Worth checking out if you have the kit. << I have recieved the test shot for my new 1/700 Arleigh Burke detail set to outfit this model. It will fit FLT-1, FLT-2, FLT-2A versions of the Burke class. I'm currently finishing up the instruction sheet. They will retail for $14.00. So take heart. It's on the way. I sent Paolo (at Navismagazine.com) a set to add to his kit he has been reviewing. Rusty White Flagship Models Inc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Felix Bustelo Subject: Decals on Textronix Printer Dear Colin, In my office we have a Textronix Phaser IIIPxi color printer (it is a monstrosity!) and I took the plunge with a very modest decal project. I needed to simulate the grills on the vents that are on the sides on the stacks on the Revell SS United States, as well as some windows and portholes. It worked great. You must make sure that the decal paper that you use is for use on laser printers. I created the decals using Corel Draw, but the decals I made were not complex at all and I am by no stretch of the imagination a graphic artist. Please keep in mind, that color laser printers DO NOT print the color white. So, in order to outline the tennis and volleyboard courts on the sports deck of the SS US, I used very fine white stripe decals that are normally used for model railroads. Laser decal paper comes in two varieties - clear and white. The white is useful if you need to print decals where white is surrounded by other colors - likes flags and pennants. It is not useful to create draft markings or ships names, unless you are a expert with the Xacto knife and can carve out individual numbers and letters out of white decal paper. Hope this helps and stay warm over there in Frozen North, cheers, Felix Bustelo ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Rand100@aol.com Subject: Acrylic paint thinning With all this talk about paint brands I've got to try some of these other brands. I've used Tamiya Acrylic Paint for the last few years (it has been easy to find, but is getting harder) and have had no trouble thinning it. I use Isopropyl Alcohol only, no water. Isoopropyl Alcohol comes in different concentrations and I've found that using the 99% Isopropyol works great. To view the catalog and order on line, the address is: http://www.modelersboatyard.com/taubmans/taubman1.htm The Floating Drydock has more US warships, but you can't beat Taubman's for everything else (including a 1/144 plan of the Yam... well, you know). Regards, Duane Fowler ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Duane Fowler Subject: Laser Printing Decals You can laser print decals fairly successfully on a color laser printer but you must be carefull when transfering them. Since the toner is a wax based material that is deposited on the surface of the decal sheet, any excesive bending will cause it to crack. I have heard that spraying it first with a clear coat will help prevent this, but I haven't tried it yet. The only limitation to the detail achievable is the resolution of your printer. Also, if your pattern contains white or very light colors, you must either use white (as opposed to clear) decal sheets or paint the background on the model white. Regards, Duane Fowler P.S. I spent a year on Shetland Islands in the late 70's and the temperature never reached 70F (69F was the hot day) Winter days of 1 hour daylight was enough to get me started on ships. That was where I built my first Yam... well, you know. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Shane & Lorna Jenkins Subject: HMS Hood monografie by Tadeusz Klimczyk Hi all, I picked up the above book a couple of weeks ago & finally unwrapped it & had a look. Great pictures but unfortunatly I can't read or speak Polish(yes I knew it was in polish but it was going cheap A$14.00). Does anyone know where I can find an english translation on the net. Also is there any chance of this & the other titles in the series coming out in english as they look to contain a lot of details. It would be a shame if all this info was only for the Poles. Otherwise to avoid the in-enveitable replies I'll just have to look into learning polish(as well as Hungarian). Lots of details on correcting minor problems, construction tips, etc. A good friend was XO of Barry and is PCO of Winston Churchill. I promised him a built up model of one of them so I was glad to see the Skywave kit finally hit the shelves. Mike ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: Bradford Chaucer Subject: Viking USS Texas Hi: Question for anyone who has looked at or started on the Viking 1/350 Texas kit: Flagship Models just came out with a Brass PE set for the kit. Is it needed? or is it just replacing existing brass?? The frets appear to have Railings, cranes, 200mm Olerkons,a catapult, ladders and a bunch of other stuff. The one thing it does not have, which appears to be a glaring ommission is a brass cagemast to replace the filled in resin one in the kit. Is this worth the $36 asking price?? Hi Guys, Ian Ruscoe, a very good friend of ours, with WEM's assistance, is building the demo model of the proposed British Trimaran "Stealth" carrier for the company concerned.. the question is this.. As he has now scratch-built the Osprey (helo), the Joint Strike Fighter, the Merlin and the Eurofighter for this purpose 1n 1/350 .. would anyone out there be interested in us doing these aircraft as kits?? All would have etcched brass details. And no, don't ask us about that carrier..... my lips are sealed... except to say that it definitely resembles a Klingon Battlecruiser!!!!
