I'd apply future just to the areas I'm going to decal, but not sure the finish would match after over spraying. So...any ideas? << That's exactly what I do except I airbrush the small areas where the decals go. You can then feather the edges and it will then match nicely when the flat coat is applied. If you're still nervous about the future showing through, thin it down with some alcohol and water and spray a thin coat over the entire model. One thin coat won't hurt. I am wondering what the status of this kit is. I paid for this IN FULL back in August, with a deposit earlier. If this kit is not forthcoming, I feel I should be entitled to a refund PLUS INTEREST. The kit was promised as being released in mid-Septemeber (hence, the august pay-off) and is now 6 weeks late. Does anybody here know the source of the delay? << Delays are a part of the business. I know Steve Wiper and I know he has a commercial caster produce his models. What MAY have happened is the caster MAY be the hold up. If Steve got the test shots and saw some problems that needed to be corrected, it would take some time to do that. On the other hand, Steve has no control over his casters schedule. This happens to me on a regular basis here at Flagship. I have no control over my photo-etchers schedule either. I get in line and hope it's short. Try not to be too upset if this is the problem. My first kit (1/35 Close In Weapon System) is due here very soon and I refuse to give any release date for this very reason. The reason is I'm having a commercial caster do mine as well (advice given to me by Steve). There could be unforeseen problems there. Another potential problem that I mentioned earlier is the PE. Even if you have all the parts, you still need the PE before sending the kit. Remember, the photo-etcher has their schedule. I'm not making excuses for anyone. I'm just pointing out the scheduling problems he could be having (IF there is a problem). I have adopted the policy of not releasing anything until I have the kit in my hands. >> Is the museum at fault for not paying the manufacturer, Classic Warships? << Precisely (that is IF they didn't pay CW). I don't know if the Salem is available yet. If it is, the problem is with the people you paid (providing the kit is available). >> Is Classic Warships at fault for not delivering a product that has been prepaid? << Here is Steve's phone number and address. Address your complaints to him. His phone number is (520) 748-2992. However, if it was promised on a specific date the model should have been shipped. Also, be a little understanding (it sounds like you have). A phone call could easily clear the whole thing up. >> Is the Post Office at fault for losing it in the mail? What's the story here?? << The post office is at fault only if the package was insured by the sender. If Steve says it was sent (and it was insured) and it never made it to the shop where you bought it, then Steve is responsible for replacing the kit (and contacting the PO). The shop should have let him know it wasn't received. Basically, start where you bought the model and check backwards. Either way, if the kit was sent, the shop where you paid your money is responsible for delivering the kit. You paid your money and deserve the kit. First, are there plans or drawings available of the ship? << David: For plans, kits, books, supplies, fittings, and so on, check out "The Floating Drydock" at: http://www.usbusiness.com/drydock Seaways' Ships in Scale magazine's web site, with many vendor links, can be found at: http://www.seaways.com The largest ship's plans commercial outlet is Taubman Plans Service at: http://www.seaways.com/vendors/abe.html And let's not overlook one of the finest sites available to the ship model builder, The Nautical Research Guild's marvelous web site at: http://www.Naut-Res-Guild.org This site has a vendor list which will blow your boots off. Ever since I started reading sea stories, have always been fascinated by this ship and the HMS Gloworm, almost as much as HMS Compass Rose. Snorkers, Good Oh! Only true believers will understand this last. Gene S. Katz -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Douglas Martin" Subject: Internet Shopping cont My first purchases of kits and books over the Internet were from WEM, although I had many years ago been 'forced' to go mail order to get 1/700 Warships from the London shops, Hannants, H J Walker etc. I've imported from the USA and Japan and as Caroline says, beware the VAT, Customs Duty, Postal 'opening fee', etc, which will add approximately 35% to the original US price as an example. The only exception to the Customs taxes is on books and magazines, so if you are wise, ensure they are costed separately on any import of substantial value, or you could end up with a bill there as well. Small purchases can/will come in 'tax' free, there is a tax free allowance on postal imports, not much, so anything over £20 is likely to attract duties (not always as it turns out but that is another tale....). If you buy a 1/350 Enterprise, expect the Full Monty of charges, its a wee bit obvious, and any Customs chappie is bound to have a 'peek' at a box that size..... Christmas time may be a 'better' time to import, expect the Crowns Servants and others to be 'other wise occupied', the situation is, expect a bill of around 35% for imports into the UK...if you dont get one, say ta very much. I think for one off kits, something you've always wanted, a book, kit or otherwise, try the WWW, so far I've not been disappointed, and our friends in Japan are quite keen to 'sell', the one I frequent has an 'English' site (Rainbow Ten). Douglas (Of course this doesn't mean I've actually built anything yet.....) PS. The pics on the 'Warship.simplenet' site of Alabama and Massachusettes are first class. Now why do the Hasegawa kits not have that starboard crane, I've often wondered where it was? