Another manufacturer in China. I haven't check out the quality. How far it would be interested in the State and European Market? Best Wishes! Hi Guys, With our 1/700 Warspite and Barham kits now looming large on the horizon, we are looking to extend coverage of the QE class by producing kits of the following vessels: Queen Elizabeth 1941 Malaya 1943 Valiant 1943 Whilst most of the research is done and dusted, there are a few areas that remain mysteries, and we wonder if there's anyone out there that can provide the answers to the following questions: Are there plan views avaiable anywhere of the mast platforms and starfish of the above ships at the dates in question? What was the modified boat fit for Malaya and Valiant once catapults were removed? When the catapults etc. were removed, were the resulting trenches in the deck planked, plated or what? Any assistance gratefully received. Dave and Caroline Carter -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Caroline Carter" Subject: Re: Shanghai Dragon Invincible Hi David So, is Dragon planning on going forward with the project anyway, without Revell? Or are they going to wait until Revell comes up with some more money? Also, is this kit a full-hull or waterline model? According to Gary Au, the kit HAS been released by Shanghai Dragon (we've got one on the way from Gary at this time for inspection). Falk Pletscher says he has talked with Revell Germany and that it is due for a UK release in December. If it is an accurate representation, then our photoetched brass set will fit it... if it is not, then I will probaby cry! >> Interesting to see what happened to the ex-Skywave partially-completed Kirov tooling........ << >> Caroline, if you don't tell us what happened to the Kirov tooling, you will be marked forever as a shameless tease. ;-) << Hmmm.. seems this is how rumours get started, like the message I just received off a Frenchman about a Tamiya 1/350 CV6.... You can find GMM on the NAVIS website -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Morley, James (London)" Subject: Iowa conversion I put a post in yesterday about painting...... with reference to the same project (Tamiya Missouri converted to Iowa), I am using the Classic Warships conversion set, and so far so good (although as this was my first experience working with resin it hasn't been THAT straightforward). What I have noticed is that this set is missing the prominent Bow AA gun mantle which was substantially different from the 1st built (Iowa), to the last completed (Missouri) of this class. I know that Toms do a similar conversion set do they, by any chance, include the reworked Bow cupola? It seems a very strange omission from an otherwise excellently thought out set. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: RN Colors Michael: Patience, patience. As soon as our second set of USN colors is released (all colors now on hand, we just have to paint and affix the chips), we'll be starting on a set of 27 RN WW2 chips. While we had hoped to have those out by the end of the year, I think that a more realistic estimate is probably March or April '99. At that point, you won't have to worry about FS equivalents. You can just mix your favorite model paints to match the chips. An Axis set (Regia Marina, Kreigsmarine, IJN) will follow. Fail" Subject: Nantucket Lightship I am retired from the U.S. Coast Guard and about to retire from my second life as a computer programmer and pursue what I have wanted to do all my life; build ship models. Many years ago I built a plastic model of the NANTUCKET lightship which I belive was made by Lindberg. I lost it somewhere along the line and would like to build it again. Can anyone help me find an unbuilt replacement for it. Also there was a model by Revell of the USCGC TANEY and/or USCGC CAMPBELL that I am trying to find. The TANEY (now a museum in Baltimore) has sold out of the model and says they cannot get any more of them. Thanks in advance John Fail, QMC USCG (retired) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "javelin" Subject: Re: German Naval Colors Thanks to Mr. John Snyder regarding the information provided for axis naval ship colors. I, for one, would be interested in axis color paint chips for reference purposes. I would also be interested in WWI color references. (It can be frustrating to put so much effort into detailing historical accuracy into a German warship only to paint it with "best-guess" colors). Thanks again. Marc. