It seems that Skywave/Pitroad(?) are very good in general(Like Tamiya i suppose) but what about Arii and Fujimi and Hasegawa? << Fredrik, In my experience I have found Skywave/Pitroad the undisputed top of the food chain when it comes to injection molded models of any kind anywhere. Tamiya and Hasegawa are a close second but do not have the minute detail or clean molding of the Skywave/Pitroad line. Fujimi, Arii and the others while are good companies few of their models are up to the standards of the others. I'm sure there are exceptions, but for the most part this is how I see it. Man, this thing is a bit bigger than I was expecting. Beautifull resin casting, wonderful detail, tons of photo-etching and a whole squadron of aircraft to help fill the the fully detailed hangar bay. All these parts and only one little flange broke in the mail but was quickly fixed. I almost had a religious experieance just looking at it. On another note, it was suggested to me that conversion kits with brass details would be welcome to convert the new 1/700 Iowa class kits to modern Iowa class versions. What about it? I think these guys picked me up on SMML. You will remember I posted a request for plans of a Moskva class antisubmarine cruiser a couple of months back. Well, I heard from a guy in Russia and he said he could obtain them for me. He works at the agency that has the plans apparently. We e-mailed back and forth for a few weeks and suddenly heard nothing for several weeks. One day a response shows up with a price quote of $150.00 for the plans or they would be willing to trade the plans for good information books about ships. I told him I didn't want to pay $150.00 for the plans but I had some books he may be interested in. I proposed to send the Anatomy of the Ship series book "Victorious," the desert Storm Special "Seapower, The Coalition and Iraqi Navies", United States Naval Destroyers of WW2, American cruisers of WW2 and Ballards book, "The Discovery of the Bismarck." I received an answer today and they agreed to the trade. I don't know how good the plans are (but I was very clear what I needed to build a model). The books I sent were worth a fair $150.00. I hope the plans are. So I'll wait and see. They told me they have plans of many more Russian vessels at their disposal and they look forward to future exchanges. If this works out, and I'm happy with the plans, I'll put their e-mail address here for all to check out. Since I don't know these people, I'm taking a risk parting with my books and paying the postage. I can only hope they treat me fair as well. I'll keep you posted. I'm sure this has been discussed to death but I missed almost all the SMML postings from 100 to 275. What's up with this kit - what's wrong what's on the PE set (gonna order that next week). Thanks Mark -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: JGordon262@aol.com Subject: 1/700 floaternet baskets John Fox wrote: >> Does anyone have any suggestions about scratchbuilding floaternet baskets in 1/700? Does any PE manufacturer make these? It would seem like a logical item to include on a PE ship set. Thanks << Try using 1/700 photoetch railing by cutting a two or three stanchion length piece of it and then rolling it widthwise around a Dremel bit shaft. It will be filled with floaternet anyway, so exact detail is not required. Hello All I'm putting together a list of all known model kits of Hood (ready-to-build kits to include injection molded plastic, resin, card, metal, wood, etc.) To the best of my knowledge the primary Hood kits are/were: WEM (1/350), Airfix (1/600), Italieri (1/720), Tamiya (1/700), Heller (1/400) and Iron Shipwrights (1/350). If any of you know of any other ready-to-assemble kits (i.e.: 1/1200 scales, war-game miniatures, card/paper, etc.), I'd greatly appreciate it if you would write me directly mailto=AllenFW2@aol.com. Info will be posted to a scale modeling page on the NavShips History Ring web site "With the Winds Favorable...An Homage to HMS Hood" ( http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Workshop/2966 Thanks All! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Growlrr@aol.com Subject: Re: Atlanta Details Hi folks.... I musta missed the volume regarding detail questions on the Atlanta class...The book is in fact about 80% complete and layout will begin within the week...It'll have information gleaned form interviewing over a dozen former crewmwmbers and literally dozens and dozens of never before published photos (even I was surprised at what I got my hands on!) In the meantime, if you have a specific question or two, repost them amd I'll see what I can find out.... We sold a massive Aud$970.00 approx of kits, of which APMA took a 10% cut, so a good day was had by all. I managed to pick up an Airfix 1/600 RMS Mauretania & an Airfix Free Enterprise Ferry for the stunning price of Aud$20.00 for the both of them. The other bargain of the the day for me was getting a Skywave 1/700 USS Oliver Hazard Perry class FFG(with Aussie markings) for an low Aud$7.00(they retail here for $45 approx & $30 for the Dragon & Revell re-releases). So people read it & weep :-). I also got a few other off topic items & Lorna managed to pick up some bargains as well. The moral here I suppose is never if possible miss out on your local club's auction as there are bargains galore to be found. Just another excellant reason to find & support a local modelling club. Has anyone else found a real bargain at auctions? All the best, Shane (who's wondering: when I'll find the time to build all the models I've brought at auctions over the years) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: SHIPMDLR@aol.com Subject: Re: Floater Net Storage Bins >> Does anyone have any suggestions about scratch-building floater net baskets in 1/700? Does any PE manufacturer make these? It would seem like a logical item to include on a PE ship set << I have them in the 1/350 Texas/New York detail set and the Early War Fletcher Class Destroyer set. Problem is that's a bit of money to spend to get the floater net storage bins. Floating Dry-dock may have them as separate parts. Checkout their web site. You can see all my detail sets on my web site.