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Mark Kwasnycia Subject: Rawalpindi' action I agree fully that the chances of a 6-inch doing any appreciable damage to a Scharnhorst class ship is extremely unlikely, but there was always the possibility that some damage that could jeopardize the German ships operational plans (such as hitting the bridge, and killing or injuring the Command staff, etc.) that could have prevented the Scharnhorst and her consort from getting loose into the Atlantic. The German battle group's being satisfied with an AMC as the only prize of an Atlantic breakout seemingly beyond belief. As you said, I've read several reports of crew members of both German ships being saddened by the engagement; if the action had been against a "real warship", and the retreat not made upon Newcastle's arrival, it is certain that their reactions would have been far different. Is it possible (the ships breaking off upon Newcastle's arrival) that this was an early example of the orders "not to risk" the warships, as evidenced in the Bismarck action, and later in the Scharnhorst's final operation ? As for your suggestion that smaller freighters would have proven to be more efficient AMC's you're probably correct. The problem was (in my opinion), ship availability. Whereas every freighter, large, or small was worth it's weight in gold for it's carrying capacity, liners were a different story. The faster examples were destined to become troop carriers, but the majority of the 20 to 30 year old ships were basically unused tonnage, until the necessity for large scale amphibious forces were realized. Generally, the primary consideration was seeking, as the majority of the patrol areas were located in notoriously stormy parts of the world. Mark Kwasnycia -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: YHSAIO@aol.com Subject: Re: Pacific Front Hobbies To all SMMLers: I wouldn't worry much about Pacific Front Hobbies and Bill Gruner. I had a problem with Hi-Mold's Richilieu which I ordered from PFH. My kit was missing a part and Bill Gruner advised as to how to get a replacement part I got the replacement part today. Some of the stuff stocked by PFH, especially the Japanese kits, are fairly hard to find and there is probably a backorder logjam for them (ever try to order from Hobbylink Japan? Their backlog is even worse and they are closer to the source). It's best to order via e-mail, as Bill Gruner is prompt in answering them (usually within 2-3 days). So relax, your kits will arrive. Yunchi Hsaio -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: YHSAIO@aol.com Subject: HMS Kelly again Here are some more questions aboout HMS Kelly that I have (I'll wait for the Snyder/Short paintchips for a precise Mountbatten Pink). (1) Did Kelly have her pennant number on the hull when she was lost? If so, what was the colo(u)r? (2) I'm assuming that Kelly had all of the modifications to her AA as per wartime regs. The 4" gun should be in place (thanks Caroline) of the aft TT. How about the Oerlikons in the bridge wings and around the searchlight? Also, any idea as to whether Kelly received her 285/286 radar fit? Hi Gang, First of all, I would like to officially welcome Jeff Herne (SMML Archive Master) to SMML. (YAY!!!!) Jeff will be running the Archive, which IS DEFINATELY on the net already - (I just had a look, one of those "has to be seen to be believed" things). The archive is not officially open for business yet, I will keep you all posted, we are polishing up the back issues, working on a FAQ, and hopefully getting up some photo's to start the SMML Picture Gallery rolling. As you already know, SMML's home is on The Warship Page: http://warship.simplenet.com/ At this stage I estimate the archive will be open in 1 to 2 weeks. Stay tuned for more juicy details soon:-)) Greg Lee (SMML - Listmaster) Jeff Herne mailto:jherne@hotmail.com (SMML - Archive Master) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: CA139JOHNF@aol.com Subject: Re: USS Salem Model Hello List Members, I would like to inform those list members that there has been a delay in the shipment of the USS Salem kits to the Museum. This kit has so much detail that some technical problems needed to be solved. These problems have been rectified and shipment is expected this month. Mr. Corey has been contacted and offered a full refund. I am sorry that he chose this forum to make his displeasure known. I have stated before and do so again here, All money paid toward the advance reservation/purchase of this model kit is being held in an escrow account. Nothing has been or will be paid out to anyone until we are notified that the models are ready to ship to us. I will not go into any more detail regarding the business arraingment between the USS Salem Model Dept. as this is not the forum for such discussion. I again apoligize to the list members for this intrusion on what we feel is a wonderful modeling resource.
