Didn't have the heart to tell her I really need New Jersey - >besides, they look the same to her! Question 1. If I add the GMM NEW JERSEY set to Missouri, do I get a believable ship? << Your ship will look good, but will not be historically correct, because the accessories ie radars, helipad railings etc... are very different to how Mighty Mo appeared at the time the Tamiya Missouri kit depicts her. This kit depicts her as she was in the mid/late 40's. The NJ brass doesn't become useable until around the late 60's, early 70's fit. I would suggest that with the amount of time/work the Tamiya/GMM combo will take you, you would be better off to save them until you have the right brass. Secondly, the way Mo is depicted in the kit is not "historically" useable in a diorama with your Big E. They are at two differant times in history. For instance, Mo had her 20mm guns/tubs removed some 11 years before Enterprises Keel was laid down in 1958. The NJ kit is a much better place to start building Mo as she was with Big E. The beauty of your situation is, you can now go buy The NJ kit, sneak it home, and put it in Mo's box, build your diorama, and when your done with that, you can order some GMM brass for your other Mo kit which has been in your stash for ages, and you can conveniently "forget" where it came from:-) Greg (Listmaster - SMML) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Ives100@aol.com Subject: Re: Lawyers (and other careers) >> I'm an engineering-physics student at Santa Clara University and wouldn't do anything else, so I guess I'm among the engineers. Are there, dare I say it, any physicists out there in SMML land? << How about a Ph.D. microbiologist? I'm the principal scientist in a bacterial genetics and physiology unit at a major pharmaceutical company. My primary interest in ship modelling is submarines, and no, there is no good explanation for it. The NJ and Missouri are almost identical except for some small differences in the superstructure. If you're not too picky it'll easily pass for a Missourii Rusty White Flagship Models Inc. http://www.okclive.com/flagship/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Kevin Wenker Subject: Re: Cape St George Cruiser DML makes a vertical lauch Tico class cruiser. Some minor details would need to be added, numbers changed, and name added. It is a nice kit - especially with a Gold Medal Models photoetch package. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: YHSAIO@aol.com Subject: HMAS Sydney I hope Mike got the photocopy of the Sydney photo. It seems like photos of the Sydeny are as rare as hen's teeth. Does anybody in Oz have good photos of the Sydney in the camo scheme Mike mentions? I have seen one photo in Morris's book on RN and Commonwealth cruisers (the photocopy I mentioned); however the two articles in Warship on the Sydney and her sisters have Perth in her camo scheme. Does the Australian War Memorial provide a photo reproduction service? Also I was wondering how a modern light cruiser could allow an auxiliary cruiser which probably had no modern fire control system to blow her out of the wate, considering the fact that the Sydney was a battle hardened ship with extensive service in the Med against the Royal Italian Navy. The Warship article on the Sydney mentions a possible cover-up concerning her loss. Can anyone enlighten us? As Fox Mulder is fond of saying, "the truth is out there." Anway, I checked amazon.com and they said it's outof print but they can try to get it for you. Wouldn't hurt to ask. Their site also said that Skulski is coming out with a Anatomy of the Ship book on the Fuso, for those of you who like her. Amazon.com is selling it for about $15 less than the list price. If you're building the 1/200 Yamato and the 1/350 Enterprise you're either mad to not a mere mortal like the rest of us. In general, what's the best way to get in contact with Flagship Models? I want to get their 1/400 surface ship propeller set but they haven't responded to my emails. If some one out there in SMML land has this and would like to sell/trade, I'm all ears. Cheers Mike -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Björn Bäcklund" Subject: Re: Modified Parts Gene Larson wrote: >> Why go to all the work to heavily modify a commercial part when it probably is easier to start from "scratch"? << I do most of my modelling in plastic, and personally I rather take something that has the basic shapes of the thing I want to build rather than start a project all from scratch. But the question remains: What is the law when using kit parts as a base for a model. For instance, if one would take a hull from a plastic kit, shorten it and perhaps make it lower and shave off all detailing. Then scratch building the rest of the ship into something completely different than what one started with. Then what. I wouldn't hesitate if I was building one ship for my one use, but I don't think I would dare the same thing if I was going to produce some kits that I was going to sell. I have notice a lot of postings seem to wrap around ie: Instead of the separator lines being in one line like this: ---------------------------------- They wrap around like this: ------------------------- --------- because the column widths on everybodys screens are different. Is it possible we could have a concensus on how many characters per line should appear so everybody's SMML is neat and pleasant to read? Does anybody have any other suggestions on how we can make SMML better?
