(my First RN ship - so go easy on me:-) I have decided on HMS ZULU, as this is one of the main ships the kit is based on, but I am having a lot of trouble finding info, so if anybody has a pic of Zulu they could e-mail me, I would be very appreciative. Thanks Greg ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "FERNANDO, YOHAN" Subject: How many models? Hello, A couple of days ago, someone mentioned they had about 1300 model ships in their collection. Is that correct? Where do you keep them all? No matter what scale, 1300 ships is ALOT! I don't feel so guilty any longer for the growing size of my collection :) I am always wrestling with the problem of finding ways to store my ever growing collection and was wondering how many models other people had and how they stored them. Myself, I have about 80 1/700 WWII ships in a display case I built six months ago. It measures approx. 72" x 48" x 18" (is this useful for the metric people out there?), is made of wood with two plexiglass doors on front and has adjustable shelves. I'm using five shelves at the moment and things are getting tight. BTW- last night on the Discovery channel, there was a great program called 'Sunk by the Bismarck' about the history of the HMS Hood. Did anyone else see it? There were a few incorrect facts, but it included a good discussion about the various theories on the cause of her loss. There was also a nice piece of color footage of the Hood which I hadn't seen before. If you missed it, it will probably be shown again sometime soon, so check the Discovery channel page for listings. Vincennes has no instructions - does anybody have set that they could xerox? Thanks! Also I'd like to be pointed at some good POW refs. This looks like a great kit, but I don't know from POW kits. Is it? Is there a standard kit for this ship? A standard reference book? Thanks for your help, and no hurry on any of this! It's not like I haven't got stuff to work on . . . Ken Durling ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Norman C. Samish" Subject: Fine Models Wanted Dr. August T. Horvath, in "Modelling and the Unwashed Masses," discusses the value of models displayed to the public. He says, " The model is . . . worth what someone would pay for it. With fairly rare exceptions that means it is worth pretty close to nothing." Dr. Horvath's statement is at: http://www.PacificHistory.com/PEMMODELFILE/MASSES.HTML If that's so, then shouldn't I be able to find some of these display-quality models at low prices? I ask because I would like to own some accurate 1937 - 1945 ship models in 1:350, but I lack the time and talent to build them successfully. When I look for one for sale I wind up at Fine Arts or other sites that sell fine models. See: http://www.maritimereplicas.com/about.htm and http://www.fineartmodels.com/ However, I'm deterred by the prices- $2,000 to $11,000 for a ship model. (I think these prices are reasonable considering the expenditure of time and talent to produce them.) I would like to know if there other sources for collectors? Or do I grit my teeth and write big checks? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: KDur597268@aol.com Subject: ID this kit? Hi again - I acquired a kit of unknown identity, and I'm hoping one of you wizards can ID it for me from the scanty info I can provide: It came in an Airfix HMS Victorious box on which somebody wrote "HMS Hood". Without looking closely, sometime ago I requested a set of instructions for Hood, and Mr. Ritchie from this list was kind enough to provide them. Well, it's neither Victorious OR Hood. But I don't know who it is: 4 turrets (2 fwd 2 aft) of 2 guns apiece; and the main stack has a swept "foot" (I'm hoping that gives it away!) extending aft. There is a second, much smaller stack. 6 smaller turrets - 5-inch? - with 2 barrels apiece. Clipper bow. The whole hull has a somewhat "swept-back" look, almost reminds me of Bismarck. Turrets of main batteries have a 45-degree bevel on front and sides, back is curved, and there are small box-like "wings" on the top rear of the sides of them. 2 large boat cranes. The above mentioned ship also has a pronounced inward indentation of the "tumblehome" at the breaks of the forecastle and "poop." Ring any bells? Thanks! Hi, Thanks for the response on my question about the Ohio. It was most helpful. I am now looking for the 1:350 scale brass modern submarine propellors by Flagship Models. Since I am just looking for one prop. I am wondering if any one has one that they would like to part with for a reasonable price? Thanks You.
