Campbell" Subject: lawyer modelers It seems that ship modeling is converting a lot of lawyers to human beings and getting them to give up their evil ways. The majority of those heard from bill themselves as "ex" lawyers. Can we start a recruiting drive for liberals and conservatives? Maybe we can bring some sanity to the political arena. Denis Campbell -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Gene Larson Subject: Re: Modified Parts Jens H. Brandal Wrote: >> What is the law on using kit parts as a basis for detailed and/or converted parts? etc. << Now you are going to start another long thread - probably healthy however. Below is the Mariner's Museum criteria for the 2000 Ship Model Competition. There is no gray area. Either it is scratch or it is not. Other competitions may very well have different rules. So if it is scratch or not depends on the criteria in place for an event, competition, or the like. However, The Mariner's Museum competition does set the standard which is difficult to argue with. Why go to all the work to heavily modify a commercial part when it probably is easier to start from "scratch"? Besides, the commercial white metal parts probably have lead in them - a very bad situation. (See articles on this subject also on the NRG web site). The following is copied from the NRG web site "Scratch Building Criteria": QUOTE Mariners' Museum Criteria Scratch Built. No manufactured items except cordage, chain, and such fastenings as pins and nails. Such materials as dimensioned lumber, sheet metal, tubing, wire, and milled shapes are allowed as raw material. Photo-etched, laser-cut, cast, or similar parts mechanically or chemically duplicated by others from the entrant's original master or pattern, shall be considered as scratchbuilt. Semi-Scratchbuilt Models based on scratch built hulls. Fittings designed and produced by others. Kit Built Models based on commercial kits or hulls. With or without the addition of other commercial fittings or scratchbuilt parts. END QUOTE Please do not pick this criteria apart. It is fixed in concrete for 2000. The MM competition has been running every fifth year - almost - since 1980, and the best of the best enter and are willing to accept these rules. Are there, dare I say it, any physicists out there in SMML land? To Mike Czibovic: Yes, you are a hard core Yamatoholic. Which kit did you get? I'm eyeballing one of the big ones too. You have the Anatomy book and from what I've heard there's nothing out there that's even close for us. Here's a web site that has some intersting analysis on the Yamato. http://www.skypoint.com/members/jbp/baddest.htm And a site in the same place that has a little info on the ship (nothing new if you have the Anatomy book) and links to the rest of the site. http://www.skypoint.com/members/jbp/yamato_c.htm Overall I really like this site...great info on all aspects of the IJN. This site probably has a picture of every class in the IJN, what kits are avalilable and what ships are in each class. Using this info I found out that Tamiya offers a 1/700 kit of the sister ship of one of the destroyers escorting the Yamato on her last mission (the kit is of the Hibiki). Cheers Mike Connelley -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "R.S. Millar" Subject: OOPS Hi everyone: A quick question. I have embarked on a fairly lengthy crusade. Currently working on Tamiya CVN65. About 50% complete, with hangar deck add-in, etc. Looking good, for me. Part of the plan is to add a BB in the display case. My wife just came home all proud (God bless her) for having found a Tamiya Missouri on sale at a local hobby shop. Didn't have the heart to tell her I really need New Jersey - besides, they look the same to her! Question 1. If I add the GMM NEW JERSEY set to Missouri, do I get a believable ship? Question 2. If not, anyone want to trade? The kit is two hours old, in shrink. I'm in San Diego area. Last part. As a REAL crusade, I'm also working on Nichimo Yamato (my 'background' project). I've had no luck finding "Yamato, Anatomy of a Ship" - does anyone know where I might find a copy? Thanks! Randy -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Foeth" Subject: Re: Graf Spee's Green As Dan Jones pointed out that the green should be grey, I did some researching, and I believe he is right: The pattern is a dark gray, so disregard my former statement that it was green. The hull is again darker (squirel grey, hell grau RAL7000 ?) than the superstructure (silver grey, hell grau, RAL7001). The darker grey could be RAL 7016 dunkelgrau (Anthracite grey) or RAL 7024 (Graphite grey), but I cannot find a conclusive sourse right now. I have several pictures of the camo-sceme, if needed. It's been sitting in the "to build" pile until just recently. I never meant to imply that the kit was in the bargain basement category. As I recall the kit was at least $25 less expensive than BWN 1/350 Northampton. Given the lack of crispness and lack of instructions, I thought it a fair comparison. Any word yet on what the CW Alaska looks like? Frank -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Ron & Rusty Watson Subject: uss cape st. george cruiser My son is on the "Cape" and I was wanting to get a model of his ship to surprise him. Does this model exist and if not when? Thanks for any help you may provide. Thanks Ron Watson, Mt.
