have enough information for those tiny sub kits. Larry Ouellette ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3 From: Sue & Ben Subject: The sins of Lionfish Hi Mark, The Revell Lionfish needs a fair amount of work. First the overscale (way, way overscale) weld lines on the hull should be sanded off. Then be sure to double check the limber hole pattern for the boat being made; IIRC Revell's is a composite of the limber hole pattern from many yards. And speaking of limber holes (did anyone notice I seem to like that word) a decision will have to be made weather to just paint them black or drill them out. Of course if you decide to correct their placement drilling becomes the option of choice. Lastly, a lot of topside details have to be re-done or improved so starting by the acquisition of the Nautilus Model upgrade (as someone else mentionned) is probably a good idea. However, if you were asking on behalf of the previously mentionned 13 year old perhaps you shouldn't let him read this! :-) Cheers Ben in Montreal, Canada ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Sue & Ben Subject: Stripping Tamiya paint Hi all, Someone mentionned having trouble removing Tamiya acrylics with a combination of alcohol and rubing. The solution to this dilema is simple; switch solvent. The perfect Tamiya paint remover is Windex(tm) or similar window cleaner fluid. Spray it on your model and just watch the cured paint sluice off! No lie G.I. In addition to Norman Friedman's fine 2-volume study on U.S. submarine design, the USNI Press offers John Alden's The Fleet Submarine in the U.S. Navy, an outstanding monograph specifically about the fleet boats in which Mr. Seitz is interested. The book is very well illustrated, both with photos and with line drawings by John Humphreys. A.D. Baker, III ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: PulligS@aol.com Subject: cats and CONSTITUTION Just read vol215 & Roberts Revell's Constitution. Our kittens were doing their business under the wardrobe in the living room so the "little lady" found that the "big box" was a perfect fit. She says I'll never build it any way. She does let me get it out when all the cats are outside so I do get to see it every now and then. The old boat gets back at the cats after all. When I was 17 I built the small Constitution andjust when I got the standing rigging done my twin sister sat on it. We still don't talk a lot. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: dhjonespsm@juno.com (Daniel H. Jones) Subject: Re: Squadron US Submarines book. The book has indeed been around for many years, but had gone out of print. In the latest Squadron "flyer' it is listed as a re-issue. Apparently they have re-printed the book and it is now available by mail so, presumably, your hobby shop can now get it again. As regards the mixed comments about the Squadron "in action series" ship books, I have always given them a fairly decent review in the magazine. The books are not without their faults, but I regard them as a remarkably cheap source for photos. As such they are a bargain for modelers, but you have to be wary of the captions and text as they often contain errors. Just get them as picture books and look elsewhere for the history and technical information. I have the Flower Class Corvettes of the RCN, but would like to obtain the Anatomy of the Ship series for the Agassiz. I have the Matchbox 1/72 in the attic and I am getting antsy!
