There are thousands of people standing in the centre of towns and cities all over Australia, remembering the sacrifices of countless thousands of people in order that we can have the freedoms we enjoy and take for granted today. And the willingness of so many today to serve our society and to stand in harms way to protect us. We must never forget them. We must never forget how ready they were to risk everything for their fellow Australians. And how willing their mothers, sisters and girlfriends were to endure great hardships in their support. "Convoy to Scatter" (could be by Broom also) "Great Liners at War" Patrick Stevens Publications(?) What I need, of course, is author, publisher, ISBN (if any), date of publication etc. Happy modelling. Regards, Chris -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "RLOCKIE" Subject: Knuckles The knuckle is caused by a change of slope angle of the hull side. On PoW, the hull side is close to vertical at the top where it leaves the deck but the forward part then makes an angle with this where it slopesdown towards the keel at a shallower angle, as opposed to being a continuous curve from deck to keel. It is much easier to draw in cross section than to describe, as my efforts probably make clear. A similar knuckle is present on some (but not all) of the British Southampton class cruisers as I recollect. Robert Lockie -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Sheridan, John" Subject: Re: USS Massachusetts >> Today I had the great pleasure of visiting the USS Massachusetts. As has een mentioned on SMML before, she is in drydock and undergoing some long-overdue repair work. I am writing up an article for Sea Classics about the repair work and was able to get into the drydock and walk around and under the ship. She is a massive thing - best appreciated from under the props. << I think it would be really interesting if you could give us a description of your visit under the hull. What condition is she really in ?!?!? >> I have a load of pics if anyone would like, I can scan a few in for the group. << If you do not have a website ready, I would be interested in hosting the site on my website. >> I wonder - is the 1/350 resin kit out yet? I can't wait to start! << MB Models / Blue Water Navy makes an excellent kit of the Massachusetts in 1/350th scale resin. I ma working on it right now as a matter-of-fact. I have finished the Hull (I Modeled the full hull version) and am in the process of painting the completed hull. Does anyone have a photo I can borrow and/or scan ?!?!? I need it for a project I am working on. Hreachmack book? I've answered a number of questions from different SMML subscribers about certain parts of this publication, and I'm finding I disagree with more of the data in his book than I agree with. Personally, I do not own the book, I guess this is a good thing... I can't wait to start! << Take a look at the Warship review of the Blue Water Navy USS Massachusetts. You can see it at: http://warship.simplenet.com/BWNMass.htm And while you are in the neighborhood take a look at the Warship photo tour of USS Massachusetts at: http://warship.simplenet.com/Mass.htm And don't forget to visit her sister ship USS Alabama at: http://warship.simplenet.com/Alabama.htm These two photo tours should give you all the detailing information you will need to build a stunning 1/350 scale USS Massachusetts. Hood Hi everyone, In the last bulletin someone mentioned that the Italeri 1/720 H.M.S. Hood is to be released next year. This is great news. I know everyone waxes lyrical about the Tamiya kit, (and well deserved it is too), but I must say that the Italeri people have done a marvellous job with their 1920's version. The small part mouldings, (such as secondary armament and boats etc.), are wonderful, and the hull and superstructure detail is quite superb. This kit really does capture the look of this fine vessel as she was early in her career. Not only this, you can build her as a full hull or waterline model. The model is priced modestly, and you'll really get your money's worth. (No, I don't work for them!!) I've heard that they have re-released the 600 Canberra, and the Mauretania is going to be re-released next year. I'd appreciate it greatly. thanks, Steve -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: YHSAIO@aol.com Subject: IJN Linoleum I have a question about IJN ships and linoleum (possibly covered before). I am currently building Tamiya's Yubari and need info about her decks. Tamiya's kit represents Yubari circa 1944, when most IJN ships were stripped of their linoleum, but since she was not considered a first line unit, the possibility exists that she still retained her linoleum decks, as in the case of Aoba into 1945. Problem is that most models of IJN cruisers still show lino decks, even those models of late war ships in a 1944-45 fit (how many models of Tone/Chikuma have been built with the full radar array, late war AA, and brown decks?). While we are on the subject of linoleum decks, perhaps somebody (Paolo Pizzi? We need your help!) can do a chart with info on IJN cruisers/destroyers and whether they had linoleum after 1943-44 (personally I think the brown decks are nice-looking, but we do want our models to be the best representations possible to satisfy those who pick nits:-) Yunchi Hsaio -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: Duane Fowler Subject: USCGC Eagle Railings Concerning the USCGC Eagle, WIX-327: I don't know of any kits in 1/400 scale. Minicraft and Imai make a 1/350 scale kit which are apparently from the same tool but the Minicraft includes the lower hull while the Imai is a waterline kit. Unfortunately, the box art of the Minicraft kit refers to the ship as the "USS Eagle"! Ugh, how insulting! Revell Germany used to make a 1/250 scale USCGC Eagle and it still can be found in some stores or at swap meets. There are also a couple of wooden ship kits of the Eagle, but they are not very good. As to the railings: the quarterdeck and forecstle have four bar ralings. the top rail is thicker with white below and varnished wood on top. There is a single capble suspended about a foot over the gunnels midship. And atop the deckhouses there are two and three bar ralings. If you have the 1/350 kits, there are several railing kits that would do from Tom's, GMM, and others. If you have the Revell 1/250 kit, you may have to make your own railings. GMM has 1/200 two and three bar railings, but I don't think it would fit well. There are several USCGC Eagle websites around for reference. Since Aussies use the English dating system (this has nothing to do with women in pubs, BTW) and most of us use the US system, I have decided to remove the date stamp from the Archive files. It also allows the computer to list the files numerically, since my machine was having a real tough time with the files in their original form. The 1st 100 issues should be up and running by tomorrow.
