Hi Greg >> Just been watching the IMAX Titanica video, and I was wondering whatever happened to Carpathia? << Video? I guess you guys don't have an IMAX screen down there. And that's too bad, the IMAX format has an 'in your face' quality all its own. But to answer your question. From the murky depths of my memory ISTR that she was lost to a U-Boat during WW1. Treat this info as somewhat suspect until someone else confirms it though. >> Was there ever a kit of her made? << Sorry, I'm no help on this one. Ben Montreal, Canada P.S. Happy 300th, belatedly. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Grace, Paul" Subject: Pasadena or Springfield Retro Converting Renwall/Revell 1/600 Pasadena or Springfield CGLs to original CL configuration. That is a full W.W.II Cleveland Class gun cruiser. I have the 1/700 WL early Cleveland and the Lindberg USS Columbia CL-56. Now that I finally got my hands on these kits, would like to try this modification and would appreciate any help. Thanks, PG -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Vimieraa@aol.com Subject: Re: Floaternets Floaternets. What navy are you talking about? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: SHIPMDLR@aol.com Subject: Re: No Moskva >> I know that Abe Taubman at Taubaman Plans Service has a number of modern Soviet warships - a Slava class, a couple of DDG's, etc. You might want to get his catalog if you are interested in these. http://www.seaways.com/mall/abe.html << Been there, done that. No Moskva. Great catalogue though. I don't know the scale but the hull of the Hood is 26.5 inches long. Lower hulls are completely wrong. Models were set up to be motorized an have one prop and a moveable rudder. Upperworks look like a Hood. I bought mine years ago to sail around on the pond behind the house I lived in at the time. Bruce Buchner -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Torgeson Roger A Subject: Iowa conversion Rusty, How about a 1/350 conversion for the Tamiya New Jersey so the Iowa, Wisconsin or Missouri could be built. Just a thought. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: KelDQ@aol.com Subject: Essex class - Hangar bay question I've started construction on my Tom's 1/350 Yorktown, and nowhere in any of my references have I run across the correct color to paint the hangar deck. Someone suggested white, both for the walls and floor, but this doesn't sound right to me. Anybody out there have better intel? Kelly Quirk -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Jens H. Brandal" Subject: Kirov kit I wasn't aware of the fact that there was a kit available - my issue of FMS arrived a couple of days later (we get out issues of FSM a month later here in Norway). As ca. ?54 or $100, can anyonw say what the kit looks like? Good and bad points? Jens -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: jpoutre@lehman.com (Joseph Poutre) Subject: 1/700 Modern Iowa class To Rusty White at Flagship: While a conversion kit for, say, the Fujimi 1/700 Iowa class BB would be nice, it is an involved conversion, and would require much cutting off of parts and filling of holes. (Plus the Fujimi has several deficiencies that need correcting.) I have also heard (ah, rumors!) that someone is releasing with a 1/700 modern Iowa class next year, which would be great timing with the Missouri, New Jersey (soon!) and Wisconsin becoming museums over the next couple years. I personally would like a conversion set for the Vietnam era NJ, (either 1/700 or 1/350) though I would recommend market research before creating one to prevent total sales of one. :-) To Les Dorr, who wrote: >> I *think* there was a 1:700 modern N.J. at one time by Revell, but haven't seen it offered by anyone. << Revell made a 1/720 1980s USS NJ in th 1980s, but it looks like someone took an old NJ model and an article in something like Popular Mechanics or AvLeak and created the model before the Big J was relaunched. The model is basically accurate in shape, but needs many details added and all the weapons (except the main turrets and maybe the Tomahawk ABLs) replaced. I have one; I picked up a Skywave E-9 WWII set and E-1 modern US weapons set, and will piece together a PE set from a WWII battleships set and a modern US equipment set. The hull and basic superstructure are excellent with an accurate full hull, though they include four 4-bladed props, while two Iowas' two inboard props are five-bladed. If you find one and have reasonable skills, a few bucks to spend and a good reference, it'll build a great model. Joe Poutre -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Andrew Baines" Subject: RE: Carpathia Hello! The Carpathia was sunk, off the coast of Ireland I think, during the first world war. Captain Arthur Rostron went on to serve on the Cunard lines' Mauretania, the sister ship of the Lusitania, which was also lost during the first world war. As for a model, I do not believe that there has ever been one made, which is a great pity.I have searched high and low and not found any trace of one. I think that the main problem is that there is so little information on the ship. No plans exist and any photos are either too close or too far away to give any deck detail. This is also the problem when attemting to scratch build the ship, I along with many other people have started to gather information for this project but have had to give up. Who knows, there may be someone somewhere with the information needed to build a model. Lets hope so! Andrew -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: Mark Seitz Subject: Carpathia Greg, The Carpathia was sunk during WWI, torpedoed by a U-Boat I believe. I'm sure you can get further particulars from someone on this list, the amount of knowledge contained here is truly amazing. Cheers, Mark -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: Doc Data Subject: Bending PE I found in working with PE that using the edge of a piece of glass as a bending guide gave me the best bends. It has a very sharp edge and being able to see though it is a big help in getting the bend in the right place. However, bending pieces with triangular shaped sides into 3 dimensional object, like a pyramid shaped pedestal for example, presents a different set of problem. So, what do you use to get your best bends? How do you handle bending a small piece with triangular shaped sides? Doc Data -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: Bart Purvis Subject: Plans for Java or Sumatra Hi Guys, I am an RC warship combat modeler and am searching for plans, in any scale, of the Dutch cruisers Java or Sumatra. Does anyone have any leads? Thanks in advance, Bart Purvis -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: Michael Eisenstadt Subject: HMS Javelin Chris: Sorry, can't be of much help here. I have two photos of HMS Javelin dating to 1941. One photo from the U.S. National Archives shows her in a zany admiralty disruptive type scheme (apparently AP 507A, AP 507C, and B5), and the other from the U.S. Naval Institute shows her in a one-off light gray/black scheme (Alan Raven did a work-up of this scheme which was published in Plastic Ship Modeler, issue 1997/4, p. 33). I don't know if Javelin was still wearing either of these schemes in mid-1942. Maybe some of the other folks who "lurk about" this web site could help? Best wishes and good luck!
