I don't model anything later than WW2, knew that BAINBRIDGE wasn't available in that scale, and couldn't remember seeing models of the other classes that ran with us during the 'Nam era. Sorry 'bout that. As pointed out, a FRAM 710-class DD would also be appropriate, but I've got to say that they generally didn't last too long when escorting the Big E. Unlike all the other CVAs that were conventionally-powered at that time, ENTERPRISE had this habit of coming down from 30+ knots during air ops to still steam around at about 25 or so (the conventional CVAs would drop down to probably 18-20), which meant that those poor conventional escorts had to keep extra boilers on line, etc. Being a nuke, we didn't have that problem on BAINBRIDGE. Anyway, most of the FRAMs (and some of the newer DDs/DDGs) didn't last too long before an engineering casualty would send them limping back to Subic Bay. John Snyder -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "joseph w. reyna" Subject: Re: Airfix lobbying Like Keith and David, I would dearly love to see Airfix take upon themselves the task of issuing new 1/600 warship kits. However, like them, I find the likelihood of such an event to be sadly minute. What I would like to know is how many of us in SMML-land would lend our names to a petition to Airfix to issue a new ship model? The first step would be to choose a subject - I for one would wish to see a 1/600 HMS INVINCIBLE aircraft carrier. This kit would be well complemented by Airfix's existing frigate/destroyer models, and could even be packaged with them if a "Falklands Campaign Commemorative" were envisioned. I think our best chance of success is to pick one proposed new subject, and get as many names as possible on the petition to ask Airfix to produce the kit. Depending on the number of names we can muster, this might well carry some weight with the good folk at Airfix. What say ye, fellow shipwrights? Joe Reyna -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "RLOCKIE" Subject: HMS Glasgow According to MJ Whitleys Cruisers of WW2, both Sheffield and Glasgow belonged to the same batch of Southampton class cruisers. The only differences were therefore the refits that they experienced before the US refit to Glasgow in April 1942. Glasgow received two unrotating projectile (UP) mounts in early summer 1940, along with a Type 286 radar. The ineffective UP mounts were removed in 1941. Sheffield received a Type 284 radar and a Type 285 in summer 1941. In September 1941, she was fitted with six single 20mm Oerlikons to replace the two quad 0.5" MGs. All subsequent refits were during or after Glasgow's US refit. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: KDur597268@aol.com Subject: Re: Airfix Bismarck/Tirpitz kits >> The Airfix Bismarck/Tirpitz kits are identical except that Tirpitz has 2 holes in the deck, aft of the catapult for 2 sets of Torpedo tubes, 1 per side. << Thanks, Douglas - I am now beginning to realize that this kit *may* be missing parts, as well as include some not from the kit. (i.e. 2nd funnel). There are no torpedo tubes in this box, and I'm really not sure whether the catapult deck is present. I don't think so, but then, I am not intimate with the ship. I may try to persuade a local shop owner to open a Bismarck for me so I can decide whether it's her or Tirpitz. Evert - sorry, I don't have a website yet to post photos on. That sure would have made all this easier, wouldn't it? Thank you all for your kind attention to my question! Greatly appreciated. Burke and Adams. You can find us at http://www.navalbasehobbies.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: LeadSled58@aol.com Subject: WTT: DML Spruance VLS Ahoy mates: I have a 1/350 DML Spruance VLS that I would like to trade for a non VLS version of this class or a Ticonderoga class CG. It is missing one SH-60 and the decals for this one helicopter, otherwise complete. If you have a CG or ASROC Spruance take the SH-60 out of that one and we should be ok. Let me know if anyone is interested. Tom -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
