How does someone in the USA find this kit? PFH had at one time imported the kit, but didn't have it in stock whenever I asked about it. Thanks, Art Nicholson -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Sanartjam@aol.com Subject: Re: Make a Signal Hi, "Make a Signal" by Jack Broome was first published in 1955, and was reprinted a few years ago. It was listed in the most recent book list from Maritime Books at 15.95 pounds. I have a 1955 edition, but it does not show an ISBN number. There was also a book called "Make Another Signal," also by Jack Broome, but it is not an all-new book; it seems to contain all or most of the material in "Make a Signal," and I didn't get the impression there was much in it that was new. "Make a Signal" is a great book! One of my favorites. Art Nicholson -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: RLapadura@aol.com Subject: Opinions on BWN IJN Aoba or Furutaka Hi All, Title speaks for itself. I'm contemplating purchaseing the kit, but can find no info on it. Has anyone built one or knows of any pictures of buildups? Thanks in advance, Bob LaPadura P.S. Belated thanks to those who responded to my Balao color question last month. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: fleetnut@juno.com (Stephen C Gustafson) Subject: Chris Drage Book Want List Chris, Both To Make a Signal and Convoy to Scatter are written by Capt. Jack Broome. Get on the net and check www.abebooks.com and you will find copies of both available at several locations. I have no info for you on the third title but I full expect Dan Jones to charge in here any minute with the necessary info. Best wishes, Steve Gustafson -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "T. J. KOENIGSFELD" Subject: Titanic's present color Hello, I am in the midst of building a wrecked titanic model using the revell model, for my aquarium. It is starting to look good, except for one problem. I need a color that resembles the titanic now, under the sea. If anybody knows of any paint I can use that is not harmful to fish and is the color of the Titanic presently under the sea, please tell me the color and brandname. Thanks for everything T. J. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: fleetnut@juno.com (Stephen C Gustafson) Subject: Archives Jeff & Greg: Great going on the Archives site. I've subscribed for about six months and haven't had the nerve to ask for the previous six months worth of SMML. This is terrific, and it's great to see how it has grown in only a year. Let me be the first to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY (I know I'm early, but what the heck). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Mike Leonard" Subject: 1/700 Aircraft Category >> I'd love to see an IPMS aircraft category for 700 scale. << And rest assured the judges would be there to scrutinize them with microscopes and forceps instead of their usual magnifying glasses and dental mirrors! : ) Mike -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Mike Leonard" Subject: Re: Books Ray Lagomasino wrote: >> Some outstanding books have been mentioned in several SMML Vol's. A couple of books I'd like to add are two by Mr. W.G. Winslow: "The Ghost That Died at Sundra Strait" --the heroic story of USS HOUSTON (CA-30), and "The Fleet the Gods Forgot"--the story of the U.S. Asiatic fleet and the ABDA command during the first few bloody months of the Pacific War. << And any list of books on the USS Houston and the Java Sea would also have to include"The Last Battle Station", by Duane Schultz. Out of print, but old book dealers list it from time to time. Mike -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Mike Leonard" Subject: Re: FSM Survey Recently there was mention here of the annual Fine Scale Modeler reader survey: What new kits would we like to see? Since resin seems to have overtaken injection-molded plastic for most ship models, I'm having a hard time coming up with good (i.e., realistic) ideas. It would be nice to see Tamiya follow up their Fletcher with a 1/350 Gearing, for example, but I think it would be hard to convince the major manufacturers to produce subjects that have already been done in resin. I'd vote for a reissue of the big Revell Fl***r class, or even a half-size version of it in 1/144 (not a traditional ship model scale, of course). This might be the one you're after. He also wrote "Convoy Is To Scatter". The "... Signal" book was fist published by William Kimber and Company Limited in 1973. Futura Publications had an edition of it in 1977. ISBN: 0 8600 7462 5. Yorktown (1/350 scale from Blue Water) into a 1942 U.S.S. Enterprise? Any help or references are much appreciated! Joe & Adrienne Norris -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: "Alan Lindstrom" Subject: pp/Revell Arizona Thanks for all the response on what pp length. I got curious about it when I noted in one of my books that the length of the Warspite was 600 feet (no indication as to wl, pp, oa). That didn't seem right since I thought it was around 646 feet. So I looked in another reference and it listed the pp length as 600 feet. I assumed that pp was similar to wl, but when I looked at the profile of the Warspite, I couldn't figure out where the other 46 feet went, so I figured that pp wasn't the same as wl. On another note, I was looking at the SMML archives on Warship today and noted that early on there was a lot of discussion of the Revell 1/426(429) Arizona kit. Did anyone ever try to deal with the fact that the hull bulges are missing? They were added in the 1930ish reconstruction and added 9 feet or so to the beam. Also, I have seen photos of the Arizona just after it was sunk and it had at least one raft hanging from C or D turret. Does anyone know how many rafts the Arizona was carrying at this time and where they were located? Thanks, Alan Lindstrom -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From: RCClem@aol.com Subject: Re: Admiral Graf Spee Tonight on The Learning Channel was a reasonably well done hour-long show on the Graf Spee. An underwater archeologist wove some historical archive movie clips with his attempts to dive on the wreck. One thing that I had not heard before was that its stern was broken clear from the rest of the ship. I seem to remember that other German capital ships also seemed to have lost their sterns. Was it the BB Bismark in the Atlantic and another cruiser that was bombed in a German harbor? Was this an inherent weakness of German ship designers of that time? I would greatly appreciate any photos that you don't mind scanning for me, since there is usually very little documentation below the waterline for ships like this. Please let me know if this is possible...... via the list, or direct to the postmark above. Many Thanks James Morley -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 17) From: CHRIS DRAGE Subject: Brassed off.......... Hi all SMMeLies, Many thanks to of you who responded to my book info request - especially Gordon! I should have remembered to use MXBookfinder!!!! If you don't know that site it is: http://www.mxbf.com Another one for you..... Anyone who has tried 0.006" brass rodding for their rigging will know that it is excellent for stays but just a little too coarse for aerial wires. What is required is 0.004" or 0.003" brass rod. Can anyone locate a source? There are several folks who are quite anxious to get hold of some of this elusive material! Perhaps the chap who mentioned brass wire several volumes ago could suggest where to pick up such fine filaments. Unfortunately, Walthers can't help! I have tried unwinding 0.1mm stranded insulated wire of which each strand is 0.004" but it's a b****r to straighten in order to make it usable. All suggestions most welcome. p.s. Would Chris Hughes contact me again. I have tried to respond, Chris, but it bounces back everytime! Just a short note to let you know the Archive of Back issues and the Picture Post is Now Open. Although all the issues are not yet available, the remainder will be added quiet rapidly. During this process, Jeff and I hope to establish some sort of FAQ sheet to prevent "Repeat" questions from new readers. To Get There - Go Here! http://warship.simplenet.com/ Another suggestion I received from a reader was that everybody on the list should mail in their name, city and country, so we can put up a list on the Site showing how many countries SMML is going to, what cities, and list of everybody who participates to make SMML what it is. I think this is a cool idea - what do ya'll think?
