Samish" Subject: Re: "Sewing" ship model hulls The references to "sewing" hulls on ship models has me intrigued. Apparently "sewing" the hulls with needle and thread was done in the distant past, and is now a lost art. My question is this: What purpose did "sewing" the hull serve? I want to let you know that you do a great job with SMML. There are many manufacturers as well as expert modelers who contribute to this and it's always informative. (I'm new at this and it is sometimes a challenge to figure out what they are talking about. I still haven't figured out what "WEM" means.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From : Greg Lee (Listmaster - SMML) Subject : Re: "Sewing" ship model hulls and other wofting Hi Norman, The sewing of the hulls I believe was a typo by Alberto Rada, who cleared it up by posting: >> Full of shame and hiding inside a closet I confess that I meant to SAW the hull at the waterline, I'll run now, << After a very interesting "blow by blow" description by Jim Gordon :-) As far as what WEM stands for - well, let me see, OH - TO MANY JOKES - HEAD HURTING, TOO MUCH PRESSURE!........mmm...no, I would love to, and I know about 20 other comedians here who could come up with a whole bunch of hilarious ideas (Like they did when somebody asked what SMML stood for:-) but I should really spoil everybody's fun before Dave and Caroline unsubscribe, and add an extra 25% on all orders placed by SMML readers. Actually I hale from 150 miles up the road in Aberdeen, but I do know Glasgow's model shops reasonably well. Really there's only one worth the effort , Jameson's in the Saltmarket area . Getting there involves something of a hike, but here goes, (this is on foot! most of the roads I'm describing are pedestrian only). Starting from Glasgow's main shopping street, Sauchihall, you make towards Argyll street, (look for sign's for the St Enoch Centre). Once you arrive in Argyll street, turn left away from the shopping centre's, and towards the more run down area. What you're aiming for is a large stone cross/, at the end of the road, follow it round to your right, by this time you should be looking down a typical Glasgow street, (all sandstone tenements), and approx. 20 yards of so down the street is Jamieson's. This is a typical hobby shop of the old type, about the size of 3 large phone box's, but full from ceiling to floor of kits, and accessories. The emphasis seems to be on AFV's , (for some reason the south of Scotland is a mecca for AFV builders, north of the Tay its aircraft!), but there's stuff there for everyone. I seem to recall the owner of the shop invested in a WEM Hood, so he can't be all bad Hope this helps Colin Ritchie PS Glasgow also has the normal Beatties shop, and its Ok, just not that exciting, its adjacent to the St.Enoch centre. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Alberto Rada Subject: Osa II and Viribus Unitis I have the Osa II too (also) to (so it will ) be build in some future life, it is a very good model though, good plastic, good photoetch, also got the brochure on the Viribus Unitis, this was never released, now I believe this company went belly up, also that someone else got the masters for the Viribus Unitis, hope it is released someday, is this correct? if so, these are collectors items now SALUDOS Alberto ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Ed Grune Subject: Coastal Freighter - James Pasquill SMML 247 James A company named Coastal Forces advertizes on the Modelers Boatyard site. I was wondering if any of you knows this POSEIDON PROGRAM company. << I thought that Poseidon was a Czech company that went out of business a few years ago. No matter. They did the Nanuchka and an Osa missile boat. I have the latter and it is an excellent kit. The number of parts is almost mind- boggling. Quality and fit are first rate, the instructions are very comprehensive, and the brass is nice, too. I got the Osa from Bill Gruner a while back and the Squadron Shop was also stocking Poseidon kits. Poseidon was planning other European naval models, a WW1 Austrian battleship(?), but nothing more was heard from them. But to answer your question -- No, you will not at all be disappointed. First off, I'd like to thank everyone who responded to my queries on the USS Oakland. The info I recieved was most welcome. Now I have a few more questions. A friend of mine was looking for a good match to Thayer Blue. He does primarily 1/700 and 1/1250 stuff, so scale matches would be helpful. Secondly, I need to know if 1/350 WW2 US doors are available, as some of the detail definition was lost during the casting of the Oakland. Again, thank you. However, in the interest of saving time, patience, and broken micro drill bits, I'd like to suggest cutting the rails as Mr. Foeth suggests, then simply glueing them in place with white glue, a tiny dab of glue on each leg. This worked well for me on my 1/350 Yamato. However, I might add that being able to insert a part into a hole is always more appealing. Jones) Subject: Decals I agree about the quality of both GMM's and the Skywave sheets. Between the two most of the important markings are available to 1/700 modelers. I am particularly impressed with the national flags sheet from Loren, but I wish he had made the flags flat rather than "furled",(printed with a rippled effect as if blowing in a breeze). Making the flags flat opens more possibilitues for their application. For example, a few years ago a British frigate had a flag painted on top of the bridge (for what purpose I do not know - I just saw a photo), and there is the application as "neutrality" markings for some warships and for numerous merchant vessels in both of the World Wars. If anyone should consider doing a (flat) flag sheet I think it would be a good seller for there are many applications for aircraft, armor, and scenic models, as well as for ships. This flexibility might make this sheet a good gamble for some enterprising manufacturer. If the right balance of sizes is provided, the sheet could sell for all of these modeling applications. Add U.S. Confederate flags and you might be able to attract car modelers as well. Just a thought, and a product I would certainly purchase! Dan ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: dhjonespsm@juno.com (Daniel H. Jones) Subject: Re: Poseidon kits. I found the recent postings about the Poseidon kits interesting, and surprising. I didn't think any of them were still around to be purchased. According to my information, Poseidon folded up about two years ago, so either a few more kits are being molded, or much more likely, some existing stock is being disposed of. I saw both kits, OSA II and NANUCHKA, and my impression was that they were fairly good, of mixed materials, somewhat "heavy" in detail, and VERY overpriced. If my memory is correct, the NANUCHKA kit had a vacuum formed hull, and the OSA II hull was injected, but split down the centerline (it might be the other way around). I did not purchase either kit as they were about $50.00 and $85.00 respectively. I think the high price is probably why the company failed. Apparently the 1/350 VIRIBUS UNITUS kit was at an advanced stage of design when the company folded, and I have been told that the tooling was acquired by Revell Germany, so this kit may yet be released eventually. The same may also apply for the Russian Whisky "LONGBIN" sub kit, although I have no specific info about this. A flyer on future releases published by Poseidon included a photo of the VIRIBUS UNITUS model that looked GREAT, but closer examination suggested that the photo was of a museum model of a much larger scale. The polished brass barrels and deck fittings suggest it was a large scale (1/4" to the foot probably) builders model, as this style of presentation was typical of that period. It was certainly not a photo of a built up 1/350 scale kit. Shortly before they folded Poseidon exhibited a VIRIBUS UNITUS hull molding, guns, and some superstructure parts at a German hobby show, and I personally have had the chance to examine castings of the main gun turrets. They looked quite good, and confirmed that the project had progressed well beyond the "idea" stage. About a year ago a rumor circulated briefly that the "LONGBIN" had been released in very small numbers, however I seriously doubt this. I have not heard from anyone who has actually seen an example of this kit. That is about all I have learned about Poseidon Models. Can anyone fill in the blanks? Is it still in stainless steel? Thanks in advance for any info.
