It's a fascinating tale and it does settle another question: "Did FLETCHER class Destroyer ever operate in the Atlantic or Mediterranean?" The history of the "William D Porter" clearly shows they did, however briefly. Does anyone have any idea how she was dressed at this time? While I'am here, Many thanks to Greg for a well run and informative forum and a big Hi to Shane, who has a tough act to follow. Les Pickstock -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "RLOCKIE" Subject: KGV camouflage during Bismarck chase According to Warship 11, KGV carried an overall medium grey scheme from 02/1941 to 06/1942. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: Nationals SMML model build All: What Mike was suggesting was not a group entry (though that has its own appeal), but rather an effort by a number of modelers to build the same ship type in the same scale so as to force a split-out of that class, as is frequently seen in aircraft and armor but almost never in ships. Anyway, keep the answers and opinions coming, and I'll pass them along to Mike (who's not yet on the web or e-mail). Just seem anxious to know. thanks steve -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Rick Heinbaugh Subject: Re: LCM-3s Ed, I expected a flood of other answers so I sat on my hands, er, keyboard, too long. Plastic assets for LCMs: (All are probabably intended to be LCM6, due to their period...) **Skywave Japanese LST Miura (kit J15): 2 LCMs, 23x6.7mm, well deck too long & narrow, nice external detail, rudimentary hull bottom, kit costs ~25 - $30 **DML US Marine Amphibious Force (also in USS Tarawa LHA kit): 2 LCMs 24x6mm, detail more sparse, flat bottom, kit costs ~$10 **Imai _nasty_ USS Spruance kit, with set of landing craft poorly copied from DML above: 2 LCMs 23x5.5mm, very crude, very flat bottom, kit costs ~$10 **Skywave US/UK LST: no LCMs **Revell old USS Tarawa kit? I don't have one to check. Good luck, Rick Heinbaugh Seattle, WA -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Michael C. Smith" Subject: Re: Nationals SMMLer ship model build What about doing 1/700 scale Essex class carriers (not this year - maybe next)? Between the Hasegawa kit and the new Oriskany 1960's kit (and a few scratchbuilts out there) there are dozens of possibilities. There were 24 ships, half of which had two or three different appearances during the war, and another two or three after the war. The size is small enough to be feasible, but the differences are large enough that there's lot's of room for personal taste, i.e. I like the dazzle camo, someone else likes Navy Blue, someone else wants to do a battle-damaged Franklin, or a conversion to a 1951 Oriskany or a 1960's Lexington or Yorktown, or a mothballed Tarawa, etc. Just a thought, Michael Smith Marshall, Texas -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: James Corley Subject: Re: Nationals SMMLer ship model build >> Taking it to the fullest extent, how about a group entry showing all versions of the Fletchers in 1/350 scale! << There is already a way to do several variants, with either resin kits or conversions for the Tamiya kit. >> The second problem is getting everyone and their models to the Nationals. It never fails. Someone will either back out or an emergency will come up and you'll have hole in your entry. If that occurs, a model can be safely packed and mailed to a modeler who is definitely going to make it. It will take lots of frequent communication and coordination but I'll bet it can be done. << I am in Atlanta and I am driving to MCO by myself and as such would be willing to accept and hold any boxes that might need a courier. I would wait until I got to MCO to open the boxes (preventing further possible damage) and hope for the best. I am currently building a Tamiya with Tom's square bridge with the emergency AA refit in a Ms32/11d scheme.....had some problems with the conversion that had to be worked out but once I get some time and room I will be completeing this (hopefully in time for a local show in mid-January or the March regionals at the latest!) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: Greg Lee Subject: Important Announcement. - SMML Address Change.
