Hi Gang, The Big Beast has ported at my place tonight. In one of those unexplainable, and almost "Heaven Sent" religious situations, where I walked into the local hobby store, and a ray of light shone in through the window on this box, and I heard a church choir type"AHHHH" sound when I realised what it was, Which I am sure happens to all modellers at least once in their life when they find "THE" kit. 1/350 Soviet Nuclear Powered Ballistic Missile Submarine "TYPHOON" by Dragon Models. I have been keen on this since I saw a doco on the discovery channel about it, and have never been able to find it. I was quiet pleasantly surprised too, I didn't really have high expectations of the kit, since it was one of those "cheapy" names/packaging combo's, but behold - its quiet good. And as Usual - Everything else will stop while I begin construction!!!! (Such a typical scenario here ain't it?) The extremely Japanese instruction manual calls out Gunze Sangyo brand paint for construction, which are available to me, but I have not previously used them, and am a little unsure of them. My Question is: Are GS paints workeable, and colours reasonably well matched to the real subjects? Or would I be best to stick with what I know (Tamiya Paints)? Thanks Greg (Listmaster/Lustmaster) P.S. Some might think I have weird taste, and I can see that Typhoon may be perceived as an ugly fat bloated "Blimp in Water", And Big Yamato is ugly etc.. But they make me happy, and in modelling, Thats all that counts for me:-) I put it to you - "Keep SMML Ship-Bashing Free"? (No Desrespect meant, just trying to make a happy environment) P.S.S. Thanks to everyone who posted help for Steve Re: File Corruption ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Jeff Herne" Subject: Re: Flowers First of all, I never intended any disrespect to those who served, or died, aboard Flowers. Nor do I belittle their accomplishments. But face it, they're not the prettiest ships in the world. Some dog people actually think pugs are cute...that Volkswagen Beetles are pretty, that disco was the best thing from the 70s, that Nixon was innocent, and professional wrestling is REAL...need I continue? My aunt is butt-ugly, but I still love her... So Relax. Jeff ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Max Loosli Subject: Larger Scales - Dean's Marine >> For those interested in the larger scales, there is, or was, a firm in the U.K. or Ireland called Dean's Marine which produced a range of ships in 1:96 scale. These included a Liberty Ship and several WW2 and modern British warships. I seem to recall that these were/are fibreglass hulls with plastic superstructures and metal fittings, aimed at the scale radio control market. Perhaps others can provide further information? << FYI, Dean's Marine Conquest Drove Farcet Fen Peterborough PE7 3DH Tel: +44 (0)1733 244166 They have just announced a 1/96 HMS Dreadnought (Length: 1.66M, Beam: 0.265M). Hull is a one piece fibreglass moulding, deck is plywood, main turrets are fibreglass, rest is vac-form, cast acrylic, alloy castings. Full-size - 1/96 I presume ...:-) - plans are included. Price is given as ?495. I am now in negotiation with senior management ('so where do you think you're going to put it ?!') because I REALLY want one ! There's a small black & white photo on page 32 and an even smaller colour photo on the back cover of July's Model Boats. Regards to all, and thanks for the list, Max Loosli P.S. Never had any file receipt problems. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: SHIPMDLR@aol.com Subject: Re: Analizing B&W prints >> I finished one last year and after researching a number of sources painted it overall dark green. "American Steel Navy" has a couple photos that are useful for details and in the photos it is not black when seen next to known black objects. << If you have a pretty good quality B&W photo, Tom Walkowiak at Floating Dry- dock is a virtual expert analizing color in relation to B&W shades. He may be able to help. Rusty White Flagship Models Inc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Sue & Ben Subject: Corvettes babblings I think I'll chime in to put a different spin on Jeff comments and the rejoinders by Caroline and Tim. I'm a Canadian. As such, I must like Corvettes (I think it's written somewhere in the Constitution). And I do. I mean, I could I not? They formed the bulk of our navy during WW2. We were, literaly, the Corvette Navy. Historically the little ships were a slap-dash attemp at putting lots of ASW weapomry on the water, and as such lacked many of the virtues of their bigger brethrens. This does not, and indeed should not, detract from their sterling service and from the valor of the men who served and died on them. But let's call a spade a spade. Irrespective of my liking them, I have to admit that they _are_ butt ugly and it's that it _is_ hard to think of them as 'real' warships. I'll happily grant to anyone wishing to debate the point that it's a matter of opinion... Cheers Ben Montreal, Canada ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: SantMin@aol.com Subject: Re: Potemkin >> Hello, does anyone know of a source in the USA for the Ogonek kit in 1/400 of the Potemkin, I would like to try this kit, also has anyone built it up? How is it? Any real problems? Thanks in advance for any help. << Jon, I had a stack of these. Got one left. Regular price is $14.98, my price is $10.50 plus $3.00 postage. Bob Santos ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: File corruption I have not had that problem at all. The only problem I've had has been with the occasional overly large SMML file, which my e-mail software cannot open. In those few cases I've had to drag it to my desktop and then open it with Word or Text. All in all, no biggie. John Snyder ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Terry Sumner" Subject: Re: Corrupted files Greg, Just to let you know, been a subscriber since day 1 and every file has come through perfectly. Terry Sumner ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Dbrown303@aol.com Subject: Re File corruption problems Hello Greg, Is it possible that he is confusing the need to download the email as a file? I have AOL and the three or four issues before the last two were too large to be recognized by AOL as an email. Apparently AOL defaults to a file setting if it is too large a email, and the subscriber (me) has to download the text as a file, then go into the drive to read the text of that file (using AOL's 'file search'). Just some thoughts from someone who barely know's computers. Derek ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Mike Settle Subject: Re: File corruption problems >> This is the second time Steve has mailed me about this, I have looked into it from my end, he has checked his end, and It just doesn't seem to make sense. Has anybody else experienced this problem? << I have had no problems receiving SMML on this end of North Carolina (Rocky Mount). I am using Eudora Light as my mail reader. I have had a few problems reading the newsgroups lately, though. For that I am using Netscape Communicator, version 4.something. I am not a computer whiz by any means, I scream at my oldest son to fix it when things glitch, but perhaps Steve's problem is caused by his mail reader. Also, if he has installed any new programs on his system lately this can sometimes overwrite or corrupt the files of existing programs. Mike ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: SantMin@aol.com Subject: Re: lost messages Greg, I don't know about his server but with AOL, if an email exceeds a certain length, I only get the header and must download the entire message. No problem, just one more step. This happens to me about two aout of every five SMML emails. Bob Santos ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Bradford Chaucer Subject: getting it loud and clear The subject says it all. I've never experienced a problem. I did notice the following in the message header: Subject: SMML1/8/98Vol258 X-MIME-Autoconverted: from quoted-printable to 8bit by ixmail9.ix.netcom.com id FAA09954 Perhaps Steve's problem is in the conversion?? What email program is he using to read the list?? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