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: tomkremer Subject: More German sterns! Dave writes: >> I had an interesting discussion with a friend about German ships losing their sterns. He mentioned something very interesting, that perhaps it was no coincidence that the sterns of three large German ships were hit by torpedos. Could the Royal Navy have been using a sound-guided homing system in their torpedos? Is it at all feasable given the technology of the day? << Although acoustic homing torpedos were developed and used in WWII (most successfully by the Germans) the torpedo hits in question were all "conventional". I think that much of the speculation about possible design weakness in the German ships is equivilent to discussion about the bows of US cruisers in WWII... there was no major problem, it just happens that by chance a number of ships took hits there. LOTS of things come loose given a ton or so of explosive... it doesn't mean that the designs were faulty. Best regards, Tom Kremer -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Mike Leonard" Subject: RE: More Materials for Rigging At an IPMS show not long ago, I found some .0005" surgical steel wire for sale. It comes packaged in a tube, 50 strands of 18-inch wire for US$ 2. Great price! Available from: Walter Karg PO Box 7149 New Brunswick, NJ 08902-7149 USA Mike L -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: Tim Perry Subject: Fletcher PE sets I have been building a Tamiya 1:350 Fletcher as a first maritime model project for a while now, also using the GMM set which is excellent, but there is an awful lot more to add! Apart from the variations between vessels, I think the perforated structures under the searchlight platforms and gun tubs would benefit from the PE treatment, while the practice 5" loader needs to be fitted as well. The kit DC throwers need replacing, and the AA weapons need a lot of work to make them realistic, apart from shields, sights and shoulder rests, which are in the GMM set. Does anyone do a set of the more 'solid' parts that need replacing, in either resin or pewter/white metal? @d buy a set or two.... Cheers, Tim Perry Bristol, UK -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: Tim Perry Subject: Removing Molded Ladders Hi Felix, Apart from using a brand new blade in your scalpel or craft handle, I often use fine files ground to a sharp, as fine chisels. The most useful one I have is from a triangular section file, so it has some strength. You don't need a grinding wheel, and carborundum abrasive paper and a drop of oil will work very well. Tape the paper to a flat surface, put a drop of 3-in-1 oil or similar on the paper and carefully stroke the file tip back and forth across the abrasive. No need to push hard, it is more important to keep the angle steady. Use several different angles to shape the cutting edge you need. This way you can make as many cutting tools as you need, and a few more wipes on the abrasive will restore the cutting edge. While this might not be sheffield or Samurai quality cutlery, for plastic and resin the edge will cut more than adequately. This would be much easier to illustrate than describe! I will e-mail you a diagram of what I mean; anyone else want a copy, get in touch directly. Hope this is of use, Tim Perry -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: "Eleta S.Malewitz" Subject: Ship Model Shops Can anyone recommend good ship model shops in the Newport News/Chesapeake/Norfolk VA. USA area? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: John Snyder Subject: Catalog Items I just received the latest mailing from Phoenix Model Co., P.O. Box 15390, Brooksville FL 34609, phone (352) 754-8522, fax (352) 754-1882, and note that they have quite a bunch of ships listed in various scales for some pretty good prices. Lots of Revell, Heller, Tamiya (including the 1/350 Y****O for $47.19). They even show a 1/250 SHINANO by Doyusha for $164.99. I have no connection with Phoenix, just thought I'd pass the info along. John Snyder Snyder & Short Enterprises The Paint Guys -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From: John Snyder Subject: New Books I just received 2 new books by Gerhard Koop & Klaus-Peter Schmolke: Battleship Tirpitz, and Battleship Scharnhorst. Not a lot of text, but LOTS of photos and plans, plus camo patterns, and lots of photos of 1/100 models of both ships. Good reference material in softcover for not a lot of money. If anyone is interested, the Ship Model Society of Northern New Jersey are looking for a few good men. We meet in Madison, NJ, on the 4th Tuesday of the month, at 7pm. The club was, for a long time, dedicated to the wooden ship modeler, you know, the guys who bent the wood and carved their hulls...made what we we were doing look insignificant... At any rate, the doors have been opened, quite nicley, to all ship modelers, whether resin or plastic. Drop me an e-mail if you're interested in attending any of our meetings.
